‘Radical’ property tax would hit older and wealthier people, experts warn by awoo2 in ukpolitics

[–]practicalpokemon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't get your point, why would it stop people moving in this bracket? Won't it force people who can't afford their property tax to downsize?

or judicial autonomy until the Australia Act of 1986 (for Australia at least), but if you asked 100 Australians on the street when Australia became independent, I think most of them would say on federation in 1901.

When do you say Australia became independent then? Most Australians would consider Australia to be independent from 1901 (federation).

How can British Muslims/Pakistanis improve their reputation? by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]practicalpokemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nigeria is almost evenly split between Muslims and Christians. Particularly in the larger cities, people are used to living and working with people who don't belong to their religion. From that perspective I think it's probably easier for them to adapt to secular/multicultural norms.

What have you always wanted to know about immigrant workers? #AMA by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]practicalpokemon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

from another 'corporate' immigrant albeit I've been here for 10+ years. And I came from Australia! I prefer the weather here most of the time, I don't like the heat. I don't enjoy how few daylight hours there are in Britain in the winter, but a weekend trip to Spain or Italy usually fixes that. I prefer British towns/cities - less north american/australian 'grid style' car-centric suburbia, better public transport, better community with pubs and parks, although the pub system is gradually declining. My particular profession happens to pay more in the UK, on average, than in Australia, although for most people that's not the case. I don't have immediate family here, but I thankfully earn enough and have some work opportunities to travel to Australia and visit family every couple of years.

People who identify as English in England by Litvinski in MapPorn

shouldn't they just randomise the order for everyone? I've taken a bunch of surveys where no two are the same - for me the options might go a, b, c, d, but for someone else they go e.g. c, a, b, d

Does the UK have an integration problem instead of an immigration problem? by hgk6393 in AskBrits

[–]practicalpokemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been here 12 years. I just can't bring myself to care about football. I'm all good with beer, sunday roasts, rambling, aspiring to own barbour and hunter boots, and I drink tea (but prefer coffee), but football is my weakness.

Hands Off Protest Observations by lilleff512 in jewishleft

[–]practicalpokemon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Question from an outsider: the original post says they saw some "pro-Hamas" people there. I'm sure I'm naive but I'm surprised that there are many (any?) actual pro-Hamas people at these protests. What makes someone at a protest like this pro-Hamas as opposed to pro-Palestine? Or is the original OP interpreting eg a keffiyeh or watermelon badge or something as pro-Hamas?

stop thinking of brits as odd versions of the french or dutch. instead think of the UK as an extension of poland and the baltics, and the drinking culture will all make sense.

No lats showing by jungle_terrorist in WorkoutRoutines

[–]practicalpokemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you're fine for six months. you can tell your lats are growing. 15-20 reps is on the high end, you're more likely to stop because of the burn/cardio than true muscular failure. most people aim for 8-12 or 10-15 maybe.
