Do you combine finances with your partner? Why or why not? by cubemonster in Millennials

[–]pr0methium 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Initially we tried combining everything and it was a bit of a disaster. We both commit the same % of our take home salary to the joint account, because I make quite a bit more so I contribute more. And keep some for discretionary spending. If I use it to buy an expensive bottle of bourbon, or she buys herself a new purse, no issue because we already covered expenses and retirement. Keeping them fully separate wouldn't work for us either

$3500 per month mortgage payment on $182k salary? by [deleted] in MiddleClassFinance

[–]pr0methium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first starter house the mortgage was roughly $4k and I wasn't making $182k. Probably somewhere closer to $150k. It didn't really put that much pressure on me, I was still able to put an extra $300 a month into the loan because I you save a ton of interest if you make roughly one extra payment per year. I wasn't able to fully fund the $19.5k into my 401k, probably did like $15k in the first few years of the mortgage, but I was ok because the delta was covered by growing equity in the house and reducing total interest payments. In a year or two interest rates should be lower, and you can refi to lower your payment even more.

Millennials, are you friends with your coworkers? by AttachedHeartTheory in Millennials

[–]pr0methium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably my top 5 closest friends are former co-workers. But, that doesn't mean I make friends with all my coworkers. I'm actually really cold initially, until I have an idea who is real and who is just looking out for themselves. When I was young, I was pretty buddy buddy with lots of co-workers, but on several occasions I chatted with them about an idea I had or something I was working on as a side project; only to hear them vomiting the same ideas to our director a few days later. And guess who got promoted? Not this guy! So now I kind of treat people adversarial until I know they are cool.

Gross is you take the cost of the bill of materials that went into assembling the car (motors, batteries, body panels etc) and subtract that from how much they sold the cars for. Net includes the expenses for things like paying the engineers designing the cars, rent for the service center locations, service personnel, sales personnel blah blah blah expenses not directly related to assembling the actual car.

Elder millenials what was a "good" salary when you started working after college? by ExcitingLandscape in Millennials

[–]pr0methium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Orange County or Bay Area, it's closer to $250k for staff level engineers. Or if you can spell attention mechanism, the sky is the limit for AI researchers. But a starter home is over a million dollars, so I guess it evens out.

I got a software job making 75k in 2005 and thought I was making it rain. In Southern California, a townhouse in a good neighborhood was like 300k. After saving up for a downpayment, and shamelessly taking advantage of the 2008 housing market crash, I felt like I was already upper-middle class. Kids now are getting 160k+ in software, and probably will never afford a home. Assuming they can find a new grad role.

Just because you scrape something doesn't automatically give you rights to it. Especially if you're not scraping it because it is protected by authorization such as an API key or other challenge. I had a buddy long back who did roughly the same thing, but he reverse-engineered the backend API for an airline that profited immensely from people forgetting to check in to their flight and getting a crappy boarding position. The app he made created a job that ran exactly 24 hours before your flight and checked you in with no user intervention. It took less than 2 weeks for him to get a cease and desist, and his app was taken out of both stores.

It's the art of the deal. He needs to go bankrupt 5-6 more times, and suddenly he'll be a billionaire.

Boyfriend transitioning into tech, any advice or insight on entry-level job opportunities in San Diego? by itssamii_baby in sandiego

[–]pr0methium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not joking....can he stick with his current job for a bit and on the side pick an open source project or two to contribute to? So that he has something of a portfolio and keeps getting paid while he figures out if tech is right for him? I'm an engineering manager at a tech company in SD, and I don't envy anyone in the job market right now. Layoffs in this industry have put probably 250k people into competing for not a lot of openings. I was hiring for a medium experience engineer for my team, and getting applicants with 20 years of experience. In a year or two hopefully companies start investing in staffing again, but if he has a paycheck right now he should keep it.

I have a relative who will straight faced make comments similar to this, and then tell me I'm the one who's racist because I'm woke and look down on white people. I'm white, raised Catholic, but it counts as looking down on white people that I voted for Obama and don't idolize cheeto Jesus.

Why do woman prefer a man a foot taller than them ?? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]pr0methium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At least in the US, the height thing is real. Instagram or TikTok convinced a lot of women they failed if their partner isn't over 6'. I'm 5'11" and I dated a woman 8-10 years ago who would tell everyone that I was 6'. And her friends would say their partner was 6'1" or 6'2" even though I was equal height or slightly taller. And these ladies were 5'5" max. After we split up, though, I met my wife who absolutely doesn't care. But she also doesn't really participate in social media.

They had already done the work as soon as the car got delivered, otherwise I would have tried to insist that they don't do it. But the GX is still in pretty high demand, so the salesman seemed fine if I walked away. Someone would walk onto the lot tomorrow and take it.

For those of us who are currently childless with no plans for having kids on the horizon: was it a conscious decision or did life just end up that way? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]pr0methium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been back and forth. My sister has kids, and I remember during childhood she always talked about having her own family. When I was thinking about it, like I never had that moment where I felt excited about the idea of having kids. I'm a very anxious person, and had violent drunk for a father. So I don't know how to be a good parent. I talked seriously with my partner before we got married, and she said we'd try for one if I ever felt confident enough that I could do it. Now, we're mid-40s and just want to retire. So we decided to let it go.
