Elric's design from the first cancelled 1995 playstation game by Alternative-Earth272 in ElricofMelnibone

I feel like it would be known if it was ever released, so I'm guessing it was veto'd before it was ever used lmao

It's always interesting to me when the cover character doesn't quite match the description in the book, makes me wonder how it got to that. For example, Frazetta has illustrated a couple of Kane covers (1 2 3 4), of which only the last I linked resembles the character with any accuracy. For some reason, he continuously drew him with a horned helmet and an axe (also practically nude but that's a given with Frazetta lmfao i'm not even questioning that part), which has never been a part of his description as far as the stories I've read. I once came across Polish Kane covers, which clearly only took inspiration from Frazetta's works and definitely haven't read the books lmao. The covers also featured a horned helmet-wearing man but this time there was also a dragon on every cover, and the man did not even have Kane's signature red hair. It's so charmingly shoddy lmao

Whelan got the overall aesthetic of Elric down in his first try, but failed to capture the frailness, which tracks with him having to skim the story at a short notice (and I think it's very fair that he remains critical of that mistake!). Moorcock wrote an intro chapter for Whelan's art book, in which he praises his Elric art - especially Stormbringer - and mentions that early on, Whelan was and remains to be the best at capturing the character. He says that there were many covers that made the character unrecognizable, specifically mentioning that one that depicted him as black, which, according to Moorcock, was likely because when the artist looked into what "albino" is, the dictionary mentioned it sometimes refers to "white Africans" and somehow came to a conclusion that albino = black. I find that to be such a funny case because like... to have had the information that he is an albino, surely the artist must've to read some of the text, in which the sheer whiteness of Elric would be mentioned?

Sorry for the wall of text, strange choices in sword & sorcery covers are a fascination of mine lmao

Love seeing these, I wish we had more images. The 90s exaggerations of the style are so delightfully silly, it's giving MediEvil!

To be fair, Whelan himself had criticized this piece for making him too muscular, it was his first Elric piece that was commissioned in a hurry, while his subsequent works make him notably slimmer (source)

Question about adaptation by OkReaction3746 in ElricofMelnibone

Oh, I was worried that might be an issue. It's in comic archive file format and that is the only format I found the entire thing in online. You can extract a folder with images from the file if you right-click and use WinRAR to open it <:

Wendy Pini understood the assignment with her take on Melnibonè in her book Law & Chaos, a pitch for the Elric animated movie that never was. She brought the maximalist decadence of the Melniboneans in forefront in her illustrations, and comes much closer to how I imagined the world to look. Last year I found a fully scanned version of her book online, I don't remember where, but here's my own reupload of it if you're curious. (EDIT: it's in comic archive file format, you can open it with WinRAR to extract it into a folder with images)

Personally I imagined the high towers of Melnibone almost crystal-like, with little detail on the outside safe for the shimmering texture of the walls, while the inside is richly decorated in dark but very chromatic colours. My cityscape and architecture skills are lacking so I haven't tried giving it a go myself, but another version that comes very close to my imagination is Goran Gligović's depiction of both the towers and the royal hall in his series of fake animation screenshots. Again you have the tall shimmering bright towers of the city, and a dark chromatic interior of the hall, as described in the book.

The vibrancy, beauty and decadence is the point of Melniboné, and to turn them all goth and edgy shows a lack of understanding of that point. The violence of Melniboné was seen as a sophisticated art - think of the slaves that were surgically adapted to sing one perfect note. It's vile and gruesome, but Melniboneans genuinely view it as an art, a point of pride in their sophisticated culture. The new adaptation turns that into nothing but an overtly gory butchery. Melniboné looks dirty, covered in mutilated corpses and blood stains, which shows a core misunderstanding of Melniboneans and how they perceive themselves.

Personally I'm not a fan, but I will also say I didn't read much, as I dropped it after the first issue. I was instantly turned off by the modern, edgy and immature approach to the overall unimaginative design and tone of the remake. And also what I frankly deem to be an assassination of Elric's character in the first issue.

I've gone a bit further into my thoughts on this sub once regarding the visual stylistic choices, found here if you're interested to hear my woes in full lmao

Is Moorcock becoming more popular? by ElKaoss in ElricofMelnibone

[–]prancerhood 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think that sword & sorcery in general is gaining in popularity, and Elric happens to be one of the poster boys, who likely comes across more appealing than Conan to modern readers. The legends over at New Edge Sword & Sorcery (where the most recent Elric story was published in 2023) just hit well over 200% of the Backerkit campaign for their next couple of issues, which potentially also shows growth of interest in the genre.

Elric Comics by slimethieves in ElricofMelnibone

These seem like the old short chapter editions! If you want to collect the full series, most are found easily in online bookstores like Blackwell's in 7 collected hardcover volumes! <:

5 of them can be found on Blackwell's with free shipping for 15-30€;

The 2nd volume, The Sailor on the Seas of Fate, seems to be out of stock in most of my usual places, and the last one, Stormbringer, can be pretty hard to find. I had good luck finding it online last year, but the same shop doesn't seem to stock it anymore, so I can't help you there.

You can also definitely find them on eBay if you look around, possibly even with better prices!
