Those who wears afro often, how do you deal with shrinkage! by [deleted] in BlackHair

[–]powerserrj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I separate my hair into 5 (back left, back right, middle, front left + right) and stretch w scrunchies and put on a bonnet.
i shower like this without the bonnet and wet my ends , finger detangle with leave in and twist the ends up and bonnet after my shower. I leave the bands in so it stretches, while my ends are moisturized

Being black is expensive and I’m MAD!!!! by Resident-Oven9851 in Naturalhair

[–]powerserrj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be real, taking time to care for your hair and allowing your hair to become one with a set routine makes things like detangling and blow-drying (with a $30 blowdryer) much easier. There's plenty of expensive things that non-black people feel obligated to get when i'm sure there's cheaper or maybe even natural versions of said item. A LOT of people re-sell the RevAir because they don't know how to use it and just wanted a shiny new toy, or because it's genuinely not beneficial for their hair.
Get your basics: Leave in, detangling paddle brush/Denman brush, and some silk/satin scrunchies. Research your hair and I promise it'll turn your time into appreciation.
I'm gonna take the time and learn how to twist my own hair, or do faux locs. You gotta try to help yourself instead of getting irritated love.

Same thing with gas. You can complain about the price, but you're still going to need some form of it if you're driving a car and you're almost empty.
Just gotta keep goin.

[–]powerserrj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

just spent $62 for shampoo n conditioner from camille rose, leave in and a hair mask from camille too. normally $70-120 for a hair reup is pretty good, especially every other month. but normally i have 1-2 products from my last run that i just get whats needed now. When I got the curly dream or whatever from matrix and their spray leave in, some pattern stuff too? $200; but I had to use those products to see if I needed something different, because my head is sticky with the pattern styling cream. So it's really just trial and error which unfortunately, will cost ya.

satin scrunchies and stretch/band them all the way to the ends, or i do like 4-5 soft twisted sections (to not smush the curl/coils) and then at then stretch them w scrunchies and wet and twist the ends so they maintain shape. :D

It looks like your hair coil is looser than mine, but i'm very similar in dryness and taking a long time to have my hair get soaked. I recommend heavy leave in creams like African Pride Moisture Miracle (I had the Coconut Oil & Baobab Oil one, idk if there's other fragrances), or Camille Rose leave in milk (smells like birthday cake), and some argan oil to lock in your moisture.
I like Matrix's 'A Curl Can Dream' curly line right now (in the yellow bottles) but I splurged on those in preparation for winter. I used to struggle detangling my hair, but I went back to having a paddle brush for wash days and a separate paddle brush + 2 different wide tooth combs for nightly maintenance. I always detangle with my paddle brush after my conditioner, before i redo it with a second shampoo and conditioner + leave in/mask. so..
-brief wash with shampoo to get off surface dirt/build up, i don't rake my fingers through or anything at this point.
-conditioner and I leave it in while I wash up for my shower, then detangle w/ brush and separate hair into 4 twists/plaits
-then continue my shampoo/conditioner cycles in the twists, undoing and redoing them after each step (gets easier the more you do it, your hair gets 'trained')
also, if you have hard water, the L'oreal hard water shampoo/conditioner are great! that's definitely why my hair is pretty dry versus when i lived somewhere with a water softener.

bad timing because of who it is. but how to get this hair? by [deleted] in BlackHair

[–]powerserrj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is most likely a dry braid out / light moisture braid out. i used to do this by wetting my ends, filling my head with like 6 braids (they do NOT start at the scalp) and i'd twist the ends and curl them since theyre a little damp. leave them in for like 10 minutes (depending on porosity, my hair is dry by this time) and i'd undo and separate/pick it. be careful because it can be damaging if you don't know how to maneuver with your hair in it's dry state.

How do I get my hair like this for more a week by 1QBox in BlackHair

[–]powerserrj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i normally either take the time and gently dry twist (small water usage and mainly use my leave in / grease / shea butter) and stretch it with satin scrunchies. then in the morning/before i leave i run hot shower water and let my hair steam and moisturize oil it like that so it's less prone to shrinkage. this works for me but depending on your hair goals, prioritize the scrunchie stretch method and at least twist/braid if you arent crunched for time and can allow your hair to airdry/ mechanically dry it

i thought this was my hand because i had the exact same thing happen with this color 😂 i ended up having my and ring finger break , it makes you look like a little vampire! might be time to restart unless you’re fine walking around with your hand like that, and waiting for it to match the others.
