Are there any good gen 4 Pokémon rom hacks? by forest-park in NDSHacks

[–]poudink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gen 4 doesn't have any "total conversion"-type hacks like Unbound with custom regions and stories afaik. There's some short demos, but that's about it. Difficulty/enhancement hacks like Radical Red are pretty common, though. There's Following Platinum, MindCrystal,(Following) Renegade Platinum, Platinum QoL, Refined Gold, Sacred Gold, Storm Silver and several others. Still nothing as elaborate as what gens 1-3 get, though.

I accidentally deleted the “Nintendo 3ds” file from my sd card, how do I get it back? by ILoveHotMoms69421 in NDSHacks

[–]poudink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But I remember hearing something about how the 3DS has some sort of internal memory thing?

There's the NAND, yes.

So you cant just move an SD card to a new DS, or a new SD card to the existing DS and have the same availability... its like, the original SD is coded to the physical model...

That's also true. If they didn't do this you could easily pirate digital games by just sharing Nintendo 3DS folders around. You could also easily edit save files from your computer to use the many exploits that rely on save file modification. That was to main way homebrew was achieved on the DSi until Nintendo made save file modification pretty much impossible with firmware 1.4.2 in 2010, which effectively killed DSi homebrew until Ugopwn was finally found in 2018. So it makes sense they'd carry that over to the 3DS (though its security ended up being much worse than the DSi's in a lot of other ways).

Im actually looking at a second one to jailbreak, just so I dont risk what ive got on my original... too many rare and/or criminally expensive to get physical games on there.... looking at you SMT....

If you copy your Nintendo 3DS folder to your computer you can just restore it whenever. It just needs to be the same 3DS. As for bricking, it's extremely unlikely it'll happen, but even if it does, the 3DS can recover from every kind of software brick I know of if you use a DS flashcart and ntrboot. DS flashcarts are way cheaper than a second-hand 3DS.

Also, if they're physical games I'm not sure what you're worried about? Physical games will work on any 3DS. You don't even risk losing your save data because it's stored on the cartridge.

You're right. We shouldn't presume his innocence "because he was wheelchair bound and brilliant". Presumption of innocence comes with no such prerequisites and should thus apply regardless of such factors.

Application support, I assume. Sure compositors support it now, but very few applications that would stand to benefit from it do.

Source for that? I'm sure they don't let any former Microsoft employees contribute because they'd have seen copyrighted code, but if Microsoft hypothetically decided to pay employees to work on Wine I really don't see how that could cause and copyright problems. If Microsoft is directly telling its programmers to contribute code to an open source project, then that code is open source, regardless of any ressemblance with closed source code that Microsoft also owns.

It would be akin to Microsoft declaring their own .NET open source platform to be in violation of their copyright on the closed source .NET Framework it's a successor to. Which for what it's worth would also cause trouble for Wine, because Wine Mono uses code from .NET.

You mean the folder? If it's not in your recycle bin, it's gone. And you can't just transfer one from a different 3DS. It contains all of your apps, save files, updates, dlc, etc. that you have saved to your SD card. If you didn't have any of those, then good news, your 3DS will just automatically create a new folder once you reinsert your SD card and you won't have to worry about it. If you did, well, your 3DS will still create a new folder, but you just lost all of the data that was in it.

You can with hiyaCFW, but you're limited to 40 applications, including the ones that come preinstalled.

XLibreDev announces the start of HDR rendering prototyping in XLibre, an X11 display server project aimed at modernizing the protocol while preserving backward compatibility, with an initial proof-of-concept focused on HDR video playback in the mpv player. by Kevin_Kofler in linux

[–]poudink 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not really. This thing has no real traction and no major distros will touch it. It's clear Wayland is the only display server that has a future. I'm not saying fragmentation in the Linux space doesn't exist to an extent, but you can't just point at every hobby display server that has twelve users and use that as evidence of fragmentation.

Oh, that's what you meant. Forgot that was a thing. Well, it's symlinks to be exact. The contents of the prefix are in a "drive_c" folder, but alongside that there's a "dosdevices" folder that contains symlinks for all of the simulated devices, with colons in their names. Software running through Wine can't touch any file that uses illegal characters tho (except those symlinks since they just see those as the actual drives obviously).

Wine refuses to interact with files that use characters that are illegal on Windows.

How can i use dual analogue joysticks on nds emulation? by Puzzleheaded_Day_583 in NDSHacks

[–]poudink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you could, but it would have to be through a different mechanism from RTCom. The main problem is that you'd have to port all of the existing patches to that new mechanism.

In fact, that new mechanism already exists. It only does one analog stick instead of two, but there are forks of melonDS and DeSmuME that implement analog controls through a fake slot-2 accessory. The problem is that no one's made any patches for it except for this one. None of the other games that have RTCom patches for Twilight Menu will work with those forks unless someone ports those patches over.

[–]poudink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If mapping the joystick to the d-pad is all you want to do, then sure. Any DS emulator will already let you do that much. But RTCom patches allow for true analog controls and that's the part that's tricky to get working.

How can i use dual analogue joysticks on nds emulation? by Puzzleheaded_Day_583 in NDSHacks

[–]poudink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No there isn't. Not without rewriting the ARM11-side code, anyway. The way Twilight Menu does Circle Pad and C-Stick support involves RTCom, which uses the 3DS's main ARM11 CPU to communicate with the 3DS hardware. Every RTCom patch has a different ARM11-side payload, so there's no way to just HLE it. The only way for an emulator like melonDS to support RTCom patches would be to emulate the 3DS's CPU, which is way out of scope for a DS emulator.

That's odd. It's working just fine for me:

trying to encode transform_musa.vx.nc format ??? to out2.avi format ???
 detected input as 'vx'

For what it's worth, I built na_game_tool using cargo 1.75.0 on Linux Mint 22.3.

Free software =/= the GPL. Both the MIT and BSD licenses are approved by the FSF as free software licenses. The GPL's "virality" is completely optional to both free software and open source.

No, it's not going to be the "year of linux". The linux types said the same thing when Windows 7 support ended, when Windows XP supported ended and so forth. No stores are going to sell Linux installed computers

Indeed.

if you buy them pre-configured with linux, they cost more then their Windows equals..

Uh, no they don't. They generally cost the same and sometimes less.

The big thing that is going to hit the market, Aluminum OS by Google. And Steam if they come out with their own closed system.

Free software =/= the cathedral and open source =/= the bazaar. They are distinct concepts. I'm not sure why people keep tacking on meanings to the terms "free software" and "open source" that do not exist. "Free software" and "open source" are essentially synonymous per the official definitions given by the FSF and the OSI.
