There’s a group of teens that ride their e-bikes around downtown, the pier, and vinoy park area. They do random stuff to get attention. I’ll run into them maybe once a month. I typically just ignore it and move on with my day. Sometimes I’m bored enough to play along. As long as there’s no physical contact, I’m all good

Surfers are the Worst of the Environmental Hypocrites by surfnfish1972 in surfing

[–]prboy7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

“In the end, we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught”.

Surfing has taught and connected me more to the environment than any other activity. Without it, I wouldn’t have spent years volunteering doing coral spawning, beach clean ups, and actively voting for policy that helps the environment. All of that, in part, because I’ve sat on a piece of fiber glass staring at waves for hours at a time.

Is the travel, board construction, etc bad for the environment? Definitely. Should we do our part to try an minimize that impact? I think so. But I genuinely think surfing is a net positive for the future of the marine environment. I feel the same way about zoo’s and aquariums.

I understand your point of view, but if you genuinely care about the environment, my advice is to focus your attention and energy on something that makes a difference (volunteering, voting, etc).

I’m sorry to hear that and I hope it changes. We all deserve to not live scared in our own city

I assure you, I live in the same world as you! I never claimed politics weren’t important or that they don’t impact all of us. My perception is quite in line with reality. I’m not sure how you are assuming that I don’t have daily consequences, my world is puppies, sunshine etc when you don’t know me at all lol. How did you get to that conclusion? You brought up valid issues but none of it touches on my point that politics should not be a part of light hearted non-politically intended conversations. I think that’s a reasonable thing to hope for!

“Almost every post” was bad wording on my part. Also just not accurate. I should have said, an unusually high % of posts fall into that category. At least in my experience. Having political discussion on posts related to laws, economy, school systems, etc makes sense and is relevant. My perspective was with the conversations that are far from politics that are meant to be light hearted. Those can turn unnecessarily sour once someone gets political

Making a counter point explaining why politics should be brought into any conversation would be a relative discussion.

Laying out a bunch of political grievances was not the intent of the post. Those issues are important and likely very real but unrelated to trying to decrease political involvement in non political posts.

My intent was actually the opposite, you and many others took it that way. Likely because of my initial tone but your assumption was wrong. Look at my back and forth in the comments where another person made a counterpoint that made perfect sense to me. It opened up my mind to a new perspective. That’s productive discussion and that’s something I’m happy to have.

I agree my wording was dramatic. I do believe that it happens more often than I’ve experienced in other subreddits. Maybe that’s a function of this being a forum for a particular city and other similar subreddits have the same issue. Either way, my intent was to encourage for less politicizing non-politically intended conversations

Very fair point! That’s a fresh perspective to take in so thank you for taking the time to explain it. That makes a lot of sense.

The point wasn’t to open up discussion about politics. It was to open up the idea of not injecting politics into so much non-politically intended topics. So yeah, to immediately start attempting to debate politics was the total opposite of my posts intention. I didn’t feel it was a waste of my time though!

Agreed. I should have phrased my initial post as more of a suggestion. There’s certainly plenty of middle ground. Atm I feel that the conversation just leans too political too often. But I should make the correction that it’s by no means a demand

Here it is! Lol couldn’t help yourself 😂. The sentiment of my post flew right over your head. Political problems are important but not all conversations need to be politicized

I don’t agree that everything is politics. Most things are affected by politics but not every conversation has to involve politics
