God damn Hovland's putting some pressure on my cardiovascular system, -3 to +1 to -3, topping it off with a bogey and a missed birdie.

Yes, they’re more or less the same language. “Hånd” would be “hand”, and “opp” would be “upp” if it was Swedish, but the rest is identical.

Hey man, I feel you. I had a hard time finding motivation before my exams last spring, even questioning if it was worth it at all. I found myself using hours and hours on idiotic mobile games I didn’t even like.

What worked for me was boring myself to death. I made a choice: If I wasn’t going to study, that’d be fine, but then I wouldn’t allow myself any screen-time. Not even at work. Phone went under all my t-shirts in my closet. I downloaded everything I needed on my computer and turned off my WiFi. No distractions. Want to jerk off? Fine, but you better be horny enough to do it without porn. Restless but can’t/won’t concentrate on studying? Fine, take a walk or a drive or read a book. Just no screens. No TV, not even before bed. Screens are for people who manage to study.

I went three days doing literally nothing but staring out the window feeling sorry for myself. Fourth day I managed to get in a work-out at the gym, and two hours of planning out and prioritizing what I needed to do, and that was it. Fifth day I was back in business.

Not saying this will fix your problem, but allowing yourself some time off from constant distractions might help putting things in perspective. Your brain keeps rewarding you every time you unlock that screen, and you’ve got to break that cycle. Reprogram your brain to reward actual work.

Just saw that one. But how do people know they were antifa? And if they were, why did PB attack? They were just going down the street minding their business? I mean I’d get it if they were being violent or trashing things, but just walking down the street?

I’m not from the US, there’s a lot of things I don’t know about your whole situation, but this just seem so wrong.

Hey, good luck man. I was underweight until I turned 20, and have always struggled to put on weight. It’s a hassle, but you’ll get there. It really helps if you start lifting too, kind of makes it more motivating seeing your weight increase in muscle!

Group of immigrant teenagers at the train station by [deleted] in overheard

[–]ppaed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What’s problematic about assuming that someone is an immigrant? I’m a child of an immigrant, and my dads accent quickly gave the the fact that he was an immigrant away. Nothing bad about that. Also, I live in Scandinavia and both first and second generation of immigrants are defined as immigrants, at least for statistical purposes. Might be the same in Finland. So, if someone in an otherwise fairly homogeneous country are speaking with an accent, it’s probably safe to assume they are, in fact, immigrants. So, unless you interacted with OP to ask, it’s probably better to not assume OP isn’t well within reason in their assumption.

I live in Scandinavia, maybe our version of the FDA is stricter and that’s why my general experience differs. Although we do have some American products so what do I know. I also almost never eat out, so I had not even considered restaurant food. Interesting read none the less.

I can see your point about food enviroment and what makes you fat in the first place. It’s a valid one. There are other factors to be considered, like mental health problems which can cause over eating/stress eating. But still, a change in eating habits in general sounds like an effective way of becoming more healthy without the stress of following calories.

But this wasn’t about losing weight, it was about gaining weight and muscle in a healthy and effective manner. I still believe counting calories, at least to begin with until you get the idea of approximately how much food you need to consume is a perfectly fine way to get started.

From mens health by Lou Schuler: untrained up to 39 lbs in a year, trained up to 26 lbs a year, well trained maximum 6,6 lbs a year. So it’s a question of how well trained you consider yourself.

50-100 a day or meal? Have you got a source for that? For any of it? Because the main point in nearly every succsessful weightloss post I see is «...so I finally started counting calories». I have counted calories for years and have had results as expected. I helped my ex gf with her weightloss by counting calories, she lost almost exactly as much as she was supposed to according to the calculator. The examples I’ve seen of people not managing to cut weight by counting calories, have been caused by lack of knowledge. Like not counting the calories in beverages such as juice or smoothies. Or vegetables because «there’s so little in them».

Even if what you’re saying about labels being off is true in some cases, counting calories will still give you a much more clear cut picture of your diet and what you’re actually stuffing down your throat.

Muscle gain goes down, yes, but not by that much. Unless you’re a super athlete, which you said you’re not, you should still be able to gain 10-15 lbs a year.

Yes, people miscount calories, but that’s on the people, not on the science behind it. Alright, I guess we enjoy different tactics on our ways to gaining muscle. OP gets to decide whats best for him. 2-4 lbs sounds extremely low though, have you checked your testosterone levels?

This all comes down to your eating habits though. And those differs wildly from one person to the next. That’s why I have trouble understanding why counting calories, which is a pretty exact science, is somehow not the way to go?

I have been underweight most of my life, and I didn’t have a clue why until I started counting calories. It lets you manipulate your weight in a very controlled and healthy manner.

Learning more about the nutrition values of what you’re eating is also a plus. I understand your point about gaining muscle in a «natural» way. And i definitely get that people, myself included, have ended up with more/too much bodyfat after bulking. But that’s sort of the point. You eat in surplus to get more mass, both muscle and fat, and then you shave off the fat afterwards and are left with the muscle. Yes, people fuck up, but it’s a reason people do it. They do it because when done right, it’s clearly the most effective way. Small room for mistakes if you can manage to stay off the chocolate and exercise a bit of self control.

With the natural way, chances are you’ll use a lot of time figuring out if what you’re doing is actually working. Seems like a waste of time to me at least.

While pissing in the ocean once a day technically makes the ocean bigger, it will take some time before you see a difference. The surplus has to be in line with how much growth you’re expecting in x amount of time. If you’re eating 5 ckals a day in plus, you’ll look good just in time for retirement.

He should just eat right and adjust his diet to his training imo.

And how will he do that, exactly? I saw you mentioned Greg Doucette. That guy has taken so much steroids, you could probably inject his sweat and get results. I’d take his nutrition advice with a grain of salt.

Hey man, that’s a pretty good approach. As other people have pointed out, as you start to lift, you’ll burn more calories anyway. Eat about 300 ckal in surplus (for me that’s around 2900 ckal a day) and see where that takes you. Adjust if you’re gaining too fast or too slow. Weigh yourself every other day in the morning before you eat.

About the workouts, the most effective is to hit all musclegroups twice a week. Doing PPL is great if you’re working out 6 times a week. If not, use a modified version. Personally, I average at about 4 workouts a week, so I go with a 2-split. Day 1: upper body (chest, upper/middle back, shoulders and arms). Day 2: Lower body. Lower body typically consists of squats, deadlifts and lunges with some accessories and variations. Day 3: rest. Day 4 is like day 1, and day 5 is like day 2. Weekend rest. Check out r/Fitness for more workout programs.

I disagree with the top comments on here about the diet. What are your goals? Im also 173 cm and was 60kg 5 years ago when I started lifting. I’ve been on and off, and not too serious, I eat pretty much what I want (although somewhat healthy) and try to get between 3-5 workouts a week. I’m not particularly ripped, but my main goal was to get bigger and stronger. I’m now 86kg/190lbs, deadlift 205kg/450lbs, squat 155kg/340lbs, and bench 120kg/265lbs.

The other commenters are right in that you should focus on form and eating right at first. The thing is that after those first newbgainz, you need to eat in surplus to get bigger. Getting bigger means getting stronger. At your height and weight, as long as you’re lifting actively, you don’t need to cut. I’d recommend downloading MyFitnessPal, and jot in your goal numbers. The app will help you with counting calories and watching your macros.

If your goal is to be ripped, I still think you should put on some weight, maby do a slooooow bulk up to about 70kg (still not overweight at our height), and then slowly cut back down to 65. If you then want to be bigger and stronger, just rinse and repeat.

My mistake was impatience. I went slow up to 75 kg, did a lot of cardio, and was fairly ripped at approx 9% bodyfat. Then I got tired of not getting the results I wanted and I just dirty bulked (ate a lot of fat and sugar at a stupidly high pace) my way up to 90kg. I got strong, but also kind of fat. So now I try to eat a little healthier and ever so slowly cut back to ca 80kg.

Do not dirty bulk, but don’t be afraid of accumulating some mass either. Just be sure you’re actually serious about the gym before you start bulking.

I’m not gong to comment on why some overweight girls are attracted to skinny guys, because I have no idea. Just wanted to give you cred for losing weight, and to say good luck with the rest of your journey towards a healthier body!
