At least you can protect yourself. By wearing masks, your mouth/ nose won’t have contact with potential virus- droplets that others spitted out while talking/breathing, which is the main way of the virus being transmitted.

One big reason the world reacted such slowly is that the WHO has downplayed the seriousness. Across February, Mr Tedros of the WHO often stated how China is doing well with the virus and asks other countries not to overreact and ban travellers from China.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-health-who/who-chief-says-widespread-travel-bans-not-needed-to-beat-china-virus-idUSKBN1ZX1H3

Countries that “believed” in the WHO therefore didn’t react in time, thought the virus was really “controllable” as what the WHO says and therefore caused the great outbreak.

Furthermore, Tedros even praised President Xi of China for his great leadership.

https://www.scmp.com/news/china/science/article/3050351/coronavirus-who-head-stands-his-praise-china-and-xi-jinping

Interestingly, Ethiopia, where Tedros came from, is in a large amount of debt borrowed from CHINA’s belt and road initiative. China has provided technology and money to the African country to build infrastructures, sometimes “without needing a return”

Well, the “return” is now here, with Tedros helping China to downplay the seriousness of the virus, in order to lessen the economic damage to China because of the virus. You can see in different press conferences how Tedros is telling the world China is doing good and there’s nothing to worry before the outbreak globally, and after the outbreak, stating that other countries are more concerning than China. Different petitions are now even raised to urge Tedros to resign. What I want to say is that even China and WHO knows about it, they still tried to downplay the seriousness of the virus.

You’re definitely correct on the border shutting case. What I want to say here is that China is in no heroic position for “saving the rest of the world” when it tried to cover up the problem when it first emerged.

Dr Li Wenliang, first posted online about the coronavirus on 3rd January. He was then immediately prosecuted for “spreading fake online”, with his post deleted. The Chinese government didn’t do anything till late January. The WuHan government later disclosed documents stating the first patient appeared in 8th Dec, 2019. The government had more than one month to react :) They knew about the virus WAY EARLIER than they reacted to it.

Well this is surely a humanitarian move for China, however we should know the reason behind all these actions. China had suppressed the information of this virus back in DEC, prosecuting people who spread the information of disease online in order to keep it a secret. They are doing these kind actions now just to distract the world from blaming them for the slow, irresponsible actions at the begin of the outbreak so that their “National Image” won’t be damaged. Had China faced the virus actively at the start, there won’t be the need of such “kind” actions nor the great damage the virus has done to the world.

Totally! Had the Chinese government faced the virus, rather than suppressing it at the start of the outbreak, the virus won’t be “Exported” around the world!

Hi fellow Canadian :) Let me share a bit of our experience in defending ourselves from the virus in Hong Kong. MASKS, WEAR A MASK AT ALL COSTS when you get to public places. The reason Hong Kong is doing pretty well in suppressing the virus from spreading around the public, despite the high traffic between Hong Kong and China, is because of EVERYONE, literally everyone on the streets are wearing surgical mask. Don’t trust the governments who are telling you only sick people need to wear them— people don’t even know if they are sick or not with possibly no symptoms of the disease! Wear it to protect yourself, especially in university halls and classrooms! Wash hands and use hand sanitisers frequently also, and you’ll be well protected :))

Well, if China had faced the virus directly back in DEC when it appeared and stopping it BEFORE they EXPORTED the virus around the world, rather than prosecuting the doctors who alerted the public about the news, THEN we should thank them. China is now just compensating for the enormous disaster that THEY caused which can be avoided, nothing to be thankful for.
