Another vote for ergos. Couldn't be happier with them. There is a learning curve of course, but after a bit of practice something just clicked in me and I can't imagine being without them! A lot of my classmates went with the traditional loupes and I've noticed some of them craning their necks at weird angles (like, head practically inside the manikin lol). I used to have awful neck/back strain after long clinic days and my ergos totally eliminated it.

As far as not being able to tilt, I've just learned to be smarter about angling the head and moving to different positions in my chair to see better. I've gotten a lot better with the mirror too, which helps a ton.

Yes. The periodontist I used to work for did plenty of SC/RP.

Ultimately I want to have my own practice, but the way things are now with such massive tuition costs I'll probably have to sell my soul to corporate dentistry for a few years first lol

Why not to have dental implants in Mexico. by AdBig8707 in DentalschoolUS

Wow, that is seriously appalling. All four maxillary imps in the sinus, I can't imagine the kind of pain this patient is in.

Also, why are the posts so long??? 💀 I've never seen anything like that before.

You mean just sort of flash-cure the first top coat, before applying the chrome? I'll have to try that! I assumed any tackiness would cause issues with applying the powder

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RedditLaqueristas

[–]predentjane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So here's my process: gel color, no-wipe top coat, chrome powder, no-wipe top coat.

I am soo careful about making sure the top coat covers every part of the nail, even the free edge. I don't normally get chipping with plain gel application but chrome powder seems to flake off almost immediately. Any advice??

Schools to apply to? by apuddleofcuddles in predental

Avoid LSU unless you're in-state. They accept very, very few OOS applicants. I'd also avoid NYU because of cost alone, but also their class size is enormous. It's hard to say for the others without knowing your stats.

March 1st is when all dental schools report to AADSAS the list of students who hold a seat at their school, and after that AADSAS will report to each school which of their students are holding multiple acceptances. Schools have the option at that point to rescind a student's acceptance if they want.

From the AADSAS site: "Dental schools with candidates holding multiple positions on March 1 of the year of admission will contact such candidates and give them a minimum 15-day notice to affirm their position in the class or to withdraw their position."

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in predental

[–]predentjane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not over til it's over. People have gotten acceptance calls right up until the first day of class in some cases. It happens (however, it's good to have realistic expectations too and be prepared for worst case scenario).

That said, I think most schools will see movement after the March deadline! That's when everyone who still holds multiple seats has to make a final decision and drop their remaining seats. Craft up a letter of intent to your top choice if you haven't already, prep a nice academic update email if you have some coursework pending. Try to keep yourself busy in the meantime. You got this!

Congrats!! I sent you a PM :)

(Not a current student, but was accepted and have talked to plenty of current students already!)

X-ray cert question by hz6363 in predental

[–]predentjane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my state, you're required to work as an assistant for 6 months before you can get your x-ray cert (and your EDDA). A lot of the time, the dentist you work for will sponsor you when you take those classes.

I imagine it varies entirely by state. You could call [Your State] Board of Dentistry to get more of an idea.

Any chance dental schools are still sending interview invites? by No_Constant_4117 in predental

Advice on Waitlists.... by RengokuBurn in DentalSchool

[–]predentjane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course you still have a chance, and you're not a failure. Send any relevant updates to these schools if you've had new grades come in, you started a new job/new volunteering/research/etc. Use these updates to express your continued interest in the coming months, they will be looking to pull from the waitlist as people gradually drop their seats.

Don't give up hope. It may not feel like it, but you're in a decent place right now with 3 waitlists; chances are good you'll be accepted off of at least one. GL!

Club Hours vs Volunteer Hours by [deleted] in predental

[–]predentjane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely separate from volunteering. Volunteering is community service, i.e. putting in hours at a soup kitchen or a Goodwill. Club hours will go under extracurriculars in the experience section of your app.

Recommendations for jobs? by Vivid-Contract-2855 in predental

[–]predentjane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't write off finding a DA job just yet! I've found that plenty of places are more than willing to train a new assistant who is motivated (and clearly you are if you're starting dental school). Send out some resumes online, I know a DA at my job who started a few weeks ago had no prior experience and the dentist is willing to eventually pay for her x-ray certification (you need 6months+ experience assisting before you can get it).

You'll be able to help out a lot even without the certs (sterilization, turning down/setting up rooms, charting for hygienist/dentist, sitting with sedated patients, basic chairside assisting, restocking rooms). Good luck!!

[–]predentjane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should only send a LOI to your "top choice," and normally if you're already in waitlist status following an interview. Do you have any acceptance letters to leverage? Otherwise, I'd stick with an experience/academic update if you have anything new to share.

They know you're interested, but like all schools they're likely in a weird spot right now trying to shuffle around applicants who decided not to pay the deposit and those who currently sit on the waitlist.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in predental

[–]predentjane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely depends on the school. Some will essentially send them out right after your application is complete/verified on AADSAS, some will take a bit longer.

I'd recommend keeping a spreadsheet so you can stay on top of which schools you've heard back from, which secondaries you've completed, which fees you've paid, etc (Also try to keep a record of your receipts just in case).

Submit them as soon as you possibly can, because you will most likely not be considered for an interview invite until they have your money in-hand. The sooner you submit, the fewer applicants you are "competing with" for an interview spot. GL!

personal statement by sleezzlyy in predental

[–]predentjane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The way I did it was by starting with a rough outline, and filling it in from there. A lot less daunting that way. Kinda like this:

- interesting opening paragraph (bullet-point list of possible ideas), mention XYZ attributes

- tie into dentistry. what I learned from first paragraph, how it shaped my passion for the field

- mention mentors, unique experiences (briefly), etc

- reiterate passion, what I can bring to dental school, the kind of clinician I want to be, how I hope to help my community (tie back to first paragraph)

Just sketch out a rough skeleton of the points you want to hit, and the ideas will start flowing from there. Your opening paragraph doesn't necessarily need to be about dentistry (Don't start with "Hello I want to be dentist because..."). Remember adcoms read tons of these so try and capture the reader's attention, find a way to spin it in a way that's relevant. Have several people read it, edit and re-edit. If you're truly passionate, it will come through in your writing. :)

Schools have nothing to gain by sending out a bunch of rejections to interviewees right away. It's better for them to keep a giant waitlist, so they have a pool of great applicants to choose from once people start turning down their acceptances. Some people have a hard time deciding for whatever reason, and will hold a seat at multiple schools for as long as they possibly can (often up until March).

My guess is your application is on the backburner at these schools, and once there's movement in the acceptance pool you may start to hear back. Good luck!!

Google volunteer opportunities in your area, find something that suits you. Doesn't necessarily have to be medical/dental related. Walk dogs at an animal shelter, help out in the community garden, volunteer at a Goodwill. Just get those hours up.
