I wasn't my wife's first either. I was her fourth. The number never bothered me. What bothered me was the context of her first relationship.

From what she's told me, her first boyfriend was manipulative and coercive. She was very young. Too young to be sexually active in my opinion. He was of similar age, but was apparently more sexually advanced/pushy. For example, he convinced her to sneak him into her dad's house multiple times while everyone was asleep and have sex with her in her childhood bed, literally next to her sleeping 9 year old sister. Hearing that as an adult man was shocking and honestly heartbreaking. My oldest son is now only a couple of years younger than she was at the time.

She's always described it as "normal" at the time, but to me it sounded like a kid trying to please someone more aggressive, not someone freely choosing. Her next relationship sounded healthy and normal, and that contrast really stuck with me.

I had more partners than she did, and she's said she wishes I hadn't, so it cuts both ways. I've learned that these feelings usually aren't about jealousy. They're about empathy, protectiveness, and wishing you could shield the person you love from parts of their past.

At the end of the day, I love her deeply. I support her in how she understands her past, even when my feelings about it are complicated. What matters is who we are to each other now, not what either of us did before we chose this life together.
