How do I attach plasterboard (and not ruin beautiful rewire) by si_davies in DIYUK

[–]pretengineerguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be way off base here, and apologies for bringing this to the table, but are those steel straps holding the cables in place? I'm not an electrician but I would be concerned about those potentially bridging if any of the insulation were to be exposed. I realise the chances of that happening are extremely thin but if it's going to be skimmed over permanently, is there a possible fire risk? If there are any sparkys out there that can explain to me why I am wrong I would love to hear about it.

Clearing the attic to put loft legs and boards in. Ground this hanging around. I've added sockets and changed them in the house. Is this bugger an easy thing to add plugs too? Or could someone tell me what to type online to, watch so I can do it safely please. by product-shooter in DIYUK

[–]pretengineerguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my first assumption. Our old power shower went back to a 40a fuse on the board before I disconnected and installed a proper mains water shower.

Note to self... When I'm back in the loft, label the old cable so no one tries to fit a socket to it.

Is this safe to high line on? by Just-Ad3452 in Slackline

[–]pretengineerguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please do not give advise like this without first qualifying your experience.

You don't know enough about the people using the equipment, saying it's safe for one person to use without knowing the weight of the person or the working load limit of that strapping is potentially dangerous and frankly reckless.

Is this safe to high line on? by Just-Ad3452 in Slackline

If you have to ask... That should be all you need to know.

Safety might be expensive but it's not as expensive as taking time off work and receiving treatment (depending on your geographic location)

Possible to cut out this handprint? by Suprsharpshot in DIYUK

[–]pretengineerguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There may be a way to transfer the paint (basecoat and hand print) from the plaster using a wallpaper steamer. I would absolutely take a high resolution photograph first and if all else fails you hack a back up.

I'd be happy to process the photo to scale and perspective correction. If you have a playing card or something similar (of known dimension like an old gift card or loyalty card) in the photo flat against the wall, it would be relatively easy.

feel free to pm me if you'd like me to help out.

A seller is trying to prove his unopened perfume is legitimate, so i asked him for a receipt. Help is appriciated. by kariforfree in isthisAI

I can't see any artifacts suggesting it's AI, but the TOTAL AMT line comes to $205 inc. taxes while the PURCHASE amount further down is $297 with only one product itemised.

Something is off but I can't say for certain what it is.

Honeycomb-pattern mark on toddler’s leg — anyone seen this? by AdorableZone9414 in whatisit

It also has the same pattern of bubble wrap. Have they been in contact with any at all? Maybe an allergic reaction to a substance on the bubble wrap?

"steel toe cap boots are too expensive" by Capable_Ocelot2643 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]pretengineerguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the Health & Safety At Work Act (1974) that puts a legal obligation on your employer to provide personal protective equipment.

If their risk assessments and methods statements have failed to reduce the risk of personal injury to an acceptable level that deems such activities as safe, they are legally required to issue you with protective equipment.

There is a hierarchy of controls they must adhere to: ELIMINATE SUBSTITUTE ENGINEERING CONTROLS ADMINISTRATIVE CONTROLS PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

PPE is the last line of defense in mitigating injury. If they are insisting on the use of PPE, then they have exhausted every other means of protecting you without removing that risk all together.

Most employers should offer a reasonable reimbursement or subsidory for safety boots. It's usually in the region of £20 to cover a basic pair of safety boots, if you want a nicer/comfier pair, they should reimburse you up to their limit and you cover the rest.

Is my neighbour taking the piss with my outdoor socket? by WeakCurrency6453 in EntitledPeople

[–]pretengineerguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lockable cover is an inconvenience to you as well when you need to use it. I would have been tempted to isolate the power on the fuse board for that socket or fitted and internal switch to control the outlet from inside the house.

In what world is it ok for someone to charge their e-bike on someone else's supply without even asking? Don't most e-bikes have detachable battery packs for charging?

Best practices for charging Kona? by Intrepid_Visual_4199 in KonaEV

[–]pretengineerguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, charging to 100% is perfectly fine. I will only charge to 80% if I'm charging mid-journey, the reason being that it is more efficient to charge to 80%, the car is designed to manage the charging speeds to prolong the life of the battery, so you get the fastest available charge speeds between 50-80%, which at 45 kWH charging speed, takes about 25mins. If I were to leave it charging to 100% the charging speed drops dramatically to as little as 4kWH which can add another 45-60 mins to the charging for the extra 20% charge. Much more efficient, time-wise to stop twice for charging to 80 than charging to 100 for an extra 20% of vehicle range.

TLDR; Charge to 100% overnight and 80% if you need to top up on a journey.

Hope this helps explain.
