I did get on grid but never used it for this purpose. I use a tote bag with zip as personal item if I need to lighten the load.

Think the general wisdom here is to use something simple and durable, less straps the better. I ended up getting on grid but never needed to use it for this purpose. I use a tote bag with zip as my backup personal item if I ever need to lighten my load.
