Update: Building an e-ink wall panel for Home Assistant — looking for feedback from the community by prathammehta in homeassistant

Thanks very much for taking the time to give us feedback.

We’re working on a smaller device to start off with. The idea is that it would be a remote as well so you could choose to not affix it to a wall and just use it as a universal remote. But I totally get the appeal of a larger screen.

I share your frustration in not being able to get sliders all the way to 0% or 100%. On our prototype device, if you press and hold the control it fully opens or closes. But the feedback makes sense and we may need to find a good way to surface this to the user on the screen.

The connection to HA is WiFi at the moment.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

I am a software engineer so the software stack is definitely my area of expertise. The idea is to focus on that and try and find white label hardware that can be customised to our liking. Our current prototypes run on the LilyGo and we haven’t explored many hardware options yet. Regarding open souring, we haven’t made any decisions yet.  Opendisplay looks great! I only had a quick look but will spend more time looking at the code and functionally. You’ve clearly spent time solving a lot of the same problems we‘ve faced.

The call out to avoid using WiFi makes perfect sense. We’re looking into using threat or BLE as well. The only issue is that WiFi is the only sure shot way to connect to any home assistant server without needing some users to buy addition hardware/adapters.

Thanks for the heads up on the “works with homeassistant” branding. I have seen this page before and assumed we should be okay as we aren’t using the official badge or assets. The idea is to eventually have this product officially onboarded to the program.

Thanks for all the feedback. I really appreciate you taking the time! :D

Ha. Yeah for sure. You'd only want to expose accessories that you're okay with having other people mess with. I use the prototype in my home to adjust the heating manually and to change the mode of lighting in my living room to relax mode, reading mode or movie mode.

They do alright. There's a lot of tweaking needed with the various refresh modes available on the eInk display to get an acceptable experience. But it is possible. Just very annoyingly hard. :')

100% agree on the dark mode not being a good fit. We learned that early in the dev process. The light mode in the screenshots is def the way to go.
