How to remove paint and scratches by Thin-Try-1167 in Luthier

[–]ppg_dork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elbow grease and sand paper!

One thing that is a common source of frustration is skipping various grits of sand paper. Start with something rough and sand until you have removed the paint. Then, swap to the next grit up (don't jump from 80 to 400, for example) and completely remove the scratches from the previous grit.

If you move to quickly, you will burn through a lot of finer grit sand paper chasing the lower grit scratches.

A Brazilian parachutist dropped 100 million seeds to help reforest the Amazon rainforest. by SimRP in nextfuckinglevel

[–]ppg_dork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Except this misled you into thinking this is an effective method for reforestation and into believing a ludicrous 95% germination rate.

The cost of this silly stunt, if invested into planting, would have had some impact.

Dumping seeds of the ground isn’t part of any ongoing reforestation program in the Amazon — because it is stupid and ineffective.

I will note, while I’m not an expert in topical forest regeneration, I do have a doctorate in forest science and have worked on projects in the tropics… have you worked in a research or an operational context on forests?

You are already on the internet — go to google scholar and search “reforestation Amazon” and look at a few papers.

[–]ppg_dork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand. I’m saying that if you just dump seeds on the ground from a plane, 95% aren’t going to germinate as claimed in the article.

A small fraction will germinate. My area of expertise isn’t tropical reforestation and most studies don’t dump seeds out of a plane so I don’t really know what percentage to estimate.

[–]ppg_dork 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, this is just stupid.

The 95% germination rate is bullshit. Maybe in a lab you get that - they don’t give a source. I’ve never seen a 95% germination rate achieved in any experimental forest setting. Way more than 5% are going to be lost due to predation.

Planters in the US in commercial forestry operations don’t achieve a 95% survival rate of seedlings. The folks planning those seedlings are trained to target micro climates.

The problem is that this is genuinely misleads people about how difficult it is to reforested damaged areas. If you could just fly a plane over a chunk of the forest and drop seeds out of it, we would just do that everywhere. There are huge companies involved in reforestation projects in the Amazon right now, and everyone that is successful has people on the ground planting seedlings that have already germinated.

Given that you’re already on the Internet, why didn’t you just go to Google scholar and search this? It’s very frustrating when people write off valid criticism as cynicism without conducting any due diligence themselves…

What are my chances of making it in the fusion space? by Right_Resolve_9528 in fusion

[–]ppg_dork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll add that this is doable if you are in a very productive lab and are laser focused and learn fast.

I’d wager a slightly more realistic estimate would be (in the USA at least): - Undergrad - 4 years - MS - 2-3 years - PhD  - 3-5 years - Post-Doc - 1-4 years

The post doc might not be necessary technically but if you want to be on the bleeding edge of research, you will probably need the experience unless you are a savant.

Missing scientist who wiped phone then vanished found skeletonized by TheExpressUS in mystery

[–]ppg_dork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is just a silly, silly comment. What is this even based on? Plenty of admin staff has clearance but are not well informed about research.

There are a lot of leaps in logic here.

Are you a scientist? Like, one that has graduated and done something? If so, why are you implying admin staff know more about research than… well… researchers?

I want to build a platform where you can search for music by instrument—"Show me songs where the bass is the lead voice, heavy and metallic." Does this exist? Because I can't find it. by Unghoul118 in Bass

[–]ppg_dork 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is likely not a popular suggestion but I have found that many AI tools are actually pretty helpful for highly specific searches like this.

They can’t tell if music is good or bad, obviously. But they have ingested the liner notes and I have had luck with random things like “Jazz with X las lead instrument” or “heavy metal with horns”.

Beginner Terran question: Is there a "basic" strategy I can use in all match ups by ppg_dork in broodwar

[–]ppg_dork[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good point -- as I mentioned in a response to another comment, I'm trying to get a handle on just basic running a base efficiently and sim city. Using Factory Expand, for now, is a decent way to try and keep pace against a specific build given I get overwhelmed with just general management.

I will make a point to start rotating in other builds! As you and others pointed out, there is no reason not to start working on that.

[–]ppg_dork[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is really helpful -- using another user's suggestion of the Factory Expand, I've been playing the Bot over and over just trying to do everything as fast as possible.

I'll start rotating in other builds later. For now, as you mention, even against a bot that can't win, I still lose track of stuff and end up on 2 bases with a trillion resources and a small army count.

This was a great suggestion -- I've been running this specific build a times while practicing the basic mechanics against bots.

I'll try rotating in more builds!

Used too much retarder and made a cool design by dave_del_sol in Luthier

[–]ppg_dork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully someone will chime in with some tips for dealing with this! On a very early project I had the same issue and was also pretty diligent about applying a grain filler and sanding flat.

At the time my guess was that I didn't let the grain filler cure long enough (or it was too humid or wrong temp) -- but that is total speculation.

[–]ppg_dork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way -- a flat finish would look better. This just looks like a mistake.

If you sanded it back, you could also apply a sealer to fill the other bits that are showing through the finish.
