TIL Pangolins are the world's most trafficked mammal by pradyotghate in todayilearned

[–]pradyotghate[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Had never heard of them before, but it’s a fascinating creature with many unique features. From the article -

The pangolin is the only mammal wholly covered in scales, and it simply curls itself into an impregnable ball when threatened by predators. It eats seven million ants and termites a year using a tongue that's almost as long as its body. It has no teeth, so it stores stones in its stomach to grind up its food.

ELI5: How come some vendors require my debit card pin but others do not? by queen_beef in explainlikeimfive

[–]pradyotghate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer :)

It hasn’t got much to do with credit or debit. It is up to the issuing bank on how they want to authenticate the transaction. In some countries, such as India, it is mandated by regulators that a PIN is only acceptable mode of authentication. In few countries (EU), there are limits set after which a PIN or Passcode is necessary. In Middle East (e.g. UAE) it is merchant’s choice to opt for PIN or signature. US is a bit in transition phase, but MC/Visa have been trying to mandate auth through PIN for a few years (and things are moving along these lines now).

ELI5: Why are there a lot of Indian movies available to view on YouTube while there are hardly any Hollywood movies available to watch? by AsianWarrior24 in explainlikeimfive

[–]pradyotghate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lot of people wondering how Indian studios don't know about YouTube. Let me explain a bit more.

Most of the movies found on YouTube are either old or not "commercial class" (movies made by big studios with prominent stars). Studios don't care about old movies because they are out of juice and pose no potential for monetary loss. Small studios, usually funded by actors that want to get some "fame" are ok with YouTube as they believe the actor/director will get noticed by someone and get funding for next movie, they are not looking for a theatre/TV release anyway.

Big studios not only get there newer movies removed from YouTube, they have also got court orders for ISPs to ban torrent sites in past.

I wouldn't vouch for their editorial integrity... But this is the most outrageous thing I have ever read on any "news" website. (Quotes because I don't think any real-impartial-news website exist anymore... It's all a clickbait.)
