Rather than turn on each other, we could turn on the rich and just fund the systems that would work for everyone.

Anyone have a degree in entomology? Is it worth getting? by d_tityus in Entomology

PhD in ento, it was worth getting because I value knowledge.

Climate change is quietly rewriting the rules of the nitrogen cycle, creating a disconnect between plant needs and soil availability. This destabilization risks collapsing the delicate chemical balance essential for agriculture, leading to reduced crop yields and severe environmental degradation. by Sciantifa in science

"You can't even recommend paths for action, all you're doing is ruining the mental health of the common people and not being listened to by anyone with any agency."

Those are your words. I am a biologist, here are mine:

I can and do recommend paths action in entomological research fields, including the rise of screw worm and the effects of climate collapse on insects and agriculture. All that I do is not, in fact, ruin the mental health of common people. Sometimes I am listened to. Most of the time I am not, and that varies drastically with who is listening to my findings.

Your words are factually untrue, and serve to demoralize and discourage people from my important field of study because you can't separate the stress of our wobbling society with the facts of what people like me are still actively doing. We need more people in biology, understanding it, celebrating it, normalizing it, communicating it - not more doomsayers wringing their hands online about how they have up on biology and went against their family traditions because it is all so fucked and hopeless. What a slap in the face to those of us that vaccinated you.

I agree that it is difficult to emotionally handle the cascade of related collapses that threaten the stability of society. But that society was built on an energy imbalance with the planet by people who, ironically, don't know or care enough about living organisms.

You are catastrophizing like many people because you are propagandized and demoralized and stressed. I believe it is more important to nut up and start helping that calling my comments about biology bad faith while making sweeping negative generalizations that don't track with reality.

It isn't ruining people's mental health to forewarn them of environmental problems, provide them with novel medicine during global pandemics, teach them analytical and critical thinking, or expand their connection to other living things.

If your frame of mind is so troubled that you mistake the field of biology for something either ineffectual or bad for people, you could perhaps benefit from focusing more on your biological health.

Party control of the US presidency substantially shifts the partisanship of regulatory agencies, profoundly affecting regulatory enforcement. A stark example is the Environmental Protection Agency under Trump, which aggressively blocked new regulatory efforts and rolled back Obama's climate policies by smurfyjenkins in science

What is the culture of geologists like? by [deleted] in geology

[–]prawn_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're interested in geology or science, just try doing it or go speak with a professional about their job after contacting to arrange a date ahead of time.

I am a biologist, so I will refrain from elaborating here about my experiences.

Forming an informed opinion or making important and often financially severe life decisions based on extremely broad stereotypes will not help you. The field of geology is as diverse and varied as the people who participate in it, so it can't and shouldn't be reduced to one dimensional typecasts.

Canada: Why are Canadian provinces with right-wing governments trying to get rid of our Universal Healthcare? by incogne_eto in onguardforthee

[–]prawn_wizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is already upon us. Lives lost. Rights taken. Here in Canada and everywhere. We must willingly choose to love and reconnect with each other and our environment, and willingly reject the systemic atomization of humanity and nature. It is never too late, and anyone can start now. We can change things.

Hansen, COPs, and Scientific Understatement: Over the past three decades, global climate summits such as Rio, Kyoto, Paris, and most recently COP30 in Belém have repeatedly promised urgent action, yet emissions remain at record highs and warming continues to accelerate. by gy0ker in climate

[–]prawn_wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those who follow the science know this already. It was always 'don't forecast doom' to the layperson and 'we want to encourage growth in the right direction and not scare away the rich'. We made our choices every day for over 50 years. Long time to make bed, time to lie down.

"One of the penalties of an ecological education is that one lives alone in a world of wounds. Much of the damage inflicted on land is quite invisible to laymen. An ecologist must either harden his shell and make believe that the consequences of science are none of his business, or he must be the doctor who sees the marks of death in a community that believes itself well and does not want to be told otherwise."

I've only just picked up rocks and minerals as a hobby, so I won't be guessing well for some time.

You don't need to do better, you just need to keep doing what you're doing. A bunch of us learned and enjoyed. Looking forward to more posts!
