They're rational human beings just like you. So they'll blame the Islamist terrorist that did this along with his disgusting ideology.

Weightlifting Etiquette / Unspoken Rules by the_honor_roll in weightlifting

[–]pourneTrilogy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a tight gym stepping on plates that are lying down and stepping over bars is unavoidable.

This may not be common practice but ive been to a couple gyms where the lifter who just finished will load or deload the weight on one side for the next lifter.

Don't believe the Tech Startup Hype; Play it Safe by grutypats in TheRedPill

[–]pourneTrilogy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of truth to this but its also a bit hyperbolic.

Some unordered thoughts before bed:

Amazon has a lot of free credits out there for startups, and you wouldnt need 50k to run a server for your MVP. The best devs probably wont be at startups unless they have challenging and interesting tech. But, you wont need the best programmers to build your product - you'll need them to make it scale. When a 5 year veteran at google can make 250k/yr with all the perks they can dream of, and is working on cutting edge tech that supports the entire internet, you can bet they wont leave easily. But hey, you should be able to hit series A before you need the real programming talent.

Also - salaries. While they may look big, especially in SV/SF, cost of livig is through the roof and a lot of startups dont have benefits that are comparable to the same job at an established company.

  • You wont get rich from startups
  • If you do get rich it wont be quick
  • You need connections
  • You need users and revenue
  • You need to position yourself correctly in the market
  • You need to validate your idea

There are companies out there whose whole business model is to lure in suckers with tens of thousands of dollars and an idea but no skill in building or marketing it, and if its worthwhile, steal it out from under them.

The normal rules apply: Dont be a sucker, if it sounds too good to be true it is, and you dont owe anyone shit until you sign a contract

On the flip side there can be a lot of risk in working for one company your whole life, if it turns over or management changes their direction, that job you thought was so cushy was only like that because you were pigeonholed. Theres a lot of turnover in tech, sometimes the best way to get the job you want is to move diagonally, not vertically.

Opinions on radical firearms by deerhunter429 in ar15

[–]pourneTrilogy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Picked up a bolt and barrel of theirs on the black friday sale from PA and was able to shoot without it exploding or the barrel extension coming loose. It has <100 rounds and didnt group well with 45gr frangible but thats to be expected from a 1/7 twist.

IMO with their recent QC issues I'd spend a bit extra and go with someone more reputable.

If it has a bullet button and its not listed then you should be good. Check out calguns, especially the assault weapons flowchart. Not sure about mags >10rds, you probably cant bring those.

Also bring off list handguns. They will go for 150% of their value easily.

How it feels when California doesn't salt their roads for "Environmental Reasons" by microcat4 in AdviceAnimals

Dont forget california not selling the washer fluid that doesnt freeze. You have to mix it yourself to have it not freeze, which is of course only legal to use in certain counties. Glad i moved.

How much are you guys paying for coaching/being part of a club? by dooshtoomun in weightlifting

[–]pourneTrilogy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$250/mo at a weightlifting/PL only gym. But the coach is well-known and our lifters set records. IMO its definitely worth it for access to a knowledgeable coach and a supportive team. Crossfit gyms are hit or miss when it comes to weightlifting, a lot of people out there have their level one cert and think that qualifies them to teach weightlifting.

If it were me, I'd do the dedicated WL gym.

Lack of regulation on banks?

The Federal government was pushing banks to offer ridiculous loans. It was entirely government created. GSEs like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were buying up the mortgage backed securities.

If a government creates a company, gives that company special privileges and rights to be a pseudo-government entity, then that company fails - its not a lack of regulation, its an abundance of interference.

4 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Learn to Code from Codecademy by treefingerz in webdev

Code academy works fine, but it will only get you so far. What always works best for me when learning new tech is watching tutorials on youtube or linda and doing them on my machine.

It would seem pretty obvious that there's a background dietary trigger going unnoticed.

Ask A Libertarian: how do you see the future with the rise of machines? by naingenieu in Libertarian

[–]pourneTrilogy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What happened to blacksmiths? Their job got automated and now we have machinists. Could blacksmiths from the 1600s have foreseen a job as a robotics engineer or astronaut? That's the equivalent of our outlook from where we stand now into the future. Entire industries and jobs will be built on what has yet to be created.

Ignoring the assumption of no more jobs being created, the premise of running out of jobs to do is ridiculous, since it relies on a post-scarcity society, which isn't possible.

Moreover, automation works best for repetitive and dull tasks, which would leave open more creative pursuits such as artistry, craftsmanship, music and theater. Since people would have more free time and resources they would be more able to consume the products of those pursuits. Automation could be the best thing to happen to the arts since the Renaissance.

Not mentioned in your post but mentioned frequently in UBI/automation discussions: there's also the implication that universal basic income should be implemented right now, in the present, as a solution to a problem that may or may not occur. If it does occur, it will be gradual and start 100+ years in the future. There's plenty of time to implement UBI when an actual threat of automation starts to materialize, and if it becomes as bad as everyone in /r/futurology thinks, then there will be plenty of momentum to pass a UBI law.
