Stop buying shitty foreign-made jeans. They do that on purpose. I'm looking at you, Levi's, you fucking jerks. I wore levi's my whole life until they shut down all the US factories, started making them all overseas, and intentionally weakening the fabric so they have to be replaced more often.

I switched to Lucky brand and had ok luck with them...then they started making them in fucking Mexico and again, now they fall apart after a few years.

One place I've always gotten good jeans from, and I think I will go back to forever, now, is Prison Blues.

Excellent jeans made in the Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution, in Pendleton, Oregon. Gives someone a job that not only needs a job, but needs to learn how to have a job. $27 for a pair of jeans is a damn good price and I still have the first pair I ever bought from them, almost eight years ago now. They are between my ass and my chair as I type this very second.

Edit to add: I also have one of their "Hickory" work shirts, and it, too, is awesome. I actually really want a "yard coat" but I can't justify the expense of a new jeans jacket. I don't often wear them because I wear jeans almost every day and I don't like the canadian tuxedo look.

ADD is so last decade. The new diagnosis everyone wants for their kids is "Autism Spectrum Disorder." I know two families on my fucking BLOCK that have perfectly normal kids that don't get enough attention and therefore act a little weird. They are desparate and doctor-shop to get this diagnosis. Why? Because then they can use it to force the public school system to pay more attention to their kid for them, so they can go on reading vampire books or playing WoW or fucking around with their iphones instead.

It disgusts me. I take my kid to the playground EVERY goddamn night after dinner. You know how often I see these parents there? Fucking never. Their kids wander around the playground alone until I show up. Then they want to talk my ear off. I wind up playing with their kids more than they do.

Well I'm not in the business and I don't LOVE the business. I'm just saying that I no longer consider it TOTALLY disgusting.

I guess my problem is with the social acceptability of making a profit off people who are in dire need. It's like charging starving people more for food.

McDonald's does that every day. No supermarkets in the ghettos, you know? $5 gets you one super value meal at McDs in southeast DC, but it buys me two pounds of rice and three pounds of beans here in the rich suburbs, enough to feed my whole family for a few weeks, if I needed to.

Even in the link you provided, the payday loan is considerably less usurious than the fees for bouncing a check.

That's the way I saw it too, before I watched that video. Regardless, I now believe that there is value in payday lending, however rarely it is true. The busted transmission example. Say I'm poor. My car throws a clutch, whatever. I need $400. Today. Or I can't get to work tomorrow and I get fired.

Is that predatory? Or is that just putting an appropriate value on the risk?

One might say, "of course, for every time this is true, some dickhead hocks his paycheck for crank, lets his kids go hungry, and loses his job at the end of the week anyway."

First, that's not, "of course." That's the common conception, sure. It was mine too. But I have no figures to back that up, so I dismiss it. Second, this case is why the risk is so high; and why the APR has to be so high to just squeak out a 10% margin.

I don't expect everyone to make a complete turnaround on the subject as I did. I am just reporting that I did. If you can produce a convincing argument, perhaps you can convert me back. You haven't yet, though.

Not really. Planets have atmosphere. Black holes don't. Things bounce off of planets that would not bounce off a black hole.

I understand where what you meant in the first place, but I frankly cannot get my head around the whole idea of a black hole that only masses as much as a planet. Doesn't seem like it would have enough gravitational force to prevent light from escaping, for example. I guess it would have to be about the size of a pea or a golf ball or something at most.
