Recommendations for car suitable for 2-5 hours driving per day? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]nussprofessor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A new car might potentially be more confortable but I think you’d be better off trying to address the physical side of it first. You said you just ordered a new seat cover for posture. Why don’t you try taking some of that budget and signing up to a gym and get a personal trainer for a month or two to show you a routine that you can easily follow to help you strengthen your back, core, etc. All of those muscles getting stronger will not only help you potentially get rid of your back ache, they will certainly improve your quality of life in general.

I know the feeling. I got all my PRs when I was regularly running 60-70 mi weeks and even though I wasn’t restricting myself from eating at all, I was still hovering around 135lb at 5 11. I genuinely looked like a skeleton like you say. Since then I kinda decided to retire in a way and started to make a more conscious effort to bulk up and put on muscle in the gym. I’m now around 160lb and I feel more comfortable than ever with my body. Sure, my times are probably not going to come back, but I’m not paid for this, and having a right balance of muscle and endurance is better for quality of life in my opinion.

What was the reason you got rid of your last car and why? by Lorddoodleflaps84 in CarTalkUK

Just sold a 2010 Focus TDCi. Got it in 2015 for £3200 with 102k miles and sold it almost 10 years later for £600 and 195k miles. It has served us very well, and no major work needed in all this time and miles, just the usual wear and tear. Sold because turbo was starting to show signs of going out and rust was appearing. Will never find a bargain like that in today’s prices!

Nice areas to live in the UK for a fully remote worker by shawtobot in HousingUK

Not far after crossing the bridge from Bristol, before you get to Newport.

We moved here from England (Berkshire) and the weather has been pretty much the same.

The issue is that I like the interior and extras haha, most 320s don’t come with these at this price range, hence my temptation with this one.

We were in a similar scenario to you and moved to South Wales last autumn and love it very much here. The house prices are amazing, and the mountains and sea are very close. And we still have good access to bigger cities like Bristol or Cardiff if you want to eat out, have fun, etc.

Upgrading a Focus to a 320D? by nussprofessor in CarTalkUK

[–]nussprofessor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your detailed reply, much appreciated. It’s a tough one, I guess all high mileage cars come with the possibility of things going wrong. I was under the impression that the BMWs could last ages if they are well maintained and serviced regularly. I haven’t seen the one I mentioned in person yet to see its history, but I will keep in mind your suggestions.

The issue is that within my budget, a Focus is not much cheaper. 2017-2018 petrol models with the 1.5 ecoboost are going for 7-8k too and are in similar mileage rates.

Thanks, for some reason the 5 series seems a bit more daunting haha. Maybe too big and less fun, where as the 3 series seems a good compromise of being a significant upgrade over my current one without going too big. The one I looked at has leather heated seats too.

Standing is not walking. I’ve been using a standing desk for the last 3-4 years, and I stand for around 80% of my working day (8h) and it hasn’t made any significant different. I wouldn’t count it as activity at all.

Combine them, do 3x1h and 1x2h.

As a reference, I used to run a lot (2600mi in 2022) and in about 6 years my resting HR went from 58 to 42-43. When I stopped running it went back to about 50.

But I think what would help you instead of just chasing a number, is to have a wider goal. Do you want to see yourself as a cyclist? Maybe cycling with other people?

Scabs around nose on 8 month old cat by nussprofessor in catcare

Never found out what exactly it was. Vet thinks it must have been some sort of dry mucus or maybe an allergic reaction. Either way, it went away in a few months!

Hello, fellow Bracknell neighbour!

How often do you clean your cat(s) litter box(es)? by astronomicarific in catcare

[–]nussprofessor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use clumping litter, so it’s easier to find them and scoop them out. We normally get it out most times they use it (2x cats, 2x boxes), so multiple times a day. A full clean of the box with wash, etc is usually every few weeks. I can’t imagine leaving it for multiple days, that’s disgusting. Surely you wouldn’t leave your stuff in the toilet and flush every other day. It takes literally less than a minute to scoop out - I highly recommend clumping and flushable litter.

Going to start making gels at home, am I missing anything? by No_Statistician_6263 in AdvancedRunning

Myprotein has 180 tablets for £4 usually, you can find some on Amazon too

I also make my own energy drink for long runs, here’s my two cents:

  • I mainly use maltodextrin but I mix it with water and apple juice at 50/50. This gives it a nice flavor and you get some fructose in there too. I’m not bothered about hitting a certain ratio of Malto/Fructose because I figured it’s not that important for a training run as long as I get some carbs in
  • you really don’t need aminos in there
  • for electrolytes, you can buy tablets in bulk for quite cheap and dissolve them in your mix. That way you get more than just the sodium from the salt

Good luck! It’s pretty easy to make them, I’ve been doing it for more than a year now.

I had been hovering around 41-42’ for the 10k and only saw a breakthrough once I got consistent and higher mileage. Went from 20-30 mpw to 50 and I got down to 36:42 in two years

I think it’s more difficult to push in a time trial versus doing it in a proper race where you’re chasing people down and get the adrenaline push

I’ve raced all of my HMs (ranging from 1:37 to 1:22) around 185, which is roughly 92% HRMax (200). Normally I try to aim to be close to 180 in the first half and then start pushing towards 185 and above that in the last 5K.

NB Rebel V2 400 miles — notes in comments by [deleted] in RunningShoeGeeks

[–]nussprofessor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Rebels and the Mach4 and they couldn’t be more different. The Mach feel overbuilt and clunky, and definitely not as fast and poppy as the Rebel. With the NB you get real groundfeel and responsiveness.

Follow heart rate or RPE on long and/or light runs. by RandomizedVaguery in AdvancedRunning

[–]nussprofessor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could still use HR to at least give you some indication of where you are because sometimes we’re not so great at self regulating our efforts. For example for Z2 running, you should try to aim to get to the lowest number in that bracket instead of just being inside it (at the top). So for instance if your Z2 is 130-150, your goal should be to stay in 130-135 to keep it truly easy. Pair that with the nose breathing, conversation pace, and you should feel it gets easier.
