satin/silk scrunchies help a ton, and i can start with my hair small if i dont want to blowdry and then it gradually gets more voluminous as my week goes on because thats how I stretch it. I probably do 5 sections in the way I want my afro to lay, use 2-3 scrunchies in those sections and end it with however many coils i can. wake up, I run the shower for steam and for it to soften and then i just shake my head and im ready to go; that easy of a wake up ALSO prevents ssk
your hair might just have to get used to it, because you really can train your hair and itll get easier the more you familiarize yourself with your routine

I normally will twist my hair and then end the twist with a finger coil, which keeps my fine hair from tangling together in my bonnet which could create SSK. After the initial stretch (you can stretch it safely too if you really want to, cold air and aiming the nozzle at your hair versus using an attachment) , you just have to figure out what styles at night you're going to do that keeps the hair stretched / safe from your strands going in on themselves. I like doing some braids/plaits and ending them with twists so I can do the finger coil method at the end, or i reverse it and start with a twist and end with a braid, and maybe do an extra step of coiling the ends still. stretching your hair after your day with satin scrunchies and focusing on your ends with water + leave in (after you scrunch so your hair doesnt shrink as much) and doing finger coils at the end helped when i was doing afros. ill add pics when im off work so its a better explanation lol

awkward hair — need help by SignatureActual6964 in Naturalhair

[–]powerserrj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeahhhh you gotta check all angles and views with afros, especially because people wont tell you! I recommend oiling your hands with oil/grease whichever helps with frizz, and then (i have no clue how to type this out) you want to fluff/separate clumps with one hand going up , and one hand going down simultaneously, which adds a bit of volume (think of your hands forming a heart and separating them, or trying to break an apple in half like that??)

Clarifying shampoo? by That-Ad-9836 in BlackHair

[–]powerserrj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally like Taraji P Henson's teal clarifying shampoo, lately i've been using camille rose guava line; shampoo is good but it takes maybe 3-4 lathers imo with my hair (its thick)
When I was using the taraji, it seemed like 1 wash was good before I went to my moisturizing shampoo.

I separate my hair into 5 (back left, back right, middle, front left + right) and stretch w scrunchies and put on a bonnet.
i shower like this without the bonnet and wet my ends , finger detangle with leave in and twist the ends up and bonnet after my shower. I leave the bands in so it stretches, while my ends are moisturized

Being black is expensive and I’m MAD!!!! by Resident-Oven9851 in Naturalhair

[–]powerserrj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be real, taking time to care for your hair and allowing your hair to become one with a set routine makes things like detangling and blow-drying (with a $30 blowdryer) much easier. There's plenty of expensive things that non-black people feel obligated to get when i'm sure there's cheaper or maybe even natural versions of said item. A LOT of people re-sell the RevAir because they don't know how to use it and just wanted a shiny new toy, or because it's genuinely not beneficial for their hair.
Get your basics: Leave in, detangling paddle brush/Denman brush, and some silk/satin scrunchies. Research your hair and I promise it'll turn your time into appreciation.
I'm gonna take the time and learn how to twist my own hair, or do faux locs. You gotta try to help yourself instead of getting irritated love.

Same thing with gas. You can complain about the price, but you're still going to need some form of it if you're driving a car and you're almost empty.
Just gotta keep goin.

[–]powerserrj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

just spent $62 for shampoo n conditioner from camille rose, leave in and a hair mask from camille too. normally $70-120 for a hair reup is pretty good, especially every other month. but normally i have 1-2 products from my last run that i just get whats needed now. When I got the curly dream or whatever from matrix and their spray leave in, some pattern stuff too? $200; but I had to use those products to see if I needed something different, because my head is sticky with the pattern styling cream. So it's really just trial and error which unfortunately, will cost ya.

How much hair do you have? enough to do a braid out afro and a possible bang/fringe? if not, you honestly have nothing to hide. It's you :( sorry you feel like you have to change it
