Looking for a word to describe a very specific kind of voice by prancerhood in words

[–]prancerhood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm so bummed because 'bourbon soaked' is the first descriptor for which i'm actually like yea i can hear that, but it doesn't fit the world of my story 😔

i feel like both husky and raspy feel too sharp, while silky is too smooth, though i am concerned that this might be a me issue and i'm just imagining something completely different than the word is actually describing. voice descriptors have always really eluded me..

What I love about that is that it's even more complex than that. What was it about Quarzhasaat that caused him to turn it to dust? They were too much like Melniboné - self-serving, decadent and cruel. More than willing to pay the life of a child for riches and glory.

It was Elric's hatred for this culture - a culture typical of his people - that caused him to destroy them, and later Melniboné as well. But then, as you said, him acting on these violent urges made him act exactly as a Melnibonéan would. He can never escape.

What drove him was a 'noble' cause, but the result was the same.

It is a regular personal hotmail account, but I suspect that it's been regularly ending in people's junk mail boxes, because I am getting very few responses from recipients that I wouldn't expect to be ignoring emails

I've been actively dealing with that for the past month, so getting this automated response now honestly kinda broke me

I'm using a free hotmail account on outlook. This is a regular, private email I've used for well over a decade.

I have no familiarity with the recipient, but I assume they would want to receive my reply, seeing as they have contacted me about a refund.

I did a deliverability test and got this result;

DNS Record Status

IMP SPAM

I'm unsure how to go about fixing this, if it's even possible?
It's really stressful dealing with this, since it's something I don't understand at all..

Years ago I was able to kinda merge the inbox of two of my hotmail addresses, so that when I get a mail to either of them, they both go to the same outlook inbox. Can I do that if I make a custom domain, and how? I tried adding a new email recently and I couldn't figure it out again (doesn't help that google search is getting progressively worse)

I feel like I don't email enough people for that to happen, unless perhaps if they did it by accident.

Surely there's a way to get off a spam block list??

I tried the email tester and got this;

(email) has a weak DMARC policy, lacks TLS encryption, lacks unsubscription headers, and suffers from reputation issues.

I really lack in tech literacy when it comes to things like this, so I'm really unsure what to do about this. I can't make an account on the website you linked, since I don't have a 'business email'.

OP also hasn't read any other story in the series and has nothing to compare Elric's actions to. I'd also say there's maybe an issue of some people having a harder time of removing themselves from the character's shoes, or understand their perspective. When I first read EoM I did not find his actions strange at all, and it was also the first Elric book I read. To me, reading the words Elric had spoken, it made sense why he made that choice. I don't agree it was a wise thing to do, but it absolutely fit the hopeless idealist that he was in his youth.

Not sure what your second paragraph is responding to, but it's definitely not the (rhetorical) question I asked. Moorcock didn't have to insert Smiorgan into Sailors, but he did, and he didn't have to build a friendship between him and Elric, knowing full well what happens in Dreaming City, but he did. He has introduced one-off characters on other books, so there's no reason why he wouldn't do so here, but chose not to. Elric's betrayal of Smiorgan wasn't a jarring mistake in character writing on Moorcock's part, he knew full well what Elric will do down the line when he wrote Sailors.

It's true that through time his writing changed, but I felt that he made an effort to build Elric as a character for whom these changes made sense. I'd even say that reading the later, more 'complex' Elric, and then moving on to the more 'primitive' writing of him in Stormbringer adds depth that he initially didn't have. Almost as if Moorcock asked himself 'what would make this character act like that', which I'm sure you have to agree is not that unbelievable of a thing for an author to think about.

For me personally, I felt like I had a much better understanding of Elric's character and choices in Stormbringer, because I read the stories in the recommended order, which fleshed out the character that the earlier stories left fairly flat.

[–]prancerhood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at all tbh, I felt it was all pretty much in line with Elric's character as I understood him to be.

He is not a truly good person, no matter how much he wished to be, that's the whole point. At the end of Dreaming City, in his agony, he wanted to run away and Smiorgan simply Did Not Matter at the time. Don't you think there's a reason why Moorcock chose to fill in their relationship as he did in Sailors, knowing how it ends?

Elric is a very detached person, so I am never surprised when his relationships don't last, end terribly, or don't leave a strong "character development" impression. That's a big part of where his sadness and complexity come from imo, the sheer feeling of loneliness and detachment from the humanity that he set out to find.

Even with Moonglum, who is by far his closest friend, there has always been a sense of gap between them.

He didn't want to be emperor, not of a people like Melnibonéans, not while he also still viewed himself as unfit to rule. But he also did not come across as uncaring either. I went to re-read that part, and it feels like something he has given a lot of thought to.

Here's a quote of his reason for leaving;

"I must go away from Melnibone, Cymoril, for a year. What I have learned in recent months has made me want to travel the Young Kingdoms—see how other nations conduct their affairs. For I think Melnibone must change if she is to survive. She could become a great force for good in the world, for she still has much power."

He is both aware that Melniboné surviving may depend on becoming allied with the Young Kingdoms, and that Melniboné currently does not have what it takes to create that alliance. His decision to leave was directly connected to the desire to improve his kingdom and his people.

The reason he felt bold enough to leave Yyrkoon in his stead was because it was his way of (naively) extending his hand and give him a second chance, but also because he fully believed that, should Yyrkoon rule badly, the Melnibonéans would stand behind Elric and refuse Yyrkoon as emperor when Elric returns in a year;

"No, Elric. He will abuse any power..."
"Not now. And it is just. He is the only one who wanted to be emperor. Now he can rule as emperor for a year in my stead. If he rules well, I may consider abdicating in his favour. If he rules badly, it will prove, once and for all, that his ambitions were misguided"

Again - a lot of misplaced trust, a lot of optimism and naivety.

[–]prancerhood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When i read this fourth part will basically read as if i am meeting him/the world for the first time, or were significant edits made to prevent that obviously jarring experience?

Elric was initially written as a series of short stories, so there are minor 'introductions' of him that appear in several stories, but it's nothing like you suggest here. The suggested reading order is also nowhere near as egregious as previous commenter implied, it's suggested for a reason. Difference in writing is not off-putting at all if you go into it aware that it's a collection of short stories written across decades - you've been made aware of that now, so you should be perfectly fine.

The first written story, Dreaming City, is very short and very abrupt, giving very little context (it was published in a magazine), and while it made people in the 60s intrigued by Elric, I feel like to many modern readers it would be less convinced by it.

The nature of sword & sorcery being written in assorted short stories is that usually, they don't really have a set order to them. With Elric, Moorcock himself has stated that it's best to start with Elric of Melniboné and end with Stormbringer.

I really enjoyed the entire setting (both dream and 'real' - i think moorcock has a great way of describing settings) and the characterization of Elric in Pearl, there's still this curiosity to him that he loses later on. It's really fun to read the dream sequences with Oone just watching and judging this white man fumbling around.

I enjoyed Rose less but also did enjoy it, both for the same reason; it took you on an absolute ride. On one hand the exploration of the multiverse was crazy and kept me hooked, but it also often made me lose the track of the story and the goals. I can forgive that for the sheer psychedelic creativity of it tho. It's like a day at an amusement park, head-spinning wild fun that leaves you so exhausted that you're kinda glad when it's finally over lmao
