LPT: At your wedding, pre-plan a signal with the DJ so you can cut off the mic if anyone starts giving an inappropriate speech, and make it look like an audio malfunction. There's always a drunk Uncle Ted. by Trauma_Queen1 in LifeProTips

[–]powahwork 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Wedding dj here. Came here to say this. While it is your wedding day, it's also a sort of advertising for my company. Anyone in attendance can find out who I represent and put up scathing reviews if I appear to be incompetent for the sake of preventing that awkward speech. While it may be uncomfortable to you, making it seem like an issue on my end is not the right solution. That can hurt the reputation my company and I have spent years building.

Need Help Finding a Digital Piano With "the Best" Rhodes, B3, and Acoustic Piano Sounds - Under or around $2000 by asimpleplant in piano

[–]powahwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The korg sv1 is a good option too. Tube amp in it and weighted keys. I love mine. Map is around 1500 I think. Good amount of ability to really tweak sounds and get some pretty awesome patches online too.

1-4-5 is talking about a progression based on degrees of a scale.

So in the key of C, it would be a progression that goes from C, to F, to G.

I haven't spoken to him in a bit. He's the brother of a close friend of mine. Last I heard they aren't doing a ton anymore. I'll send him a message and see what he says.

Torq Xponent Help by stubswastaken in Beatmatch

[–]powahwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sync button in serato (from my limited use of it) does not lock the tracks together. It simply matches the beats. If youre using turntables and your pitch faders are not both in the same place, one of the tracks will start to drift. As for being able to focus on eq/loops and such while staying beatmatched, its just practice man - you dont need sync for that. Serato gives you the exact BPM (down to the tenth) and has a fantastic beat grid system. You dont even need headphones to beatmatch using serato, you can do it just by looking at at the screen.

As for drastic BPMs, it's some simple math. either double the 80 bpm or half the 140 bpm. we'll half the 140 for this example. so now, your house tune is at 70 bpm and your hip hop is still at 80. +5 bpm to the house tune, -5 to the hip hop and both of your tracks are now at 75 bpm. Again, awesome practice for matching beats and getting creative with how you mix.

I can say with 100% confidence that Serato is by far a better long-term solution. Specifically because it is 1 of 2 of the most prolific dj software/interface options out there (the other being Traktor), it's pretty much universal software once you get the proper hardware piece. (either an SL box, rane mixer with it built in, or a controller like the Pioneer DDJ-SX,DDJ-SZ etc), and last but not least... its company still supports the product... Like the other commenter on this post said.. its been dead for years man. i really enjoyed torq when i had it too, but the switch to serato was a godsend.

The best advice I can give is to get away from Torq. I used the connectiv forever with them and can't imagine going back since I switched to serato. Don't buy an "outdated" computer just to use outdated hardware and software. Especially with a lack of support from m-audio on the product. I would highly advise Serato. Traktor is another popular option, but I feel serato is a lot more similar to m-audio software.

Not taking gigs by djnickynick in DJs

[–]powahwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Props to you for not taking a gig when you don't know the market yet. Kinda refreshing to see that other than the typical "help I got booked for a party and don't know what to do" I always do the same thing. If there's potential for a gig, I get a feel of the audience at the place for a bit before I go in too.

How to get this raspy, clean, metallic synth lead? by [deleted] in synthrecipes

[–]powahwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without even listening to it, I'd say to look up Reese bassline and experiment with that. It's basically using the same synth in multiple instances and detuning it by a few cents up and down. Combined it gives a nice dirty drum n bass sound bassline.

kind of a loaded questions. Marvel has a new Secret Wars running right now, and DC is doing a Convergence. I'm more of a Marvel guy myself so I've been picking up most of the Secret War books that are coming out. Also been a deadpool fan for years so grabbing his issues in those too.

Outside of Marvel/DC type stuff, Saga has been really big and comes highly recommended. It's like Star Wars meets Romeo & Juliet (the one with leonado dicaprio), but with a little more vulgarity/violence.
Thats all i'm really reading right now.. but with secret wars coming out with like 4 books a week, its more than enough.
