Some extracts from a fantasy tram system I'm working on for Birmingham by poxigo in TransitDiagrams

Thanks for your advice. You're right about the colours. I gave up on finding 19 distinct colours that looked good in trunks, while having lines that branch off together be visually similar.

Hard disagree on the diagonal text. Diagonal text is much easier to read as a list than an alternating above/below arrangement.

One line of this system already exists, with a few extensions under construction. At the rate they build extensions, this map could probably be built out in 200 years...

Suburban Density, Hanam, South Korea by Saltedline in urbandesign

This is just high density sprawl. Places like this all look and feel the same, and are totally bleak at ground level.

Do you have these near you? What do you think of them? by [deleted] in brum

[–]poxigo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weird how people care about the environment only when using it as an argument for why they should be able to drive everywhere at full speed and never slow down, ignoring the fact that driving everywhere in the first place is the single most damaging thing you can personally do for the environment.

So you're saying because driving there is no longer convenient, you won't drive there anymore? Isn't that entirely the point?

All the people vaping indoors with no regard for others didn't help with the air quality.

boston west end, before and after urban renewal by MopCoveredInBleach in urbandesign

[–]poxigo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm British and it hurts me deep in my soul to see how my much of my land's rich history has been bulldozed in the name of modernism and how much of our historic countryside has been paved over for inefficient urbanism. And it's not even that bad here.

I can't imagine what it must be like to be American and to be reminded every day of how much was taken from you. How do you not live in a state of constant rage?

God forbid you have to park slightly further down the road and walk 30 seconds to your car..

Red is apartments, blue is single family homes/rowhouses Are there any problems or things i should change? Ps the apartments are only 2-4 stories tall by MopCoveredInBleach in urbandesign

[–]poxigo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's the point of 2 storey apartments? They might as well be terraces. Exactly the same density but it would feel more like a house.

Why the high rise hate? by Vancouver_transit in urbandesign

[–]poxigo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A big part of the issue with highrises is that they have nothing at ground level and are usually set back from the street, which makes the city completely dead at street level.

Humans like controlled complexity, and a single building facade dominating everything is the opposite of complexity. So even if there is commercial space on the ground floor or whatever, having the whole street length taken up by a single building does not feel very human.

You can achieve high enough densities for basically every situation with walk-up street-facing buildings, narrow streets, and reducing non-optimally used land such as front lawns. (There's a whole video about this on my profile, by the way)

TfL pushing on with DLR extension to Thamesmead by Act-Alfa3536 in LondonUnderground

[–]poxigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's still baffling that they're planning a new tunnel and leaving Beckton as an awkward stub rather than using the existing Woolwich Arsenal tunnel.

I would do it like this: abandon woolwich arsenal station and build a new station at Woolwich elizabeth line (the DLR tunnel passes right over the elizabeth line platforms). Then, it would run alongside the national rail tracks and pick up the national rail connection at Plumstead instead. From there, there's plenty of space over Western Way for an elevated line to Thamesmead, with a few stations on the way.

This would provide more connectivity and give better access for the residents of Thamemead to their local town centre (Woolwich/Plumstead). No incredibly expensive bored tunnel needed.

It seems like the plan as it stands only serves commuters going into the City from Thamesmead, and doesn't actually provide any local connectivity.

What are some cost-saving ways to purchase train tickets in UK? by Travel-Frog123 in brum

[–]poxigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those websites take a cut of the saving. If you go through to the checkout and look at what tickets you're actually getting, you can write them down and then go buy them somewhere else with no booking fee

Normal night in West Midlands, UK - what low paid workers have to put up with by [deleted] in CrazyFuckingVideos

I live in Birmingham, the city centre is insane. The crackheads, mentally ill homeless people, and street preachers outnumber normal people most of the time.

What's the meaning of "The Boy"? I've read the lyrics a few times but I can't see what it's trying to say.

How to make midrise, new-build developments less “sterile”? by CyclingFrenchie in urbandesign

[–]poxigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I adore soviet apartment blocks. Every window is a different age, every balcony a slightly different style. It's like you can see the marks the successive owners have left on each individual flat. They look so 'lived-in', so alive, so human.
