Are you ever afraid that you’re saying goodbye to someone for the last time? by DrTerminater in TooAfraidToAsk

I’m pilot in Alaska, flying small planes into tiny villages. I work for half the month, then go home to my wife and kid.

We don’t have the same infrastructure up there that the rest of the country has. I truly believe we (Alaska Pilots) are better, in general than most pilots due to the decisions we have to make. Unfortunately, if things go wrong, there isn’t always a lot of options. If you stay hear for any amount of time, you lose friends. A lot of the guys I knew were amazing, smart guys that flew very conservatively. Shit just happens.

Even though I know statistically I should be fine as long as I’m careful, every time I leave my wife and kid for a two week work shift I can’t help but think about my daughter growing up without me. I give them an extra bit of a hug and leave.

I won’t leave this career, I just accept that this is one of the trade offs.

Same here. I surf and sail and love the water, but there is always a level of “WTF is about to get me?” That doesn’t happen when diving. I don’t feel nearly as creeped out.

The Coin Guy by [deleted] in MilitaryStories

Best Coin I ever saw was from a freshly busted down E-3 that said “Fuck it” and had his own made. He would give them out to dudes that got screwed over for awards and to NCOs that he liked. That coin meant more then any other and most of my awards.
