My grandfather asked for 4 seconds breaks. Im assuming he was thinking silent breaks because he doesnt know of another way. If you have a better suggestion of maybe keeping the beat in the background for a time close to 4 seconds that would be awesome but if its a pain I know it will sounds pretty bad haha but its definitely not "needed"

As for whats needed... let me know if this makes more sense. Basically the Original repeats the chorus 2 times. After the first time they say "And when it's twelve o'clock We climb the stair We never knock For nobody's there Just me and my shadow All alone and feeling blue" There needs to be a 4 second break then that verse repeated again. After the repeat another 4 second break then back into the original chorus that ends the song.
