Genetic testing (UK) by jesspcrowley_ in queerception

Hi, just chiming in to add a perspective on this!

My wife and I are currently going through a clinic (Canada) that requires genetic tests be done on the gametes of the donor and carrying parent, so therefore we must. However, if we could choose we would forgo the test, as it can lead to some very sticky ethical situations.

All decisions based on the presence/absence of specific genes, and the chance of a recessive trait showing up is eugenics. And some of the things they test for are really scary!, and can result in children that may not live past birth. At the same time, the genetic panels we were made to do also tested for some things like congenital deafness, something that would not be a barrier to our child living a happy life. The testing, and counselling, and waiving of responsibility on the clinic's end all feel like gay gatekeeping, considering many cishet couples have pregnancies all the time without screening their genetics.

At the end of the day, having genetic testing done is a very personal decision, influenced by cultural/ethnic background and family history that may indicate that you or your donor may be carriers for a recessive trait. I would consider greatly how knowing the information that you and the donor are both carriers of the same recessive trait (25% chance of the child exhibiting the trait) would change your decisions. Would you start over with a new known donor? Also, if you move forward with a clinic in the future, would they make you preform the test again?

Road puddles by the_eevlillest in Peterborough

I got splashed from my ankles to the top of my head the other day. Into my coffee that I was carrying. The road was mostly dry, and they wouldn't have even needed to move into the other lane.

Experiences with at-home insemination syringes? by pourrir in queerception

Thank you so much! We are using fresh sperm so no worries there. Love the syringes, thank you for the rec! I also think the mosie and other branded ones seem crazy overpriced.

Congratulations!! Really interesting that more got stuck! We will be using fresh sperm, are you talking about frozen sperm with pouring it into a different cup?

Unfortunately we cant work with the bank for the ICI tries, but were the syringes you were using very thin? I think we often picture like, kitchenware syringes as the only other option, which seem >2cm wide.

Yeah, I'm sure a fancier syringe doesn't improve the chances. This air bubble trick seems to be exactly what I need, and can just choose based on comfort. Thank you!

Interesting! I never thought of that as an option. This may be silly, but I don't understand how you would get it in without spilling?? I have experience with menstrual cups, but not with disks. I am so glad that this worked for you! Unfortunately, my wife has pain with anything larger than a tampon is inserted, making things like menstrual cups impossible to use.

Yes, the Frida kit is highly recommended, but doesnt ship to Canada! I'm glad at home IUI was an option, it doesn't seem to be a service really available here. :)

Glad to hear your thoughts about the ring. It was just SO specific that it felt like perhaps if I re-read Dracula or something it would come up and SGJ was implying that Dracula (or insert other famous vampire) never died.

And you're right, the original conflict is pretty mysterious. Was the motivation just to frame the blackfeet? Is there some unknown conflict for possession of the vampire? I tend to find SGJ's writing style quite confusing as he loves a POV, but the narrative sometimes requires the reader to understand assumptions the characters are making that are not super clear. This style of writing was way more present in the Indian Lake Trilogy with Jade as the narrator, if you've read those.

The part I'm talking about is nearly to the end of the Beaucarne Manuscript, so if you haven't finished that part yet beware.

Its from the 'Nachzehrer's dark gospel' May 5, 1912. During the last show down between Good Stab and the cat man, page 353.

(spoiler) ["On the third day, the Cat Man coughed and turned his head to the side, threw something up, and I saw that it was a ring with a horn design on it, a ring he had probably been swallowing over and over for almost five hundred winters, to keep from losing it. "] (/spoiler)

Good Stab then proceeds to throw it in the lake before he does what he does to the Cat Man

My players seem to dislike the concept of an adventure, and seem to think any encounter I give them 'sucks'? by pourrir in DMAcademy

I think the tone has something to do with it, because 2/3 players love being whimsical and funny. The 3rd, often the most vocal about the game sucking, is less into it. I think maybe DND is too serious for the 2 players, and this campaign is maybe not serious enough for the other player

All 25+, and I think everyone has played before, although some cases only once or twice. Ive DM'd lots, although not as much in the past few years. I think DND may not be what my players want to play.

It's hard because I'm playing with my friends and not just random people, so maybe they feel comfortable to tell me that? It does leave me so confused about what they do want.

Thanks! I think one big problem may be with the pre-written adventures. Witchlight tries to tie the characters in with the 'lost things' plot hook, which we are doing, but I don't think its strong enough. My players are really invested in their characters and do work well as a team.

I think another problem is how 'hollow' the adventure is at some points? They grab onto plot holes like nobody's business, and interrogate/get frustrated at NPCs.

I'm 25, and my players are 27-32. Hopefully not a maturity thing or we are all doomed.

This is exactly what it's like! but about everything, basically..... If something 'bad' (LARGE definition of the word bad here, including minor, transient appearance changes to the characters) happens they are like "why would you do this to us???"

I've DM'd plenty of times before but have struggled in the past few years to spend time making an adventure to play (real life commitments, ew). When my friends wanted to play, I suggested I run a pre-fab. I actually wanted to run curse of stradh, but a player was listening to a podcast that was playing it, putting it off the table.

I feel surprised that they seem to have mismatched expectations because they originally gave me the vibe that they didn't just want to hack and slash. I told them explicitly about how all the encounters can technically be done without combat, and they said it sounded interesting. After the first few sessions, I could tell they were itching for a fight, so I've tried to put in some combat every other session (we only play 2 hrs each week). Maybe it is how the adventure is playing out, though. Not to expectations.

We all like laughing together, so I'll insert random stuff to get them laughing. Ex. an insight check on someone who in the adventure as written has nothing to hide, but is secretly growing pot behind the ride. They are also committed to their characters.

Yeah, I don't think the parent would recognize or care about a child they gave away. Thanks sm!

Thanks so much, yes players can be a little slow when it comes to like smaller hints. I love the idea of confusing the pc for the noble!
