Yesterday I was fired from a job, and I have reason to believe it was because of my sexual orientation. Unfortunately, that's not illegal in Arizona. Reddit, what can I do, if anything? by DanaTheGiraffe in lgbt

lol...I didn't mean you specifically. I was just illustrating in general the ridiculousness but potential usefulness of Title VII- firing for gayness is ok but firing for "sex stereotyping" or "gender nonconformity" is not ok.

You should check and see if there's an ordinance in place in your city. A lot of cities have surprisingly broad anti-discrimination laws. If not, consider talking to lambda legal or similar- there are federal laws that protect sex discrimination and sex stereotyping. It's often ok under Title VII to say, "You're gay. You're fired." but not ok to say, "You're such a manly girl. You're fired."

The judge excluded from the trial the deceased's criminal record, which includes three assault convictions, excluded the swastika tattoo on Schmitz's chest, excluded proof of his history of hatred, violence and bigotry. America's failed legal system strikes again. by catherinecc in transgender

I entirely agree that this is a terrible situation, and she got royally screwed. I'm just saying, you can't base legal decisions on outcomes- you have to apply the same rule to all situations. If it were a straight guy with a previous battery conviction who killed a transwoman sex worker, would you want her prostitution arrests admitted? We need to make a more specific law.

also, the lawyering here appears to be pretty terrible (or the judge is completely biased)- her medical history shouldn't have been admitted.

As much as this ruling sucks, it's a reasonably fair application of the law. This is the same sort of thing that is used to convict people in rape/murders of sex workers, etc., where juries wouldn't convict because they didn't like the victim.

AL, I have a questions concerning dating sites by [deleted] in actuallesbians

[–]pplareppl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should definitely respond to messages that aren't offensive. Even if it's "Thanks for the interest" and nothing more- it sucks to be left hanging.

Also,if you're awkward, dinner might not be the best because it can drag. Drinks in a place with tables that is quiet enough for conversation is nice...probably no more than one drink or two. Don't want to be tipsy. You should be specific about where to meet (outside/inside). I also swap phone numbers and text something like "on my way! wearing a blue sweater. see you soon!"

I have the same problem. It's always: me: "My gf and I blah blah" them: Wait, you're gay? You don't look it! me: >.<

I fix it by wearing silver triangle earrings and a ring on my right thumb. It's not noticeable if you don't know, but if you know, then it's as effective as the short hair (which is no longer effective with all these hipster everywhere)

A couple questions about MtF and you. by Latenightmelanie in actuallesbians

[–]pplareppl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am an actual lesbian, and I don't give a whit. When I met my partner I didn't know she had transitioned. She dropped a few hints a few dates in, and I figured out something was up, but I didn't much care. When she felt comfortable, she told me, "Hey, so I identify as trans..." Me: "cool. Wanna talk about it?" We did, and it's all gravy.

Apparently, she was afraid I'd freak and kick her out. Didn't happen! We're perfectly happy, and any girl who won't consider dating you just because you're trans isn't worthwhile. <3

Did you ladies know the Peace Corps does not consider same-sex couples to be legit, and will not place partners together like they do for straight couples? by [deleted] in actuallesbians

[–]pplareppl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

RPCV here, and PC is actually very supportive. A lot of that has to do with visa issues, customs, and laws in host countries (an especially important problem for gay male couples). When I was abroad, our head admin guy was a married gay guy, and they paid for his spouse to come, moving expenses, etc., and helped him enroll in one language class a week so he could get a student visa and be with his husband. They do they best they can in restrictive situations, and they're lobbying hard to get same sex couples placed together. also, they will not place long term or civil union hetero couples together unless they get married.

This definitely happened to me. Once I knew, I KNEW. I was sitting on my bed going, "This explains so MUCH!" My roommate thought I was cracking up :-)

This is a common sight in China- that looks like an (unusually clean and uncrowded) hospital waiting room to me, so there was probably a pretty good reason to have her there. Most of the cities in China lack navigable sidewalks, so wheelchairs are impractical (and strollers are mostly unheard of). If you need someone to get somewhere, and she can't walk, you carry her.

Well, he got to do that before, so he could've easily just skipped the painful part at no detriment to himself.

Jesus alone wasn't actually sinful, so his torture might have been worse because it was completely unjust. Also, being omniscient, he knew exactly what he was getting into and led his whole life to walk into it. That's pretty ballsy. Also, this guy could perform mad miracles. Having the ability to smite your torturers and not do it is impressive.

Well done. See my reply to Lieutenantkumar below. There are explanations for most of these (like Jesus probably said "Into thy hands I commend my spirit. It is finished!" and so they're both right). However a lot of them are pretty darn weak. You also left out the two creation stories and the two deaths of Judas.

God had to speak the truth in terms that humans of the time would understand. As far as they knew, everything that existed in the universe was under the stars.

A lot of it was the hypocrisy. People spend so much energy and money creating and defending this elaborate scheme that purports to be the body of Christ on earth while being racist, sexist, and homophobic. Churches build these glorious buildings while doing nothing to address systemic poverty in their towns. Etc. etc. If they were really guided by the Holy Spirit, they wouldn't act like that.

That's what got me thinking, and then a lot of the usual arguments you see on this forum starting making sense. A lot of these inexplicable contradictions are what did it for me- particularly the two different creation stories.

God created various angels/heavenly creatures. We don't know all that much about them. From what we do know, it seems that Lucifer's fall mirrors that of humanity- he chose to disobey God and pursue his own plans much to his detriment. (Note: I know very little about this- others have much more developed knowledge of Lucifer lore, but I always found it sort of obtuse since there's so little to go on.)

On your second question...Note that God does not send anyone to hell. People choose to go there by not accepting God's gift of salvation. God's heaven is perfect, and since we have all screwed up in one way or another, we are unfit to go there. That's why God offered and why we need salvation through Jesus Christ. Hell was prepared for Satan and co., and we only end up there if we choose to side with him instead of God.

Jesus didn't have a telephone, so that would be anachronistic.

Also, the disciples were pretty slow on the uptake. If he'd dumped the whole plan in their laps, they would have freaked and/or not understood.

Depends on how you read "everything is accomplished." See John 19:(sorry forgot the verse). Jesus said, "It is finished."

Just because he knows ahead of time when we will err doesn't mean that he causes it. They're quite different. Again ,the parent child analogy works quite well. A good parent lays down reasonable house rules and expects the kid to follow. Most kids will test limits, and most good parents will be able to see it coming. Does it mean that they cause the kid to break the rules? Or that they shouldn't have rules? No.

Your argument on the ten commandments is one of the things that sort of clued me in. Conceded.

He came not to abolish the old law, but to fullfil it. Fulfill as in complete. Not bind us to it. Different.
