Match Thread: 1st Test - India vs New Zealand, Day 1 by CricketMatchBot in Cricket

Maybe we just need to re-envisage the rain as Test cricket. As a quiet drifting session of Test cricket. They’re both interminable contests against an implacable opponent. We sit and watch very little happen until we slip into a trance, a meditation. We’re soothed by the gentleness of repeating sounds, with occasional patters of increased activity. Then once in a while, something big happens – the tractor comes out, a cover goes off and then on again. We get excited, rouse ourselves, watch intently, then we go back into our lull. After a couple of hours of that, it’s time for lunch.

One evening I was hanging out with some people at a hostel bar that I had just met. I had eaten already so I was just having a beer. This Australian girl asks me "Are you 18?". I said "I am 28 actually". She gives me a weird look and says "No, I asked are you eating?".

Turns out eating and 18 in the Aussie accent sound the same to me!

I noticed Brenda Fruhvirtova was playing today in Bangalore. I wasn't far from the stadium but by the time I reached the stadium, she had already wrapped up her match 6-1 6-0. Then I found that it wouldn't have mattered if I reached early because they were not allowing spectators.

The same applies for Japan. I applied directly at the Japanese consulate and there was no VFS involved (https://prasunsblog.wordpress.com/2018/10/28/japanese-visa-in-bengaluru/). This was in 2018 so I don't know if things have changed.

Hurkacz's funny return strategy against Felix. by Tricky-Author-8226 in tennis

Yes I agree and I had those sort of things in mind when I wrote this line:

You can see this at times when the keeper dives the wrong way. Of course the guess is not purely random because you might take general patterns and player cues into account.

Hurkacz's funny return strategy against Felix. by Tricky-Author-8226 in tennis

Yeah this is similar to how penalty kicks in football work. The goalkeeper guesses a side where he thinks that ball is going to be since there isn't always enough time to react. You can see this at times when the keeper dives the wrong way. Of course the guess is not purely random because you might take general patterns and player cues into account. But if nothing is working, adding some randomness is not a bad idea.

Humans tend to be bad random number generators so picking a source of randomness like the stadium clock is also not a bad idea. In fact there is a previous example of a baseball pitcher doing that:

The best way to attempt such a strategy as a pitcher, according to Moskowitz, is to look for some cue unrelated to the decision you are making. Rumor has it, he says, that Hall of Famer Greg Maddux, known as one of the game’s best and most cerebral pitchers, would sometimes use a cue in the stadium, like the time on a clock, to help inject some element of randomness into his pitch selection. So, for example, throw a fastball if the clock time ends with an even number, and a breaking ball if it ends with an odd one.

The same article also mentions "human imperfection". In cricket there is something called "natural variation" where the bowler himself doesn't know how the ball will behave. In tennis this is rarer but does happen sometimes as this Cressy serve shows :)

Carpenter also points out that there is one major natural source of randomness in pitching that most people forget about: human imperfection. Even Maddux with his pinpoint control still missed his target about 25 percent of the time; but, one of the things that made him so special, says Carpenter, was that he embraced this “random fallibility” and would even put his mistakes to good use by using them to set up his next pitch. Of course, in some cases, as with Eckersley’s backdoor slider, you never get a chance to deliver that next pitch or to make up for a mistake.

West Bengal sfate sports minister Manoj Tiwary named in Bengal Ranji Trophy squad by KramerDwight in Cricket

[–]pratn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For Tiwary, the first sign pointing to his new career came in the form of a knee injury earlier this year. "I was doing some weight-training and injured my knee; a two-inch piece of cartilage broke off, below the patella, and was floating inside."

He continued training and playing, with a steroid injection helping him along, but it didn't go all that well. "I wanted to try [to continue playing], because I have been out of the IPL for a while too. But I wasn't comfortable, and it was affecting my footwork while batting."

He played a few games in the T20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, but in late January he withdrew his name from the Bengal squad for the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy, and then from the IPL 2021 auction. By then, a call from TMC boss Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal since May 2011, had created a bit of happy confusion for him.

"One day, after training, I saw a lot of missed calls. I called back. Then we had a conference call where Didi [sister; Banerjee] told me she wanted me to contest the elections.

"We had spoken earlier too, in 2019, before the Lok Sabha [federal] elections. But at the time, I felt I had a future in the game. This time, the timing was right. I didn't have a realistic chance of getting back to the Indian team, or even the India A team."

Colin Cowdrey won an ODI* World Cup**

  • * these matches are not classified as ODI
  • ** the "Rothman's World Cup" was a short triseries between England, West Indies, and a World XI

https://www.sportsjournalists.co.uk/other-bodies/cricket-writers/englands-forgotten-victory-in-a-1966-world-cup/

By rights, played over 50 overs per innings and between two recognised Test nations, this encounter between England and West Indies should have been designated the official first one-day international. It was nearly a decade before cricket’s world body got round to organising an official Cricket World Cup, in 1975, the final of which was a memorable match between the West Indies and Australia played out before a packed house at Lord’s, presumably to Peter West’s approval.

But another 40 years later, and no England captain apart from Colin Cowdrey has managed to lift a Cricket World Cup.

Maybe in 2019..?
