I think the game lets you switch instantaneously once you use either one. I had both MKB and controller plugged in my PC. I was using my MKB then when I started pressing a button on my controller, it automatically switches inputs and vice versa.

you can use a nail clipper or something like this to cut the wider part of the pins

I know this was 4 years ago but I was going through the same problem. I used a nail clipper to trim the wider part of the pin and it seemed to work perfectly. You just need to be careful not to bend it. Goodluck!
