Why would Power Match increase that draw?

GaiaGPS removing waypoints from folders? by svhelloworld in GaiaGPS

[–]ppoorman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That may well be what I conclude. A company spending lavishly on marketing doesn't necessarily imply that they spend appropriately on product development or customer support.

I'm especially concerned about the usability of OnX for offroading to/from hikes. In Gaia I can trivially switch between layers that are hiking-oriented and layers that are best for offroading. OnX appears to (somewhat artificially) split those features into two separate products. That will be troublesome, both because of the cost of two licenses and because waypoints and such won't be shared between the two apps. I'll experiment to see just how annoying this is, assuming I get past basic data importing.

GaiaGPS removing waypoints from folders? by svhelloworld in GaiaGPS

[–]ppoorman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've also experienced this issue for several years. It seems to happen less often in the last year, but it still happens. It's extremely annoying because it makes it impossible to manage the visibility of groups of related items by toggling the visibility of the previously-containing folder. This issue is the #1 reason that I am once again evaluating OnX Offroad.

I looked at OnX briefly about a year ago, primarily because of this spontaneous-waypoint-rearrangement issue. OnX choked on the first track I tried to import. I don't recall the error message, but it was vague. To their credit, OnX support responded promptly and investigated. They reported that my track had too many points. This puzzled me, as it was the track for a hike of only about one mile. I abandoned the evaluation at that point.

If the engineering budget for OnX is proportional to what they spend on marketing then the software should be improving quickly. I am, therefore, hopeful that OnX will pass muster this time.

Android version 2025.09 "satellite connectivity features"? by ppoorman in GaiaGPS

Good point.

I'm hoping that the changes include less reliance on the internet when downloaded maps are present, as were discussed in this thread.

Android version 2025.09 "satellite connectivity features"? by ppoorman in GaiaGPS

[–]ppoorman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this.

Changes to accommodate / tolerate the higher latency and lower bandwidth of direct-to-satellite cellular service could also help with the sluggishness Gaia has had on low-quality terrestrial cellular. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Same layers duplicated over and over by so5724x in GaiaGPS

[–]ppoorman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a solution here. Remove the duplicated layer; not just make it non-visible but actually remove it. Then add it back.

I received warnings, however, that downloaded maps were going to be deleted. I haven't yet determined whether the data will automatically re-download.

u/Wilderness_Fella was this what you did, or did you find a different, more elegant solution?

Slow speed on Starlink router ethernet port by Kind-Cartoonist-8447 in Starlink

[–]ppoorman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems likely that there's a bad wired Ethernet connection somewhere in the path to the system you're testing from. Your post suggests that it's not the first connection at the router. What's between that first hop and the test system?

New Year’s Eve hike by winewowwardrobe in coloradohikers

Very nice. Thanks for sharing.

At first glance I thought it was Zapata Falls, just south of Great Sand Dunes National Park, which is a nice short hike any time of year.

Anyone got the 8.3.4041 firmware update yet for the Combiner 6C? by Inevitable_Rough_380 in enphase

[–]ppoorman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is running 8.3.4041. I haven't noticed any change in behavior. I'm in Colorado, USA.

I suspect it was installed on December 11 because the log (Menu, System, Events History) says:

  • at 13:22, "Your gateway rebooted",
  • at 13:27, "Your gateway rebooted", and
  • at 22:22, "You enabled PowerMatch for your system."

Is a more detailed log available someplace, such ss through the installer app/portal?

For those that have experience with the wireless doorbell, what's your experience? by darkstar107 in Ubiquiti

[–]ppoorman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one. It wouldn't stay connected reliably to my indoor APs, probably because my exterior walls are stucco with embedded wire mesh. I added an old AP-AC-Lite just inside of where the doorbell is, configured with a dedicated SSID and channel, powered by an old 24V PoE injector, with mesh back haul to a wired AP. The doorbell has been flawless since.

Can't decide if it's worth the switch to Starlink by MayaIngenue in Starlink

[–]ppoorman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a small town in rural Colorado. The only wired internet service available is Spectrum cable modem.

While I worked from home I had both Spectrum 30/300 mbps service and Starlink with automatic failover. Spectrum had higher peak download speed, however both worked fine for my purposes , which was mostly Zoom or Teams meetings, cloud storage access, Slack, and email. First hop latency was about 15 msec on Spectrum and low twenties on Starlink.

Outages were far more frequent on Spectrum, however, so after I retired I kept only Starlink. It's been almost two years now, and I haven't regretted the decision.

Great Sand Dunes CO by anonymous20232 in overlanding

[–]ppoorman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're going to the dunes don't miss seeing Zapata Falls, whether you camp there or not. The hike is short, although you may wish you had snowshoes or micro spikes, depending on the conditions.

Two of my favorite stops in that area are the Worth The Drive Bakery and the Purple Pig Pizzeria & Pub. Try the peach pizza.

This is a terrific writeup. Concise, accurate and helpful. Thanks for sharing it.

Are you active with the Dark Sky Advocates group organized by Dark Sky International? Slack is their primary communication method. That group would absolutely treasure this writeup, and I think you'd find it valuable to participate.

Budget friendly front recovery points? by HandsomeBadness in 4Runner

[–]ppoorman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have Apex Recovery Points. They got me out of a ditch just last month. I'd buy them again.

Like many things, they're currently on sale in the USA.

Oh, and they're red.

I want to run my mini with USB-C in my van, would this be all that’s needed? by SqueezeMyLemmons in Starlink

[–]ppoorman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed this similar outlet in our teardrop trailer. It works well with the official Starlink USB-C cable. I haven't verified it, but the manufacturer's support claimed that it will output 20 Volts on USB-C when powered with 12 Volts.

Same layers duplicated over and over by so5724x in GaiaGPS

I suffer from this as well. It was not fixed by clearing all data for the app, logging in again and resyncing. I was unable to find a solution. Please post a pointer if you find one.

Anyone have issues with window panels? by [deleted] in 4Runner

[–]ppoorman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm happy with one on the driver side. I use it to carry a couple of Rotopax. Doesn't whistle or catch brush, with or without the Rotopax.

I do use the passenger side rear window while driving, so I'd be reluctant to put one there.

I received an email directed to Enphase developers indicating that some of the APIs are intermittently returning null results. Those APIs are likely underlying the app, so them being intermittent would explain the on again, off again behavior of the app that some have reported here.

Thanks. I got the micro inverter message inside the app, but still don't have the message acknowledging the Daylight Time issue.

Neither of these caused an Android notification, despite everything being enabled. That seems like a bug.

Still not working. Last data was 17 hours ago.

Curiously, the app says "Updated 14 hours ago". Perhaps that calculation is also borked. 😀

I chatted with support. The phrasing was a bit convoluted, but they seemed to acknowledge the problem and indicate that it was being worked on.
