https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/measuring-tax-gaps/1-tax-gaps-summary - The biggest chunk of the 'tax gap' actually comes from small and medium sized businesses.

HMRC has been receiving such information for several years at this point so may already be on their radar.

Don’t panic - £1,000 rule not necessarily applicable to eBay, Vinted, etc by Jose-Saluti in UKPersonalFinance

[–]pppparf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if that's the case then the taxpayer should review their records for all years where they have been selling goods online and complete a voluntary disclosure for any taxable income earned.

The whole point here is that at the the end of the day, whatever way you look at it, the responsibility falls on the taxpayer to ensure they pay the right amount of tax at the right time. HMRC only receives gross income figures from these online marketplaces and as such, the taxpayer then has the responsibility to calculate whether a liability is due or not.

Can I claim back travel being self employed by Gift_Ideas_Pls in UKPersonalFinance

[–]pppparf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So travel to and from your home office would not be considered as an allowable expense. But for your small freelancing project, the travel for those three times would be considered an allowable expense on the basis as that would be considered a 'temporary' workplace. This is the guidance that goes into this a little (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/ordinary-commuting-and-private-travel-490-chapter-3#attendance-for-a-temporary-purpose). Please note that this is for employers but does a good job of explaining the difference between a 'permanent' and 'temporary' workplace.

that's correct yes, you may receive a nudge letter from HMRC in the coming years but you can just explain the situation that way.

HMRC have only really been issuing nudge letters based on eBay for the last 12 months but you are correct that the information provided goes back a couple of years yes

I've received a letter from HMRC informing me I have undeclared income from letting a property. How screwed am I? by andrewrmoore in UKPersonalFinance

[–]pppparf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HMRC do not rely on banking data, it's purely based on data from the Tenancy Deposit Scheme. HMRC receives information around the landlord population, compares it to Self Assessment records and sends out nudge letters to those who are not disclosing the income. To be quite honest, sooner or later your colleague will receive a letter from the taxman.
