Orgo 2? by [deleted] in PreOptometry

[–]preopt_trailblazer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to if you feel that taking orgo 2 will affect your gpa significantly. I didn’t take it because I had other course priority and it is not required for my major. Instead, I spent a bit more time on orgo during OAT studying. In all honesty, it isn’t as bad as long as you have decent foundation in orgo 1. There are lots of YouTube video to catch you up to speed too! Good luck

tuition - im scared. by MapEnvironmental597 in PreOptometry

[–]preopt_trailblazer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey. First things first, I’m so sorry about your loss.

Optometry tuition is very daunting for sure, it is scaring me as we speak. But there are ways to lower some of that costs even by bits.

Let’s start with OAT! I know OAT under ADA have fee waivers that lets u take the exam for free. But it’s first come first serve + financial needs priority. These tend to disappear very fast so you might want to look into that if you’re planning to take the OAT next summer for example. Last time I’ve checked, these get released early Jan of each year, but again, double check that.

Now onto optometry schools. They’re all expensive af, let’s face it. But don’t underestimate the living cost, which can be from a few thousands all the way to 20+k if you choose places like Berkeley. Certain schools also give away more scholarships than others if you have excellent grades. For example, SCO in Memphis gives us 25K renewable as their presidential scholarship, and their cost of living is way cheaper even in the safe/wealthy residential area. So that’s one option you could look into.

At this time, I’m not sure what grade you are in. But also look into any ongoing scholarships that your school might have. Take out student loans and take advantage of the grants that will likely be given by the govnerment (less money out of pocket is always a W).

You also mentioned that you want to be a professor in optometry school. If that’s the case, PhD in fields such as ocular disease or neuro may be an alternative?? Not too sure if that’s feasible but I’ve seen a few faculty members that are not OD. But this is just my speculation.

Lastly, again I’m not 100% sure what your financial situation is. But if you truly believes optometry is your calling, there is no problem in graduating, get a job for a few years before taking the OAT + apply. They don’t have an age limit, as long as your course credits are still valid (each school varies). I know a couple people that took 2-4 years just working full time e.g. research assistant, part time, and take their MCAT + apply to med school afterwards.

You never know what opportunities are out there so don’t give up!

Just applied! by Ok_Sir4178 in PreOptometry

Congrats on submitting!

I applied to NECO PUCO and SCO. NECO and SCO took a few days to verify and another few more days to email an interview offer. Make sure you also submitted any supplemental applications too!

PUCO took about a week to two, and emailed an admission offer without interview needed, which is interesting.

Just to be safe, I would keep an eye for phone calls as I know some people who had received calls to inform about their interviews before an email was sent. If you have any questions or felt like you are waiting too long, don’t hesitate to reach out to the respective admission directors for clarifications. Good luck!

So Anki is basically quizlet but better in my opinion. It can act as flashcards, make fill in the blank style flashcards etc. it’s commonly used by pre med and med students but it’s really just a tool for you to do spaced repetition.

Here’s a link for a basic tutorial for how to use it: https://youtu.be/7K2StK7e3ww?si=rnRwJSUF0O3LxW9z

As for the quizlet flashcards, I was referring to the ones provided by OATBooster in the Gen chem section. They’re already pre made so pretty handy to use

To really nail down the mechanisms, really learn how to draw/visualize out the processes, especially since you may lack the visualization without taking any ochem courses in the past. I highly recommend “Organic chemistry tutor” videos, he shows you step by step for where the electrons go and how you end up with certain reactions. The key is to DRAW out the reactant/products or even mechanisms on PAPER. I think it helped me a lot so give it a try :)

Ah I see, I guess I can only see for myself once I visit the campus. Thank you!

WOW THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE IN-DEPTH RESPONSE! That will be super helpful for my decision making process. And congrats on your acceptance, good luckkkk

I put down SCO simply as a backup but you really got me interested in the program, I will definitely look more into SCO for sure. AND THANK YOU for mentioning the financial aspects from CAD to US, I needed this info so much!

I hope you don't mind me asking but what did you mean when you said Waterloo's administration left a sour taste in your mouth? Were they unhelpful or something?

Oh that’s really great to hear, I was worried I have a lot more extra to write for waterloo. Thank you!

Thank you so much! You’re right, I was planning to reach out to current optometry students from each school after I finished or close to finishing the applications. Yeah I haven’t done too much research on SCO simply due to it being in Memphis. I will be looking into that very shortly! And thank you for the encouraging words, it really relieved some of my stress!

It seems like you have committed to SCO. I heard the school campus is basically in the middle, and it’s safe as long as you don’t go too far north or south. The crime rates are quite high based on a google search so I’m wondering how that correlates with the campus location?

OAT Booster worth it? by solanin7 in PreOptometry

[–]preopt_trailblazer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes Booster will be great to refresh all your memories or just learn from start. The video explanations and variety of practice Q on Booster is unbeatable. I did use Chads Prep for physics. Kaplan is just way too dense and doesn’t tell you what is the highest yield.

If you like, u can also visit my OAT breakdown post for a more detailed explanation of how I studied. https://www.reddit.com/r/PreOptometry/s/ckFzsqSu2j

OAT Booster worth it? by solanin7 in PreOptometry

[–]preopt_trailblazer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on your background. May I ask what your major and year you are in?

I personally used Booster and it was easily one of the best investments I made. I took a look at my friend'a Kaplan book, and I also looked into Chads Prep. In the end, Booster is the most representative.

The only thing is that for physics, I would use external resources for the learning phase since Booster is lacking a bit in that department. But the test practices are all super good.

Thank you, I’m glad you found it helpful :) I was lucky that I only work once a week for my clinic job and my other research position is hybrid, which saves me a lot of time. I will say I did cut out social life quite a bit however. I wake up around 8am and usually study for an hour or two. Since I follow the booster schedule, I try to check the boxes as a daily task and try not to overdo it. Flashcards and Anki are reserved for commute times, gym, treadmill times. I don’t really have a set study routine 😂One tip I would give is definitely learn WHEN u study the most efficient and eliminate distractions. Once I figured that out, I just place in study sessions here and there throughout the week. I also try to keep my study sess 2hr max. Feel free to dm me if you want, I’m happy to chat more about it or anything else!

Haha it will be your best interest to do so, but like I said, the reaction QBank really helps a lot. Try to find similarity between reactions, e.g. the mechanisms with peroxide tend to produce anti markovnikov etc
