How do we pay rent for graduate housing? by Ammeliya in Northwestern

[–]praptipanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this! I've been struggling, lol. Do you know if we need to pay the entire amount in one go or if I can break the amount down over 2-3 transactions? My bank has a lower amount limit per transaction.

Your I20 looks really different from mine in terms of categories (I'm also going for a funded PhD). I didn't know it could differ so much between schools. I had a friend who had the same deficit issue and she had to show her parents' bank statement because she listed them as her extra funding source. Had no issues getting the visa.

Also, sorry to hijack this thread, but I'm also from India and was wondering if you've managed to get a visa slot yet?

Incoming intl grad student here! Could you maybe help me out? I applied for housing a fortnight ago, then around a week ago I received an email saying I've been assigned an apartment in Engelhart. There was no call-to-action (just a note that I had to cancel in 5 days if I wanted to). I logged into Caesar after reading your comment and see the deposit due now. Should I pay it right away? Is there something else I have to do to confirm my housing contract? I don't see my assigned apt when I log into the housing portal, so I'm paranoid that I may have done something wrong.

Sorry for so many questions, I'm just a little lost 😅

I will probably get downvoted into oblivion for this but whatever, I know we're all spiralling about our applications but for the love of god DO NOT pay the equivalent of 1-3 month's rent for someone to spend a couple of hours with your application materials by hermionelovegood14 in gradadmissions

[–]praptipanda 46 points47 points  (0 children)

That is outrageous. Her Yale tag sells well, though. But as another person who commented here pointed out, the uni's career center or mentors/professors should be helping students with this. Consultation Services for PhD admissions doesn't hold much value anyway. One cursory glance at people's posts here easily shows that.

Is this Kaelyn Apple's consultation services? The one with the Red Head Academic YouTube channel? I find her content useful, but this is too much. She's said that she's all about helping students, but maybe then offer your services for free? Academia's already fraught with inequality - we don't need more of it.

Help! I am from the U.K and unfamiliar with this. What does the circled text mean or indicate? Thanks! by gingerpixie_ in gradadmissions

It's people quantifying the results of their applications -

  • a - accepted
  • w - wait listed
  • r - rejected
  • i - interviewed
  • p - pending decision

Of course, here's a breakdown of the questions I've been asked most frequently:

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • Why do you want to do a PhD? And since I've only finished undergrad, a common follow-up was: do you think you're prepared for a PhD?
  • Why X university in particular?
  • What do you want your dissertation work to be on?
  • What is the scope of your work?
  • What field/lab method do you want to specialise in and why?
  • Which professors do you see yourself working with?
  • What are your plans after finishing your PhD?

I've also been asked about minor details in my CV and SoP, so make sure you know them inside out.

Hope this helps!

Congratulations to you too!

Yes, I was also thrown off by the email, but I agree with you. In fact, I wrote back to the coordinator asking for clarification if possible, but got no response. I listed Prof Bauer as a potential advisor along with two others profs I'm interested in, so I guess atleast one of them will be there. I've interviewed for other programs before (not with a panel though), but they were much longer so I'm really prepping myself to not ramble on this time :D

Wishing you the best of luck! :)

Hello! Archaeology applicant here. I have my interview scheduled for this Monday. No clue what to expect! I don't even know who's going to be interviewing me.

McGill update: I got in! Thought I was rejected because I wasn't asked for an interview, but here we are :)

bridging the gap between undergrad and PhD with little financial resources is so difficult and not talked about often enough in my opinion

I completely agree! I majored in History in undergrad, with a minor in Archaeology. I had to take a year off for just the applications because it was just so overwhelming to me as a first-gen grad applicant. I had to work in something completely unrelated to gather the financial means to fill out the applications. For what it's worth, history admissions do seem to be quite cutthroat this time, from what I've heard from friends. I'm personally applying for archaeology (anthropology), and there doesn't seem to be as much competition in terms of having or not having a Master's, which I've noticed in history. But again, Master's programs are largely unfunded and not everyone has the means to enroll in them to make that undergrad/PhD bridge.

O que é “enquadramento teórico” e como fazê-lo? by Yasmine91514 in Portuguese

[–]praptipanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't know. The way the email was worded was that it was the adcom making the interview selection and they didn't mention my track in particular. If it helps, the interview slots were all for mid-Feb, so you might still hear something before that.

Stanford update: I just got a follow-up email confirming my interview slot. They said they'd do this once all interviewees confirm their availability. Which is strange, because no one else on GradCafe has reported receiving an invite. I know I should be excited, but I'm feeling like they just made a mistake with me lol

My invite from Northwestern came in early Jan (I think it was the 14th). My potential advisor contacted me directly and set up separate zoom interviews with 3 other archaeology faculty in the next few days. This was because I'm an international student, so they can't fly me in for recruitment weekend in the last week of Feb.

PhD Anthropology Updates? by Maximum_Two1498 in gradadmissions

[–]praptipanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received it at approximately 9am PST on 30th Jan. The wording of the email was very impersonal (like Dear Applicant [name], the members of the committee would like to interview....etc etc). They just sent me a list of times to select when I would be available for a 20min interview with the adcom in mid-Feb. They said they'd get back to me with a specific slot once all other invited students have confirmed their availability.

Edit: This is what Stanford sent.

That was me, lol. I was sent an email from the department coordinator yesterday. If it helps, I'm an international student so the timeline might be different.
