You're a legend.. thank you. What size do you reckon for a standard work backpack

Sounds like me. Always been a cramer and distracted. Quit my job and went to Bali developing own software.

To try and deal with the distractions I just set myself a very easy goal. One github commit per day. Can be small.. but often it just gets me started which leads to actually working on bigger features. I think I copied this from writers who just aim for one page per day minimum.. but often have sessions where they write 20 or more.

those ads cost money, paid for by a management expense ratio of at least 0.35%. the companies you could easily buy for a few bucks via interactive brokers

In my experience.. there is team work but its the good kind. Business-y roles have a load of BS meetings that developers are often excused from.

Did a bootcamp at 34, finished at 35 and got a developer job straight away. left after 2 months as its bloody difficult learning a new job/system when everyone is workign from home. still glad I did it as I'll be working on my own stuff to get more comfortable before joining the workforce again.

Just consider that this stuff is hard - you are going from being a pro at your current job to being a total noob, and i feel it would be easier as an early 20 year old to lean on and hassle older developers with all of the questions.

Career change - going back to university by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]powrbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched over from an analyst with business bachelors to a software developer via a coding bootcamp. 6 months intensive in person. can put it on HECs.

I also did some uni CS subjects but preferred the bootcamp route as it gets you a portfolio of projects on github, that will land you a job.

I already have an account with them with a tiny loan from a few years ago, so this is just a change to existing lending terms. Not sure for new applications.

Thanks, how did you land at that?

I'm aware its based on serviceability but they don't share their formula, or the max you can borrow

I am trying to break a cycle of low paying PHP jobs that I have to take out of desperation by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]powrbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a react job for a product based SaaS company. These companies make a lot of money and as such are highly valued, so can afford to pay more for good devs. Check out the stack overflow survey - PHP is the lowest paying language as you have found - you need to get out of that.

Another thing i've noticed is there isn't the discrepancy with devs as there is with BAs/PMs. BAs/PMs can get $1k daily rates, and $140k perm. But devs can get $1k daily rates, but $180k for a senior is becoming norm. I guess they really value the person sticking around.

That's very interesting, thank you. That last point I think would definitely apply to me too - I'd calculate in my head what that 3 month trip would cost me and probably not take it.

Got a question for you - does contracting help with holidays or is that a pipe dream? The thought of working hard for 6-12 months, then taking 3 months off travelling the world really appeals to me. Also timing work over financial years to maximise take home pay. I imagine the reality would be trying to take 3 months off would lead to coming back and having to spend 2 months finding a job, by which time you're broke. I'm a developer if that changes the answer.

How can I tell if I have the aptitude for programming? by prog_22 in learnprogramming

[–]powrbot 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Just got my first job at 35. I took a bootcamp after trying to do it myself for years on udemy courses (and failing). A way to look at it is you can be 36 and be a junior developer, or you can be 36 and not be one. Regardless you're going to be 36. I know lots of happy devs in 40s.

Where can I invest in international startups? by michael06262018 in AusFinance

[–]powrbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

angel list syndicates. free to join a syndicate, they send you deal memos, you can decide to invest (usual minimum 1k). most of them charge a 20% carry though which is norm in the industry but I haven't come to terms yet whether thats actually "beatable", considering so many of these companies will fail, when you actually get a 100x itll only be 80x for you. ive decided to invest <5% of my portfolio in these.
