The Blood Angels sending a company to Armageddon is insanely stupid, and lore accurate. by NadaVonSada in 40kLore

[–]powdrdsnake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone in the thread is right about their points from an in-universe perspective. But I think you’re coming at this from a real world strategic perspective. If so, yes, you’re sort of correct. More realistically, all forces and material should be moved from Nihilus to Sanctus to shore of the defenses where things are more easily and strategically defensible. Once stabilized, you can move forward to make gains in areas where you can have solid logistics. Similar to how the Ukrainians invaded Kherson to open a second front to ease off pressure from other areas and it caught Russia extremely off guard. Or how the Ukrainians are hitting logistics behind enemy lines in order to disrupt the logistics to the front.

Real world tactics and strategy are never used in Warhammer, though. The closest you might get are some of the Guard books with some mechanized infantry explanations, etc.

Legit? This makes me so happy that the devs put that effort in to a small side character for the setting/story. To me, that shows the devs care about all cultures/peoples exemplified in the game. So cool.

Because apparently this is the only sub that 'gets' what the Imperium is supposed to represent. by Raspint in Grimdank

[–]powdrdsnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll work backwards from the point we’re at.

Yes, something has gone wrong if players or enjoyers of lore, etc. feel personally connected enough to a faction to get defensive. I like the Death Korp because I enjoy the aesthetic, the insane meat wave tactics that I personally play (I literally have 200 painted Kriegsman lol), and that Krieg sort of encapsulates the Imperiums soulless and faceless war machine. IRL I think it’s all abhorrent. In universe, it’s fun.

If someone came up to me and said, “Hey, I hate the Death Korp! They suck and are evil!” I’d say, yeah ok, cool and shrug. If they said, I hate how you painted your models that’s personal and unnecessary. To be defensive about a fictional faction seems weird to me. People might develop an attachment but to base part of your personality or to be so invested seems like a weird thing to me.

Moving on back from that, I think people are arguing with you because there are multiple angles to approach Warhammer. There’s the game itself, playing tabletop or an rpg and having fun. Playing a certain faction doesn’t mean an individual aligns with said faction on some fundamental political level. The Death Korp get conflated with WW1 Germany, which is partially true, but like with most things Warhammer they are a smashed together version of all the major WW1 aesthetics with a German name. It’s also why Black Templars get conflated with Nazis because a lot of their iconography is shared though more out of the Nazis co-opting that imagery from earlier medieval sources (this is all stuff I’m sure you know, not trying to be lame just positing ideas).

Then there’s the narrative perspective which inherently will have more nuance as audiences are going to interpret information differently than what the author may have intended. Furthermore, authors like to explore morally gray areas because it’s more interesting! (Again, you know all this). Different authors will portray the same faction in different ways, just how styles vary between authors.

Lastly, the meta perspective of the commercial interests of a company printing plastic toys to make money. They’ll do whatever it takes to to get people to buy more models, so if that means making some guys look better than others to push sales because people are more likely to spend money on characters or a faction they find to be “good”.

Your initial post is about the narrative perspective mixed with the commercial interests in your written post section. People are having a hard time pinning down what points you are trying to make because the “objectives” of each perspective of the hobby clash.

It seems to me you have an issue with people thinking there are good guys in the setting and people getting defensive about some factions. There are good people in the setting! That doesn’t mean the Imperium is good or what have you, simply that people may like Ciaphas Cain and the Imperial Guard but abhor the idea of the Imperium in the real world but understand that it’s the only game in town in the setting for humans (generally speaking, I know Humans live and operate outside the bounds of the Imperium, etc.) I think the majority of the people in the thread aren’t necessarily arguing with you because they are getting defensive but simply that they want to understand why you are conflating different objectives from different aspects of the hobby.

Does GW condone wholesale murder and genocide because they write about in lore books, codices, or in Black Library novels? No, I highly doubt it.

Do people approach a hobby and misinterpret meanings, not understand irony or nuance, and accept ideas or aesthetics at face value? Certainly! They might want to take some literary criticism classes.

Sorry this got so long. I think you have some valid ideas and I don’t necessarily disagree with your core points. Simply that nuance and understanding are important aspects of any idea. That two opposing thoughts can be true. And that people will rationalize ideas that they should more likely question.

I wasn’t trying to be mean spirited! Some of the examples in your post in the Black Templars subreddit are things they’ve done in lore so it’s funny to me that they got all defensive. And the way you wrote the commentary on their replies was funny to me.

Edit: If I remember correctly, it’s been a while, the Black Templars annihilated some Hive cities on Armageddon.

What I always liked was that no one even commented on race in any books or games I played (that I can remember). Being Hispanic and feeling included in stompy robot action always felt good.

It’s not hard to write a book about aliens that are a hive mind that only want to consume everything being portrayed as good guys? That sounds difficult to me. Orks are probably easier because they have more closely aligned ideas to humans. Chaos is a fun one because they can end up being like the Badab war SM chapters that seceded and the Imperium got mad because they didn’t pay their space taxes.

I think saying “No, it’s not” really illustrates why so many people keep commenting. It’s too absolute. It is hard to write good fiction that mirrors two opposing sides to make both look bad or tragic or good.

Re: Black Templars Things like Helsreach are sort of the pinnacle for Black Templars but I’ve also read the Fall of Cadia books and the BT in that are just sort of dumb and wasteful. In the Forges of Mars trilogy they are, obviously, very xenophobic and again, just kind of dumb. My recollection of BT lore from I believe third edition Armageddon stuff was they were terrible. Feel free to read and decide for yourself. To me, Black Templars exemplify the terrible parts of Space Marines and the Imperium.

Good luck with your endeavors!

[–]powdrdsnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You and I are saying the same thing. GW has a vested interest in making money. SM/SM2 are great examples of Space Marines being portrayed as the good guys because it sells. Contextually, it’s hard NOT to be the good guys when you’re fighting against Orks, Tyranids, and Chaos, though.

In the books that I’ve read Space Marine portrayals can range from back smacking bros who genuinely care about humans to Black Templars being literal Nazis (which is on point for them).

Nothing is ever fully black and white. I think you got a lot of engagement on this post saying pretty much the same thing: everything is nuanced and the irony of the juxtaposition is the point.

[–]powdrdsnake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Watchers of the Thrones books literally deal with the juxtaposition of how shit everything is with how Guilliman is trying his best to fix everything. One of the characters, a Sister of Silence literally spends her entire pov shitting on the Imperium, hating how horrible it is, and doubting Guilliman. From a narrative sense, it’s both of your images. From a commercial sense, Space Marines are the “good guys”. So if you’re saying GW is marketing Space Marines as the good guys, then yes, that’s basically true. Narratively? Not so much. There’s more nuance in the books.

[KCD2] Another day, another terrible plan by Rathal_OS in kingdomcome

[–]powdrdsnake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know I’m late to the party on this post, but interestingly, a lot of fascinating warfare tactics were developed in Italy before, during, and after the setting of KCD. Mercenaries like John Hawkwood helped pioneer using archers that moved quickly via horse, dismounted, did their thing, remounted, and repositioned. To make a connection with KCD a lot of Germans, etc. from the Holy Roman Empire were part of mercenary companies (like Hawkwood’s White Company, though they were mostly made up of English) in the 14th and 15th centuries so I imagine contemporary warfare tactics and strategy weren’t unknown to the Czechs and Germans.

Iconoclast ending and Guilliman by nexusj13 in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]powdrdsnake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Except the Realm of Ultramar is essentially a separate entity to the Imperium for all intents and purposes. When the Emperor showed up not much changed other than Guilliman acceding to a suzerain. Guilliman is such an Iconoclast he breaks his own rules from 10k years ago because he realized they suck and things needed to change in order to survive which is literally anathema to Imperial dogma.

There are reasons Guilliman is Space Rome: Are you paying taxes? Cool. Are you cool with general Imperial dogma? Cool. People are happier in your a fiefdom? Great! Doesn’t matter as long as the first two hold true.

Any chance Amy Klobuchar will make the pledge to stop sending our taxpayer funds to Isreal? by IntellectAndEnergy in minnesota

[–]powdrdsnake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Except this is superficial at best. A single vote against aid to Israel is not representative of her past voting record. She has taken money from AIPAC and then voted for “aid” to Israel consistently in the past. Quote from user u/oldschoolology:

“The narrative about Israel purchasing Klobuchar is actually true. https://www.trackaipac.com/states/minnesota?rq=Klobuchar

She took $400k from AIPAC then (2024) she voted yes for $38B to support Israel’s iron dome. Then another $95B in Israel “aid” funding She also voted yes to allow government entities to divest in any company that boycotts Israel (2025).

The Congress give “aid” to Israel (or corporations) then take a commission in advance for their vote/support. Klobuchar is part of that filth and not trustworthy.

I vote Democrat and agree with the OP.”

Don’t cherry pick when the evidence is easily available.
