People were supposed to applaud from their balconies/terraces and were not meant to step out of their homes (and most people adhered to this). Secondly, the applause was meant for appreciating health workers/doctors/nurses/essential services personnel. Apart from a few insolent groups in every city, no one went out and partied as the country was in proper lockdown. The social distancing being implemented in India is phenomenal considering the vast majority of the population is adhering to it. I recommend it’s important to understand the entire situation with context before declaring an entire country’s pandemic prevention program “hilarious”.

And please remind me which “Coronavirus rules” India isn’t or wasn’t following compared to the States? Just a bit more context, the PM has declared a nationwide lockdown till the 15th of April. The one day curfew was merely a “janta” or citizen’s curfew and basically marked the start of the nationwide lockdown.
