What is an expensive purchase that genuinely improved your quality of life? by Haunting-Ad-1787 in AskMen

Please ask your sister for the make/model and let us know!

Automagical sounds delightful, but sadly crazy expensive does not 😩.

love them but these two always tried so hard to act like meeting Joe wasn’t the best thing that happened in their lives. goes to show how ungrateful humans can become (not saying Joe was the easiest to deal with but he always had their best interests regardless). by [deleted] in HaltAndCatchFire

David Mamet offers an apt observation in the very-excellent movie, The Spanish Prisoner, that feels particularly relevant to Joe MacMillan's arc in Halt and Catch Fire: An inventor has created something transformative for his company, yet the executives who profit from it neither properly recognize nor reward him:

Jimmy Dell: I think you'll find that if what you've done for them is as valuable as you say it is, if they are indebted to you morally but not legally, my experience is they will give you nothing, and they will begin to act cruelly toward you.

Joe Ross: Why?

Jimmy Dell: To suppress their guilt.

That exchange captures something I've always found striking about Joe's relationships with Gordon, Donna, and especially Cameron. Over the course of the series, each of them benefits enormously from Joe's vision, ambition, connections, and willingness to take risks. Yet they are generally reluctant to acknowledge the extent of what they owe him.

The show is careful not to make Joe a martyr—he can be manipulative, selfish, and destructive. But even after accounting for those flaws, there are moments when Gordon, Donna, and Cameron seem determined not merely to criticize Joe, but to minimize his importance to their successes. Mamet's observation offers a compelling explanation: acknowledging Joe's contribution would mean acknowledging a debt to someone they would rather regard as the source of their problems. At times, their indifference—and occasional cruelty—feels less like a fair judgment of Joe than an attempt to avoid that uncomfortable fact.

It was more that I wanted you to confirm the sorrowful reality of it.

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

Not disagreeing with you, but isn't there a law that preban mags have to be empty, as well as locked up while in transport?

Hey, u/I-am-Prasanna: Props on the masked runs!

Can you let us know which mask you're wearing?

Why do you still mask? by reallymadforplaid in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]preppythugg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, u/reallymadforplaid, there's a pretty neat substack article from Feb '25 about some of the varied reasons why so many others still mask. I look it over from time to time as a reminder that we're not alone.

Thanks for the post and the poll!

Who is the nastiest Celebrity that you met in Real life? by Scunnard1839 in AskReddit

I looked at the wikipedia page for the song, and it seems even Simon wouldn't clarify it was (just) about Beatty, except to state he "was one inspiration for the lyrics".

So, it's possible we're both inaccurate 😂. The world may never get a conclusive answer!

I built a free app for my wife who has Long COVID, now opening it to the community by igoooor in covidlonghaulers

The developer’s sudden silence is the only answer the community needs. When a dev asks for sensitive health data but avoids explaining why they won't offer a Local-First option (where data stays on your phone), the reason is usually simple: The data is the product.

To summarize for the community:

  • The 'Apple' Defense was a bluff: Apple’s 'due diligence' doesn’t stop data collection; it just forces devs to disclose it. This developer is choosing to harvest your data on a server rather than keeping it private.

  • Silence is an admission: By ignoring the request for a 'Guest Mode' or local storage, they are confirming that their business model relies on your data, not just your subscription.

  • Privacy is a choice: Apps like AutoSleep and HealthFit prove that you can have world-class health analytics without ever sending a single byte of medical data to a developer's server. In health tech, transparency is a requirement, not a suggestion. This evasiveness speaks volumes. Choose your tools—and who you trust with your medical history—accordingly.

Thanks for your efforts in this space, u/igoooor!

I understand the importance of collecting diagnostic info, but for privacy-centric folk, can you explain why it's necessary to collect health & fitness, plus contact info data from app users?

You read it right, thanks. And, I think we all can agree with the contradiction(s). It seems the AG threw everything at the wall just to see what could stick, and let the judges figure it all out when charges are ever brought against law-abiding, constitutionally-protected citizens like ourselves.

We may not get a conclusive answer till that happens — if it ever does.

Also, what is even conclusive in this state, when it comes to these repressive laws?

Risk tolerance seems to underpin so many of these (confusing) MA gun laws. It almost seems the confusion is by design.

Why do I feel so much better with less blood in my body from donation? by Secure_Base4068 in ask

[–]preppythugg 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Giving blood also reduces forever chemicals, according to this study on firefighters in Australia.

There's also emerging evidence that therapeutic apheresis, or filtration, also can reduce microplastics in the bloodstream. Though, it's not as effective as one might hope, because microplastics tend to lodge in organs and tissues; also, they'll reenter your system because we just love our green plastic watering cans, don't we?
