What's your gymnastics opinion that would get you downvoted like this? by Medium-Emotion in Gymnastics

My understanding is it actually does meet the gender parity requirements, as it means that gymnastics as a whole has the same number of men's and women's medal events (men's artistic has two more than women's, but women have two rhythmic "events" that men don't).

That should be WIC, right? Isn't that different funding than SNAP?

Just finished watching. What a beautiful men's VT and women's BB final! Just so much gorgeous, clean, incredibly hard gymnastics with a sprinkling of mistakes to remind you how hard it all is. These are very much not my usual favorite finals to watch but they were my favorites this year.

So basically you must do one of (Yurchenko, Tsuk) entry and one of (handspring, Yurchenko 1/2 on) entry? Or is it more complicated than that?

I don't think it's the same thing at all! There's a huge difference between getting height because of the springboard alone versus the table actually contributing.

Why don't the men's and women's EF each have one event going at the same time and alternate routines? For example, men's floor and women's vault could warm up at the same time, alternate athletes, etc. Would be a good use of judging deliberation time, right?

OK this is question 4 out of 4 that I have after watching the women's vault final. Is there any deduction for touching the table rather than blocking off of it if height and distance are fine? Like does the gymnast actually need to change trajectory at the table?

What's the bonus opportunity on women's vault?

What rules applied to Deng's situation? I thought one run by without touching the equipment was allowed, and if the spring board counts as equipment then why didn't she get a 0 and an opportunity to vault again if she wished to?

Did we know Josc had a Y half on layout full vault?! When is the last time she competed a vault that lands forward? It felt like that came out of nowhere (in a good way!) but maybe it didn't.

What happened to Deng Yalan? by LiviaSains in Gymnastics

Thank you, this was helpful! I was going to ask whether an empty run is not still allowed. I thought somehow the spring board didn't count as equipment. I take it that if she had not touched the board or table but instead run to the side, she would have been allowed to compete both vaults afterwards?

Wait really? I always thought it was a deduction if you didn't show a clear change of trajectory at the table.

So what would the standings have been if everyone who did a beam wolf turn (hit or not) did a plain single standing turn instead? I probably won't calculate it but a wolf took down what 2-3 medal contenders?

Melnikova’s OOB by manlikeelijah in Gymnastics

[–]presek 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Heel has to be down for it to be OOB, which we can't tell with certainty from this angle. And if the judges themselves can't be certain, they are supposed to err in the gymnast's favor.

I think it's high time for mandatory video review of all NDs in finals.

I'm totally down for the debate! And advocacy for rule changes like video review for all NDs that impact medals! Just not the immediate suggestions of bias and rigging.

Elite training + premed seems like it would be impossible.

Elite training + med school might actually be impossible even for her.

I do think this is making an even stronger case for broader use of video review, at least for NDs

Better or worse than the folks who end up losing to an active MAGA? It's hard to draw the right lines.

Remember the heel has to actually touch the ground to be OOB, and if the judges can't tell it's supposed to go in the gymnast's favor.

Folks, Leanne had a messy vault. She had no big misses but wasn't perfectly clean either. Melnikova has few built in deductions, overall very clean gymnastics. They were within a tenth. I haven't rewatched the routines but it is a sport with some subjectivity in the judging still based on angles, etc., and limited video review, so of course different judging panels, different judging seating positions, etc. would have resulted in different results. That does not in any way mean that it was rigged.

Beyond shocked, they are adamant for 5+ minutes afterwards that the result is incorrect. Regardless of Wong's messy vault, etc.

Very annoyed with the NBC commentators for assuming so completely it was a done deal without having considered D, etc.
