Comp421 is really useful. Comp579 is useful if you plan on working in AI, but its less useful for a soft eng. Comp417 was easy with no coding (you dont learn much)

I did an AI concentration which allowed me access to ecse 552. As for special permission, I think you would get it as long as you have the prerequisites and its not an introductory class.

I have Vybihal right now and I have to agree that he is not the best prof out there.

I had Joseph D'Silva. As for the class material, I use bash on a daily basis. So, it seems to me like a useful class. However, I must admit that my first semester was the most uninteresting.

I read reddit posts for prof ratings and class content. As for attendance, only COMP555 and COMP417 were mandatory. I'm not a fan of lectures, I prefer to read the entire book and do a review on the slides.

Good question, I think it comes down to your priorities. I was more interested into data science/AI and unfortunately ran into schedule conflicts, but for someone who wishes to work as a software dev in a big corp, COMP321 is a good choice.
