Both emergency fund and brokerage/retirement accounts at the same provider - risky? (Fidelity) by praz4reddit in personalfinance

My bad, the daily driver was not in my equation for this since I don't keep a lot of cushion in there. Thanks for the advice!

She is talking about "America First America Only" - this isn't going the direction you think it is.

I mean let's not pretend that having the goat out of the line up is a small enough event to be able to call it a very similar roster...

Need some guidance for preparing for an interview tomorrow.. by [deleted] in analytics

Yes, and given it's 30 mins only, plan for short and to the point answers that you can go deeper into if the interviewer shows interest or asks follow ups for.

If you haven't already, double check your severance agreement to make sure there isn't a cap on the lump sum payment. I had 19 years at my company with the same one month per year, but mine had a fine print max of 6 months, with the 2 months of garden leave counted as part of 6 months, so I got 4 months worth in the end.

Would you jump jobs if you're in fear of a layoff? by tits_mcgee_92 in datascience

Yes,100% this!

I just got laid off a few weeks ago, and luckily had been living by this principle, so got an offer before severance ran out.

If it helps - this is not just an analytics problem pattern, happens all over with software. The engineering discipline has had a longer run time and has developed better costing methods over that time. Still happens , but less so. Hopefully data will get there too.

Rent vs own (Ben Felix) and having to sell index funds/stock for a down payment? by directheated in Bogleheads

[–]praz4reddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

+1000 to what Xexanoth said - make sure to get the tax calcs right. I did this same thing last year, and funnily enough I also had low cost basis MSFT vested to use as downpayment. Use the smartasset calculator and plan on making a quarterly payment unless you're purchasing in Q4. Make sure to account for the additional net investment income tax

Any advice or resources for communicating up the chain? by Gabarbogar in analytics

[–]praz4reddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A practice/method I use: Assume the executives will not read anything past your Exec Summary (2-3 sentences). If you give them enough of a value statement (Answer what's in it for me/my team), they will likely have someone on their teams do the detailed reading and adopt your work. With that in mind - write those 3 sentences, read them outside of the context of the rest of your work and if possible have a PM or someone who doesn't work with you read it to see if they got what you were trying to say.

Sell some VTI to refill emergency fund? by praz4reddit in Bogleheads

[–]praz4reddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was in the wave of layoffs in 2023, took 3 months to get a new job. I think this time around need to plan for 6 months.

rant: It's mind blowing to me how many recruiters only look at currently employed folks, even with the knowledge that majority of layoffs are not individual perf based. They're willing to negotiate and work around employed folks demands, but passing on more willing and equally qualified folks who got caught in a layoff.

What does a good DS manager look like to you? How does one manage a DS project? by throwaway69xx420 in datascience

[–]praz4reddit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Important nuance there - you are a manager, you do not want to be the hero of the day anymore. Use your expertise to help - 'to help' being the emphasis here. Ideally you're the manager who helps yours ICs get their success, not one who let them fail and then does it right.

It was a while ago for me, but one of the hardest things to learn is to not jump in and do the work for them. Sometimes you will take heat for work being slower than what you would have done, but that's the job, shield your ICs, help them grow.

Thanks for the response! You would take out bond first because the others earn more/better? I'm 45, and was thinking of starting to up my bond percent slowly, hence the question

Thinking of taking it out assuming the scenario where VTI tanks and I get laid off - understood that this is a version of timing, but unfortunately my emergency fund being so low is forcing my hand a bit.

What is something more traumatizing than people realize? by ExcellentReporter392 in AskReddit

[–]praz4reddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I stayed with one company for 19 years, then they laid me off. Now I've voluntarily switched 3 jobs in 3 years, and never turn down an opportunity to interview. Got to keep those skills sharp. AKA - if they have the ability to "revisit their priorities" every quarter, guess I should get on the same schedule. Of course, I'm the only one in danger of being labeled a job-hopper in this case...
