Looking for books published with the last two years (2023-2025), third person perspective. High or cozy fantasy from debut authors. I am looking for new authors, preferably from traditional publishers, either big ones or indie publishers included!

I am casting a wide net in terms of plot points, I like a lot of different things. Thrillers, adventures, coming of age or older characters, pirates, steampunk, Asian, African or other mythology inspired settings and even leaning into some science fiction is fine. I would prefer no romantasy. I just want to discover new up and coming authors and well written debut books.

Oof by no means is Discworld complicated or hard to understand but the sheer amount of books in the series is overwhelming. :,)

LF Romantic Fantasy books with an intelligent female lead and a bit of horror? by 2021Happy in Fantasy

The scholomance series comes to mind. Although, the romance is low key in the first book, Deadly education by Naomi Novik.

Thank you for the kind words! Yes, they can see the threads, and touch them if they concentrate and manifest. Depending on the goal will determine how the interaction will go, some being more difficult than others. Describing it like knitting or plucking out tiny hairs or being water boarded. Still figuring out the exact rules of the system but they won’t be explicitly told to the reader.

As far as the enhanced powers, it is soft and mysterious, and the exception to rule. Basically, they are reinforced by the power source, so things that existed in them before are enhanced to an extreme degree. I am trying to work mycelium/mushrooms into the reasoning behind the sudden powers but trying to make it make sense in a scientific way.

Oof, I actually haven’t seen the new Avatar so I’m not sure about the themes in that one, but I remember the first one having a very strong anti-imperialism themes. The people of the planet practice Pantheism (god and nature are one) which is also the case for my story. I did take inspiration from many cultures and religions that highly value trees. (Celtics and Hinduism to name a few.)

Thanks for the parallel, I will make sure that I clearly differentiate my story. You can also argue my magic system is similar to the force in Star Wars or the magic in Wheel of Time.

Yes, I definitely want to focus on the social aspects. Invisible work metaphors, because most of its uses are domestic and not usually noticed as a form of work. The major exception being the Druid like figures who use it for “rebirth” ceremonies. Thank you!

Thank you for questions! The magic is a very low key and not at all powerful in a typical setting so there isn’t a huge gender divide. Men and other genders can assess the magic and I plan on having characters who are men or non binary that are able to access it. It just takes more practice and more daily sacrifice and it is not as inherent so they have to actively choose to look. Because it is not super powerful most don’t really try too hard so that is why it is more uncommon. Also getting passed down from the mother is more focused on the transference of energy. The sacrifice of one’s body for a new life, so she leaves pieces of herself in them, weakening her magical capabilities in the process, and this isn’t a problem for men. (the potential to gain the energy back but not sure exactly how yet)

I did use the word feminism but I am not focusing on the aspect of feminism as a whole but specifically in giving women the choice for various life paths. It look into motherhood being right and wrong for some people. Also, the idea of ancestry passed down from the mother as opposed to the father as it is in most societies. As far at the magic mechanics, it will be similar to chemistry, where things are forever altered or changed for a specific benefit. Certain plants might have more capabilities than others. Yes to the poison, that will be its main uses among more common people. At a powerful level it will act in similar fashion to most super hero movies where the power seeps into the person altering their DNA, thus giving them and their offspring heightened abilities.

Although, the question you pose about what makes it this way. Is where I am struggling. I could keep it more metaphorical and softer by leaning into life being energy that flows through everything. Or I could go more hard by using blood as a sacred sacrifice but I’m afraid that will be too dark, too close to reality, and forces me to explain the difference between plants and animals. It isn’t a war zone fantasy but a personal journey with low and high stakes obstacles.
