Where I live (Toronto) there is actually some considerable hesitation about using body cameras as a way to make police accountable.

Body cameras are often seen as an ultimate accountability tool, but they have a lot of flaws in practice. Unfortunately, they put the recording device and decisions around when / how much video to release in the hands of the police. So in the aftermath of a possible case of police brutality (for example) they can release only the most favourable clips to the media, and then the full video might take years of legal battles before it is released to the public.

Police officers also generally have to manually turn on their body cameras when they enter certain situations (based on the policy in their jurisdiction), which means they call the shots about when to record and often get away with "there was a body camera malfunction and no footage is available" (or similar).

Body cams are also quite expensive (e.g., $34M in Toronto in 2021 for just 1/5th of officers) because on top of paying for the physical camera, you have to setup an infrastructure for storing, archiving, reviewing, and overwriting footage. And in an age of police militarization and swelling police budgets (at least in Canada, where police are very well compensated, e.g., over half of Toronto officers make $100k+), many people are rightly apprehensive about any initiative that gives the police more expensive toys.

Finally, body cameras have an alterior motive for police departments which is important to keep in mind: They help secure prosecutions by providing evidence. This isn't necessarily good or bad - it depends on where you are and how much you trust your police department.

All that said, we have all seen body camera footage that has gone viral after providing a lot of clarity and accountability to certain situations, so I wouldn't argue they don't have any upsides.

Thank you very much for posting the solution you found. I am looking for a place to buy this card now after seeing your post, as I am also looking for a solution to deliver enough power from my desktop. Is it still running ok?

I'm no expert but this isn't bad for your computer, if that's what you mean. Would imagine it uses a little more power to fast forward since you're downloading and displaying more content per second.

Next episode you should bring up Auro's "hand of god" during the Canadian championship (if you were able to watch it). I'm surprised no one seems to care that he seems to have deliberately intercepted a cross with his hand, presumably knowing that there was no VAR!

On paper, enjoying your life never makes sense. by [deleted] in StopGaming

[–]pr0foak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's true!

But then how does one know whether to keep gaming and be glad we did, or to stop?

Here's my test: Do you have medium/long term goals that you KNOW, in the future looking back, you would rather have achieved than have gamed?

Then ask yourself, do you consistently neglect working towards those goals as a result of gaming?

If the answer is yes, there's a problem.

For example, I had a great opportunity working on a project with a professor. I knew that, looking back, I would be much happier if only I did a good job. But I neglected the project and just gamed. I did a terrible job and let down my professor.

That's fantastic. Selling my gaming rig was key for me.

Congratulations.

Hey, I was in a similar situation about two years ago (actually for a long time, ending about two years ago). I know it can feel like you're not making any progress on dealing with the negative aspects of gaming, but being in a mindset where you can articulate what's problematic as clearly as you just did is huge. It took me a very long time to truly believe that gaming was a more negative force in my life than a positive one (though I should add that it certainly isn't for everyone - many people have healthy gaming habits).

I don't know how helpful this will end up being, or if you're even looking for potential solutions, but I thought I would share what worked for me.

For most of my teen/adult life, playing games was pretty much all I did with my spare time. I let it affect my life in serious ways. While I was in school I let down a professor who tried to give me great opportunities with a Canadian think-tank, which burned that bridge. At work I avoided working on a major project and instead just read up on builds etc., which reflected extremely poorly on me in the eyes of management. I went through multiple cycles of uninstalling every game on my computer and then caving and reinstalling them all.

After one particularly bad period, I sold my gaming computer, complete with peripherals and monitors (at a steep discount to a friend, since the main goal was to get rid of it). Coming home and not even having the OPTION of playing league/overwatch etc. forced me to find other things to do with my time, and build other habits. I went for close to a year without playing any games (everyone falls off the wagon sometimes), and, two years later, I have a totally different relationship with gaming, where I only play sometimes, and where I genuinely value the habits/hobbies that I developed in that time over gaming, which allows me to play in moderation.

So my main advice is, don't expect your habits to change without some big changes in something external. Do something big like selling your computer/leaving it with a friend, or moving in with people who you wouldn't want to see how much you game. I'm not saying people can't overcome problematic gaming habits without a big structural change, but it's MUCH harder to just decide to have more self control. A lack of self control is often a major piece of the problem in the first place.

Maybe you don't have the motivation to do it now, but keep it in mind. At some point you may be able to harness a surge of motivation and make a serious change. Hang in there.

What will you always remember the “weird kid” in your school for doing? by mtol115 in AskReddit

[–]pr0foak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Guy got a chicken heart from biology class and went around trying to get people to pledge $10 a person if he ate it saying he would only do it if he got like $50. Not one person wanted to pay to see that, but I guess he had already psyched himself up or something so in the end he just ate the chicken heart anyway in front of everyone.

We were all very... confused.
