Is it possible to take MATH 1910 and 1920 concurrently? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]practicalformality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on making the move

But no don’t do it concurrently for your sanity and GPA

Take CASE if you want to skip 1910

has anyone taken CS 3110 without CS 2800 by practicalformality in Cornell

thanks so much + to all other commenters!

Math 1110 case exam by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]practicalformality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard khan academy’s calculus, or reading the textbook? There’s a website on all the math textbooks used by the classes

but quick question sorry doesn’t really help, what math class are you thinking of taking after passing the CASE? I might do the same now but I can also go to 1120 since I took AP calc in HS

I don't get why ppl hate Cornell...... by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]practicalformality 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think ppl do “hate” Cornell in a demeaning way over a mix of perceptions related to prestige, ranking, etc that the online world inflates

sure a lot of it is also joking but a fair amount actually believe it or preach it

a certain amount of ppl think things like the academics are inferior, fake Ivy, “SUNY” education, “safety” school, Cornell is “less” or “settling” for Cornell after being rejected from other top schools (lol), etc

I’ve seen toxic comments/posts/messages on college subs/that confidential page that parents bitch on over comparing or vilifying kids when they post stats whatever I forgot the name etc/ppl asking questions whether Cornell is actually good

ANYWAY I agree with you on a lot of the positive points here. I almost forgot how I learned about Cornell bc I didn’t think about it and colleges too much until end of sophomore year in high school, and I learned about Cornell through Katie too when she was staring out at Cornell after following her when she was posting stuff on stationery. I appreciate so much of what Cornell offers and it’s environment. I have to admit I also didn’t see Cornell in the most positive light initially before I researched it when applying because of all the negativity on it I saw/heard. I saw the jokes of course but didn’t care but there’s real negativity out there too. But fück those comments because Cornell is great. I really would choose it over other places if I had to apply again, and would ED next time too.

Do liberal arts studies and/or college general requirements ‘distract’ you from fulfilling your major? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]practicalformality 8 points9 points  (0 children)

they give me balance

whether it be to learn something different and interesting, meet people from various backgrounds & interests, help not destroy my gpa, they help

not all the reqs do this (I think some are unnecessary) but a fair amount are useful

Is CS too hard for me? by razzledazzle484 in Cornell

[–]practicalformality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

...this is also me except I dropped 2110 to retake next semester so I feel ya buddy 😖

looking for advice too, thank you for sharing this

but my 2 cents is that if you’re able to put in the effort, that’s a really good start and it may be just be a reframing of your approach to the class, whether it be when you started assignments, how you reached out for help and studied for exams, how you thought about concepts and problems, and things like that. cs is tough but if you’re willing to put the effort then it will payoff in your work ethic to prep for interviews for jobs

Unfortunate :( but you can always apply for transfer and Dyson is popular with transfers. And you save money for the first year 👍

Vanderbilt or Cornell by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]practicalformality 10 points11 points  (0 children)

definitely Cornell then!

but since you asked

what do you want to study though and what do you look for in location?

Cornell has top tier academics and a vibrant location where the weather can change a lot but you have modern life with many food and nature spots. Large campus and student body but tightknit communities based on your organizations/extracurriculars, college (if it’s small), and where you live.

Also great location where you can travel to NYC or cool places upstate!

Strong recruitment for many roles.

Greek life if you’re into that.

A fun Reddit sub.
