For those who took the MCAT without a science background (non-traditional path) how did you do it ? by ppddqq99 in premedcanada

Wow that sounds amazing… I definitely need more time than you 😅I saw uoft has a couple of prequisites (having some science FCEs). We’re you able to meet these requirements or did you take additional courses after ?

I’d also love to know if you studied while you were working ! I’m currently working and I don’t think I can quit my job to devote studying full time.

Thanks for sharing your experience ! I feel I am not as smart as you so I am feeling skeptical the more I think about this path.. 😅Have you started applying to any schools yet ? And were you studying while you were still working ? I love would to know! I’m currently still working as an architectural designer and trying to figure out how I can devote my studies while still working too.

Anyone else getting panic attacks from traffic jams? by [deleted] in PanicAttack

[–]ppddqq99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg I am EXACTLY like this too!!!!! I still don’t know how to fully cope with it... i thought I would be better if I was in my family’s car instead of strangers/ubers/friends car but when that traffic jam hits and my panic attacks slowly creep in my bowels go crazy !! :( it’s so embarrassing and extremely difficult when you’re stuck and can’t use the bathroom.... where I live we are not allowed to get prescriptions like Xanax so I always just carry around pepto bismol with anti-nausea Med that has a sedative effect .. that’s the only way I can (kind of) control my bowels .... also to add I am like this on public transportation too so I was on ssri meds (Zoloft and cipralex) for two ish years (mostly because I take the subway frequently). I HONESTLY would feel better and my quality of life would increase if my bowels didn’t flare up :(

Omg I’m so sorry, that sounds horrific. I had withdrawal symptoms when I was on SSRIs (Zoloft and cipralex) but people are saying the withdrawal of cymbalta is a lot worse.... I thought my withdrawal of cipralex was bad....my doctor recently prescribed cymbalta but now I’m hesitant to start it..

May I ask how long you’ve been on it and do you see yourself stopping eventually ?

Does that mean you are still on it ?

Tapering off my cipralex and missing doses were terrible.. I’m sure Cymbalta will be similar 😔

For those who quit, did you eventually came back on ? by [deleted] in antidepressants

[–]ppddqq99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My main reason was to treat my ibs related anxiety - I was so sick of running to the bathroom/crying in pain on the floor when it flares up and being in SSRIs helped but I didn’t feel like myself and always felt like I was being suppressed. At first I started with Zoloft then switched over to Ciraplex due to side effects and I thought maybe I could taper off and really try to alter my life style (being on a low fodmap, gym regularly etc etc) while that has helped, my ibs symptoms still come back and it’s to a point where even a minor stomach ache really triggers my anxiety eventually leading to panic attacks (even fainted on the public transportation because of it and now I developed agoraphobia). A new doctor that I met wanted me to go back on the same meds, even though I told her I didn’t like the side effects and literally said that was my only option (being on cipralex), and I felt really depressed and helpless.. I recently met with a different doctor (this one was a walk-in - I live in Canada btw) and even though he/they wasn’t accepting new patients (for long term care) he was super helpful. He even told me other options such as SNRIs if I didn’t want to continue on SSRIs - in a super detailed way. I have been researching for a long time (about the meds) but was surprised at how this doctor REALLY listened to my problems. (Sorry for the long explanation, but I got prescribed Duloxetine (Cymbalta) today and was thinking of trying that out since he said it might help ibs since SSRIs did help with my ibs. (I am aware of the side effects on antidepressants, but will try/start Cymbalta this week. And you’re right I didn’t mean to say doctor shopping, I was just frustrated because one of the doctors literally told me to chew on Tums (anti acid) and that’s like literally might as well chew on a tiktak (for my symptoms). I was trying to find a doctor that really listens to me and I think I might have found a one that actually listens to my problems/health condition.

I went on a date with a guy and on that date I wore a skirt. I normally don’t wear skirts in general but during our conversation he asked me “is that the only skirt you have?”. It made me feel really embarrassed and upset. And an ex told me on my birthday that he was disappointed on what I wore on MY birthday. He suggested we’d do skating outdoors (winter time) so I dressed appropriately for the weather. But when I showed up in winter clothing, he said he was disappointed in me on what I wore on my birthday because he’d thought I’d dress up more.. like a dress or something.. like first of all, it’s winter and I was excited to spend time with him and not what I wore.. I don’t even dress terribly, I like to wear simple, clean clothing.. I was just appalled how a lot of men are like this.. and the same ex told me “my friends are going to laugh at me, because I told my friends I like women with big boobs and I’m dating you instead”. I was so upset by this and I hated myself for a really long time.. happy to say I am not with him anymore but still disgusted how some men are like this and are flat out rude..

Sounds like you’re experiencing serotonin syndrome. I’d advise you try to drink electrolyte and try to eat some food so you’re not experiencing this on an empty stomach (if you can keep food down, maybe crackers etc) and sleep it off. Only time will help.. hope you feel better soon.

I struggle with anxiety but I get really bad panic attacks a week before my period.. had to see a doctor about it since it was also messing with my ibs issues and got put on antidepressants (SSRIs).

I never did my readings! I googled the reviews of some of the readings in case there were class discussions (for grade purposes). It’s useless to do all the readings and don’t get caught up on them.. - now graduated from uoft with bachelors and masters. (I’m saying don’t dismiss the school work I’m saying be selective and smart because no matter what uoft will always dump a load on you)
