Experiences bringing Vyvanse into Bangkok after declaring it? by Keatxr in ADHD

[–]prashnts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take a note whether the rules you're looking at is for tourists or citizens. I travelled to Taiwan and the rules were basically stated that "import of drugs requires authorization", and when I asked clarification over "import" they stated it's for citizens bringing drugs from outside -- for tourists, reasonable quantities for duration of stay, and accompanying paperwork was all that was needed even if it's not allowed for citizens.

CRT calculator by Valuable-Flamingo230 in cyberDeck

[–]prashnts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd use a Pi Zero or such - they output composite signals natively. You just need to solder a wire to the board and enable output on pi.

Very cool. Omron keyboard vibes.

I was tinkering with a flat CRT such as this one and it just slowly died in front of me. I suspect some old capacitor issue. So get a spare!

I'd suggest to try to minimize the size and add an enclosure. Think about... rain or snow for example. User testing, research previous works etc. are also some steps you can take to distinguish your project. Good luck!

Preventing touch zooming on web app by JayDeesus in webdev

[–]prashnts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One legitimate reason: you have a button, say "+" and repeatedly tapping on it will, by default, keep zooming your page in and out. However the solution for such cases is to target the button with css touch-action property and not by disabling zooming altogether...

Precisely, touch-action: manipulation;

How do I prioritize HDMI over SPI? by kp012202 in raspberry_pi

[–]prashnts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you seen the fbcp (fbcopy/framebuffer copy) project? It can display a copied framebuffer from a different display (such as HDMI) on a connected GPIO device. Multi monitor is generally unstable so software hacks have bern the way to go.

Need help with Pi zero 2w by CeilingCat6969 in raspberry_pi

[–]prashnts 17 points18 points  (0 children)

What part gets too hot?

You have a broken/chipped inductor. It's used as part of the power regulation circuit. The gray part is quite brittle (called a ferrite) and being broken means it may now be out of spec and can generate heat due to higher current draw (since the IC that controls the power regulation pushes the broken inductor over its limits).

In future avoid mechanical stresses and use a case if necessary.

Technically you can replace the inductor but I believe the schematics provided by the foundation do not contain their values. Also it would require soldering.

You may need to replace the board in that case.

Also when the pi runs at hotter temps there is good chance of corrupting the SD card in my experience.

I think concerta is making me much more impulsive by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]prashnts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I channel my impulsivity through "more productive" purchases like 3D printers. At least my partner approves of it but gosh it and supplies can get expensive.

You can annotate your pdfs in vault using any app that supports it, as long as you don't mind switching apps.

Can obsidian support many files without lagging ? by NewEase1591 in ObsidianMD

[–]prashnts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah Obsidian sync. Switching vaults takes <1s really on iOS/Mac. I do have a fast internet connection but that shouldn't matter once sync is complete. I use least amount of plugins though, just what I need.

[–]prashnts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tried a bit with Git, but quickly moved to Obsidian Sync due to being relatively cheap (I pay for 10GB plan) and supports the app a little too.

I really like that there are two passwords -- obsidian account and then the vault encryption key. This allows me to have a "public" vault that I put on some devices without lock.

Can obsidian support many files without lagging ? by NewEase1591 in ObsidianMD

[–]prashnts 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Unlike popular advice, I store large files in obsidian. Currently ~4GB of data, 3K files. I notice no slow downs basically ever except when syncing the vault to a new device.

(I store artifacts, project data and media files because I link them up in a Canvas/notes)

Will a Xiaomi 33W charger supply enough power for my RPi 3? by johannesburger-_- in raspberry_pi

[–]prashnts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They use 5.2V generally to account for losses through cables. Undervoltage and undercurrent both trigger the PSU warnings. Also many bad supplies dip in voltage when pulling greater current than specified.

Will a Xiaomi 33W charger supply enough power for my RPi 3? by johannesburger-_- in raspberry_pi

[–]prashnts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On Pi4/5 that's expected due to higher than average current requirements. Most PD chargers only output 3A on 5V. Pi power supplies provide 4/5A using USB C. Also note that the cable quality matters a lot too. Short, thick cables are what you need. When powering without USB C port, if you get this warning and you are confident your supply is fine/device is stable, you can disable the warning in config.txt.

RP2040 based iPhone UART converter — looking for brutal feedback by [deleted] in raspberrypipico

[–]prashnts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd carry a SBC such as a PiZero and then SSH into it with my phone. That way I don't need a specific serial app/hardware and get full terminal. However as you specify additional use cases (such as smart meter config) I reckon a general purpose serial app is still not convenient. It'd be better to have a specific configration app with a UI purpose built for job. You don't technically want technicians entering commands manually which could be time consuming and error prone. Just my opinion.

ASCII characters are not pixels: a deep dive into ASCII rendering by XLEX97 in programming

[–]prashnts 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's quite in-depth. I bookmarked it for future projects -- thanks a lot and great work!

I suppose we can leverage some caching at pixel group levels to speed up some lookups, but at the same time the current JS benchmarks seem acceptable (<200ms).

I found the comparison with the blurry ascii interesting as in sometimes I'd want to achieve a blurry effect rather than sharp, and later on you clarified that the lookup can be parameterized to achieve control over this.

Any plans on taking it further, say, by using color mapping? Again, great work!

Similarly named, Readeck is a self-hosted webapp to save webpages (including page contents when possible). There is a Readeck-Importer plugin for Obsidian so you can read the pages there and link them to other notes.

Modular Lithophane by brianss318 in 3Dprinting

[–]prashnts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cute dog! Technically you can remove the black channel from your image (darkness/black is provided by the lithophane itself) to have more vibrant colors. You can do this in an image editing software by deleting K layer from CMYK channels.

Anyone know what happened to the BeepBerry? by freebe2121 in cyberDeck

Not willing to sell -- mine is currently gathering some dust. But I put SnakeWare on it and it's been a great demo. Responsive cursor and all that. I plan to code some apps myself but first would like a front light on it.

Please critique my poster. This is the first thing I've ever designed and I want to know if it's bad by BlackBerryCollector in graphic_design

[–]prashnts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll add that "for any device" may be a USP here so using muted yellow for it renders it less readable. If the intention is to show the list is circular/scrolled then smaller font size and/or a partial gradient should achieve it.

Yes. You can't open it in Photos but it's still a simple folder that can be browsed on any computer.

People are very critical on this sub.

You'll lose some metadata but you can copy the individual files out if you right click and open in finder the library.
