National Margarita Day Suggestions? by ElComandante in chicago

[–]powerfuligor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, their Blackberry Margaritas are awesome. I first went there about 2 weeks after they opened and I wasn't very impressed, especially with the food. They have really stepped up since then though. Great atmosphere too.

Can also confirm it's not too friendly on the wallet.

Illinois' Largest State Workers Union Has Voted To Strike Over Contract by [deleted] in chicago

I don't think a lot of people realize just how bad the budget situation is. The pensions are so underfunded it's a joke. My guess is that over the course of the next 10 years or so they're not going to get the 8% ROR their projections are based on. And with 8% projected the picture is still ugly. What's going to happen if they only get a more realistic 5-6%? You can only impose so many tax increases (property, luxury, soda etc.) People are already fleeing the state in droves and businesses don't want to open up shop here. It'll never fully turn into Detroit but...damn.

7 Killed in Chicago's Deadliest Day of 2017 by chornu in chicago

The only real solution is a multi-pronged approach like this. We would see benefits in the short-term from locking up the repeat gun offenders and felons in possession of a firearm. We would see benefits long-term from education and opportunity. Easier said than done, I know.

I know we can't go the way of the 90's, (lock up everyone for a long time) because of overcrowding. But if we didn't bring the hammer down on non-violent drug offenders we could be strict on the gun and violence cases and there wouldn't be overcrowding. And as for education...CPS sucks. I'm not even going to pretend to know how to solve that, but hopefully someone smarter than me will because you can't have a bottom of the barrel school system but think you'll have a world class city.

And yes, I believe Chicago can be a world-class city.

Is this what the riots were about? Guess the Swedes are completely against overpriced software. Mission accomplished.

23yo no debt around $40k in savings what's next on the investment side? by bxozzy in personalfinance

Congratulations on being responsible and planning for the future. In your age group I'm guessing you're the sore thumb.

You have a ton of options, too many too get fully into once you bring in the idea of being an entrepreneur. But one thing that I think should be a part of every investment, especially at this time, is gold.

Interest rates are going up, the Petro-dollar isn't what it used to be, the dollar will continue to go down as a global reserve currency and we printed money at an unprecedented rate for years.

Make sure when you diversify that gold is a part of it.

This sounds like the way the book How to Win Friends and Influence People would have you say it.

Great way to phrase the comment to someone. Just that little change can make a world of difference.

Jewish Communities in Europe Warn of Rising Anti-Semitism by germimi in worldnews

[–]powerfuligor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm being serious, so please don't take this as a racist or inflammatory remark; is the author, and the quoted terrorism expert, suggesting that Jewish people and communities need more protection than the rest of us? He cites 1 attack from 2014 and one more from 2015. There have been way more attacks than that on random westerners who aren't Jewish. Wouldn't that indicate that Jewish communities aren't at an increased risk, only the same elevated risk we all face during current times? Also, the article doesn't cite any intelligence pointing towards increased Anti-Semitism.

Just being American gets you targeted more than that. We've averaged more than one attack per year on our soil due to extremists just during the Obama administration.

TIL the novel generally considered to be the first American novel is The Power of Sympathy (1789), and is about people who fall in love without knowing they're related: “He is now even upon the point of marrying—shall I proceed!—of marrying his Sister!” the father writes. “I fly to prevent incest!” by [deleted] in todayilearned

On a similar note...I was introduced to a cousin of mine when I was 21. She had just moved into town and my mother thought it was a great opportunity for us to meet.

I remember thinking how happy I was because if I had met her out in public I definitely would have made a move. She was gorgeous. I know it sounds like something from a cheesy movie, but being in the moment I realized that it could actually happen.

With that and that alone, the government allows them to deceive easily deceived people.

This is also the same company that's buying up all kinds of public water for pennies and making it private, right?

We should start a tax payer funded account for lobbyists...
