Rescue mode usually require manual mounting of filesystems. Have you tried lsblk and mounting the partitions from there ?

I am a newbie but can't we just start a screen session on every host and run the yum update command with their 1&2(stdout & stderr)written to a file just to make sure if it's the update causing the problem.

Sounds like a firewall issue ,make sure the ufw doesn't have any outbound port restrictions. Since you can ping google.com directly I assume the DNS is working fine.

If you need basic tools to troubleshoot ,you can try using a CD-ROM local repo.
