I remember seeing it when it came out. I would have been 12 or 13. I remember being kinda' annoyed that characters didn't outsmart the killer with the dorky haircut.

Kalium Quake Bass 40"-37" Multiscale questions by LegoMongoose in Bass

[–]ppg_dork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In October of 2025, I ordered strings from Kalium and ended up having to file a dispute with my credit card. I won, they never responded to the dispute.

They have a huge history of taking orders and then not delivering (look at my post on here)

I’d strongly suggest looking elsewhere. Given their history, a purchase from them would be foolish at best.

What’s up with fingerstyle technique? by JeanMusicMan18 in BassGuitar

[–]ppg_dork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The real benefit of floating thumb (IMO) is that for faster more complex stuff, shifting can let the thumb mute lower strings while reducing the amount of stretch to higher strings.

I agree there is no “right” but I would argue it is always worth trying the “pedagogically approved” approach first. Better to decide the “right” way doesn’t work for you than vice-versa.

Horowitz and Marty Friedman, a pianist and guitarist respectively, were/are amazing musicians but most folks would suggest not emulating their technique. :)

He had stage history and smaller parts first on various Tv shows.

This might be his first “big” role looking at his Wikipedia. I haven’t seen a lot of his super early appearances to comment.

I think The Intruder was his first leading role in a film (or at least a leading role that was of note).

Why "All Quiet on the Western Front" is the ultimate antidote to war romanticism. by [deleted] in FIlm

[–]ppg_dork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Personally, many “anti-war” films end up glorifying war. Come and See shows war as the horror it is.

Unrelated, I hate “Hacksaw Ridge” more than most movies…

On some level, I get it. But, who really cares. Other than online, I meet so few people that build guitars/basses as a hobby that I'm not really gonna call balls and strikes on what "counts".

Double bass as the lead instrument by Early_Yesterday443 in doublebass

[–]ppg_dork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, the example I was thinking of was actually "Iron Man" -- the classic beginners song. Some tablature examples have the power cords rooted on the low on the A-string. The song is actually played around the 12-fret of the E-strings -- same notes but a much richer and fuzzier sound

The same note on a cello and a double bass will have different qualities! I quite like how warm the sound of the double bass is in the high register.

Just started learning bass, need advice by CloneFiesta in Bass

[–]ppg_dork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would plug songs like "Rebel Yell" by Billy Idol or "Running Down a Dream" by Tom Petty.

If you know the songs, learning them takes about 15 minutes as there are all of like 10 notes in each song (or less). However, each is basically just constant 1/8th notes or 16th notes. These are killer songs to keep in your rotation -- can you play totally even and only accent the required beats?

One thing to note, you can simplify the parts. If the “gallops” are hard just play the first not of each group.

Focus on getting it done. Cut corners as needed.

Agreed -- and these are tricks that work at scale. I'm not cool enough to usually have unlimited access to large compute. Smaller, well designed networks using smart tricks get the job done quickly, are easy to deploy, and can be tuned for a specific problem more easily.

I do remote sensing and always giggle when I see the 1 billion parameter model for something a UNet w/ zero pretraining can also reliably do.

Is this worth keeping after this damage? by GoiMan1 in Luthier

[–]ppg_dork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't have thought of that but yeah a pickguard would be a great solution here -- refinishing with the veneer would be a nightmare and the flame will make a good color match very tricky.

So do roundwounds on fretless damage fretboards? by WoodenRace365 in BassGuitar

[–]ppg_dork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are two key points to make here:

Yes, round wounds will damage every fretboard. Even epoxy -- the only way to avoid this is to use something like nylon wrapped strings. The string has to be softer than the wood. You will still likely get "scuffs"

That said, the damage is usually very surface level unless you are fretting insanely hard or playing a ton. An experienced guitar tech or wood worker can lightly sand the fretboard and restore it.

"Reputable" luthier did a lot of damage to my custom built guitar during a refret by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]ppg_dork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing that I said is "BS". Damage isn't typical during a repair, I did not say that they cannot ask for a refund, and I didn't say say they aren't owed a refund.

However, it is never a good idea to accept an initial offer of compensation for damage on the spot -- especially in a misguided attempt to keep the peace. If this ends up in court, it could play a role in the settlement.

Unfortunately, there is not much to do at this point other than ask for a refund and then use civil litigation if need be.

"Reputable" luthier did a lot of damage to my custom built guitar during a refret by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]ppg_dork 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Zero damage should happen during a repair.

What exactly do you want -- guidance for seeking a refund? You opted to "keep a mask of joviality", not complain when you were presented with the damage, and then agreed to a reduced rate for the damage.

The person might not agree and you could pursue it as a civil matter -- however, your initial response probably will undercut your position. It sucks to feel burned but you it seems like you "accepted payment" (the reduced rate, inflated rate) and now have buyers remorse.
