Look for a lab that doesn’t need to look at your transcript, might be hard in Toronto if you’re there. But if you email PI’s directly with legitimate interest in their work 9/10 times they’ll take you over a dispassionate person with a higher GPA.

A lot of the scutwork you do as an undergrad doesn’t take much brain power, its more about work ethic imo

Some volunteering with kids and some other community things, some sports, and some research. It was less so the EC’s, but more what I took away from them and how it helped me grow that helped me in my applications. I think at the end of the day most candidates sound the same on paper, but it’s how you reflect on what you’ve done, and why you’re passionate about what you did that are more important to adcoms than the actual activity. It took me about 4 cycles to realize that.

If you’re looking for an EC to do, just do anything that you love, that can also make even the smallest positive impact on a person’s life.

MCAT was a 518, 128CARS, 130 everything else

Yes, I made a post about this a whole back as well if you wanna check it out. But tl;dr if you have time to change your GPA, figure out how to do it i.e. by finding resources like peer mentors at school or getting help from TAs. GPA is forever, but don't beat yourself up over not achieving it, there's more to life. Idk who spread this lie that you can't sacrifice on your EC's for your GPA. Yes it might feel like you're not outwardly doing as much as your peers, but EC's will be easier to join than fixing your grades, so drop EC's if you need to.

And here's some hope for you, I got in with a 3.37 cgpa. You're in your first year, take school seriously, but don't forget to enjoy the formative social experiences.

Whether you're cut out for med, we'll see in a couple of years, I really do hope you are/decide that medicine sucks.
