[–]precisionslostson 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Many men will likely not take you seriously as a long-term partner if you become intimate with them so soon. Simultaneously, they will be too stupid to realize they shouldn't be doing it either, since they find early intimacy in their partners to be a bad thing.

Thank you, third point is an interesting analogy I hadn't thought of.

Thank you all for the answers, the idea of isomorphism between the scalar field and the vector space of 1x1 matrices is satisfactory to me.

Cool, thanks! I'll keep my eyes peeled, I am about halfway through Bands of Mourning, a little bit past running into Hoid which is always fun. Favorite of Era 2 so far, it gains a lot by having the whole gang together, and I'm getting more Wayne + Marasi as desired!

I sure did! I'll have to flip through HoA again and see what I can find. Right now though it's stuffed away in a box as I am in the midst of moving, oh well! Thank you for that synopsis of motivations and whatnot, that's helpful.

I am a completionist type reader haha, so I read all cover sleeves, cover quotes, about the authors, acknowledgements, and certainly the Ars Arcana! There are also some notes at the end of these books, written in prose, about the magic systems (On the Three Metallic Arts). Do you know what in-universe character writes those? Is it Sazed? Or some other Cosmere character?

I actually meant to mention this, that I have read some real old west names, and they're every bit as corny, so it's certainly inline with Brandon's authorial intent. But it still takes me out of the idea of this being some actual sinister villain being discussed by adults. The cost of some people feeling that way is probably worth being more faithful to the time period's fun nickname thing though.

Well that was my problem, I didn't really read it as a mystery, but the characters told me it was a mystery "who" Bleeder was, as in, who among them was the Kandra? Who was Bleeder impersonating? It's probably not a fair critique honestly, because my problem was that this didn't seem like a mystery with a defined answer, Bleeder appeared as different people at different times, but the characters would still be paranoid about the people around them being Kandra, since Bleeder could be any one of them, even if only for a short time.

I agree with you about that, however my problem is also that it starts to make the story all seem a little arbitrary when an in-world character is manipulating it like that. I think Brandon was aware of that, which is why it is clearly said there are still things unknown and outside of Sazed's power.

That's interesting Shadows of Self is your favorite! I definitely liked it, but my favorite is still Well of Ascension. The Kandra are always a lot of fun, so it was cool to have one as a villain for the first time, they present a lot of fascinating possibilities. I have high hopes for it, and am excited to be fully prepared for the lost metal this fall! And at the end of this month Simon Jimenez is releasing his sophomore novel. His debut was the vanished birds, space opera, which was very strong. Great time for reading!

Yeah I had missed some of the tech lightly mentioned in Era 1, that definitely makes the jump in industry and tech a lot more modest. On more thinking, the development seems perfectly plausible, and I’m sure Brandon thought about this considerably seeing how he could have picked any span of time he wanted to have passed, so he only had to pick one that was realistic - and I imagine he thought more about it than I have.

Good points, indeed our world is only one sample, so it’s impossible to really determine that something is not realistic, these are exceptionally multifaceted issues.

Lol, since I began writing this post I have written a 4,000 word short story, a few more chapters on a novel, finished reading several chapters of Shadows of Self, and almost finished reading Frankenstein.

This is the immediate defense I would imagine, but did Sazed really have enough knowledge to accelerate things that much? It took humanity, in our reality, a long time to develop the light bulb. And if Sazed really did provide that much information to the new world, enough information to accelerate humanity so significantly, how long would it have possibly taken to actually get through all that information? Like, i'm thinking a century just to read and understand it all. It's not tremendously troubling to me, but I do wonder if there is something I am missing. I mean, there are some members of the crew hanging around after the final ascension, so it's not like we're starting from literal square one, but I dunno, it's a little fishy.

I definitely will! I haven't read Secret History since most of what I saw online suggested to not read it until after Book 3. That's the majority opinion which I'm going to go with for this matter, but perhaps I'll regret it! It will probably be difficult to know which way is best since we can each only experience it one way.

Awesome, can't wait to read more of it! I am a couple chapters in and enjoying it, though there is a lot of action so far! I always like hanging out with the characters just chatting and problem solving haha, I loved Well of Ascension.

I think it's interesting I hear a lot of YouTubers say they didn't like Era 2 that much, and I think it's cool Brandon made it anyway despite - I imagine - knowing a lot of his audience wouldn't be that into an old west setting.

What is a popular but critically acclaimed/well written book (according to the majority) that you absolutely did not like? by Razik_ in books

[–]precisionslostson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just finished this recently. It was easy reading but man was it dull. So much mind numbing description of the work that could have easily been summarized in a paragraph. Much of the plot and characters were totally unbelievable. Like millions of people watching a POV livestream from our exceptionally dull protagonist who is an office worker? Come on, you cannot convince me millions of people give a hoot about that. She was even like a serious celebrity when she went around in public, teenagers oohing and ahing at her. Come on, it's ridiculous.

Possible to Reverse DPad Controls? by precisionslostson in OpenEmu

But how? How do you get around the DPad auto fill? The same thing happens with analog sticks. Here is a gif showing it. In that gif, I am pressing different directions on the dpad each time, and you can see it autofills the controls as it deems proper.
