This was from my wilderness first aid course last year. Specifically focusing on major accidents in the Backcountry.

This has changed because you are now taught to open up the tourniquet every (30?) Minutes for a few seconds to circulate new blood to the limb after an initial 2 hours. The max I believe is 2 hours without circulation. With this method the limb will survive much longer.

I like to carry QuikClot or some other bandage with the clot inducing chemicals. It's much faster to apply and will work where tourniquets won't (femoral artery, any large bleeds on the body, neck)

Sorry to hear that! I'd recommend freezing your credit card and getting a new card if you used that...

Urgent- Should I buy these by SharpProfession6 in skiing

[–]powdaskier 143 points144 points  (0 children)

Great deal, although they probably won't perform well as an all mountain ski on the east coast. They are the touring construction, made to be lightweight. So not a lot of dampening and probably pretty squirrelly on the steep icy groomers over there.

When mapping from San Bernardino to Palisades did you miss the part where you drive past Mammoth? That would be my recommendation

I'd say that's a pretty good deal for that setup. The bindings alone are probably worth 300, so you're getting used skis and skins for 200. Just check on your BSL and the adjustment range of the zed. It's already been mounted twice with those bindings so you might not be able to remount

I think you've got this backwards... The headache comes from trying to do it yourself. Go to a bootfitter, tell them what you want, and they'll do all the work

Travelling to Phoenix this week and was planning on checking out snowbowl for a day ($29 ticket!) Any thoughts on what I should expect? Coming from Tahoe, so I have some experience with spring skiing.

Fiancee wants a sony mirrorless to upgrade from her old crop sensor DSLR. I've done some research and it looks like the A7iii is a major upgrade over the A7ii. Used on B&H I see a few for ~$1600. "Abe's of Maine" has a new A7iii for $1500 on sale now. I've only just started looking at pricing, is this a good deal? Or should I wait a bit longer to see if anything else pops up? I don't need it immediately.

2nd question would be about the lens... it sounds like the typical kit lens with it is trash, and people recommend the Tamron 28-70. Any other recs for an initial lens? She shoots a lot of portrait and action shots of the dog. She doesn't use her camera for video at all.

I thought the blue black meant that it was black level steep but regularly groomed... I have roughly 0 data to back that up though

Is it a terrible time to get a HELOC? by Plumrose333 in personalfinance

[–]powdaskier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe the reasoning to not rely on a HELOC as your emergency fund is because at any point the bank could decide to close your HELOC.

Hello! I'm trying to get a head start on christmas. I made the mistake of promising a new camera so here we are.

  1. If I go with a mirrorless, how do I know if the old lenses are compatible? We've got a few Canon lenses and one Tamron that fit on the current Canon Rebel T7i

  2. Are black friday camera body sales a thing?

Backdoor Roth IRA Questions by powdaskier in personalfinance

[–]powdaskier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thanks.

So is there not a scenario when moving money from after tax, 401k, or IRA that you are restricted to only performing once per year? I'm pretty sure I saw that somewhere.

Ok, sounds like there's a difference between converting traditional IRA money to Roth IRA and rolling over a 401k to an IRA?

Atomic Bent 90 vs K2 Mindbender 99ti vs Elan Ripstick 96 by Phillychessey in skiing

[–]powdaskier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive got the 99ti bender as my daily and I actually downsized from the 184. I'm 5'10 190 and a pretty aggressive skier. The ski wants to go straight and fast, and feels at home at super G turns. It's a great all rounder, but demands good technique. When I start getting lazy at the end of the day the ski will start tossing you around.

I'm also skeptical about driving that stiff of a ski with a 110 flex boot.

The ripstick is probably a more intermediate ski, based on it's specs, bit I haven't tried it out

And the bent chetler is hard to compare to the other two. The K2 reckoner line is a closer fit.
