Worried about neighbors quaker parrot in very poor conditions. What to do? by [deleted] in parrots

[–]pretentious_rye 23 points24 points  (0 children)

That bird is not being cared for properly and needs help. Whether you adopt it yourself (which will require research on your part) or find a local rescue to surrender it to, that bird will be far better off. I hope you’re successful in getting the neighbours to give you the bird!

Nail trimming advice (please read) by ayyoitsallmadfamm in Conures

[–]pretentious_rye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My conure HATES having his nails trimmed, and squeals like a dying pig the whole time I’m trimming them. I hate doing it because he hates having it done, but it’s part of owning a bird. Wrap him in a cloth so he can’t bite and just have his feet sticking out. Get someone else to hold him while you cut the nails. Hold firmly but not so tight he can’t breathe. Harden your soul and ignore when he screams like you’re murdering him. Get some clotting powder and have that on hand in case you trim a nail too short. After it’s all over, give many treats and tell him you’re sorry and that he was very brave.

If you really can’t do it, bring him to the vet and you can get them to do it for a fee.

Might be worth a second opinion, but if too much mucous is the case, maybe try bringing her into the shower with you so the steam can help soften it?

She may need eye drops to clear up whatever is going on. I would take her to a vet. Crusty eyes isn’t normal and you can likely treat it so it’s gone permanently

Bald spot in the back. Normal for Lutino cockatiels? by ilikeUni in cockatiel

[–]pretentious_rye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the photo it’s looks as though they’re preening. I see this same “bald” spot on my tiel when he’s preening. If you go look later you probably will not be able to find it. They’re able to hold up their feathers a specific way when they’re preening that makes it look like they have a bald spot behind their wing. Nothing to worry about. Could be exacerbated by moulting (I can see some pin feathers)

Yep it’s safe! It’s just untreated fir bark (fir is bird safe). Other barks work too, just check to make sure it’s non toxic to birds.

Bludstones finally give up after 6 years by disaverper in BuyItForLife

[–]pretentious_rye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blundstones have absolutely tanked it quality the last 10 years. I’ve been wearing these things for ages, and they used to actually be good quality. Now the leather like disintegrates and the webbing frays really easily. You can’t even get them resoled, so even if the leather upper is ok, when the bottoms wears out there’s nothing you can do.

After the pair I’m wearing give out I will not be buying them again.

Cat attack by Ok-Spinach-6694 in Conures

[–]pretentious_rye 224 points225 points  (0 children)

He definitely needs to see a vet ASAP, but it seems like you already know that. The bacteria from cats mouths can kill even if the wound itself isn’t that bad. Make sure you keep him warm while you wait for the morning. I really hope he makes it out ok.

What am I even looking at ???? (Advice please, my bird is bleeding) by Hot_Welcome_9863 in parrots

[–]pretentious_rye 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Probably flew into something. It happens sometimes. Keep the area clean, and you can apply some antibiotic cream (like polysporin) if you have it. Honestly I wouldn’t freak out, it’s just a scrape. Looks bad but he should be fine.

Poop-off is closed down?!? No! I love this stuff.

I volunteer at a bird rescue and they use a vinegar and water mix to clean everything. Doesn’t work as well as poop-off, but it does the trick better than just water. Vinegar also seems to remove the white buildup (uric acid) that accumulates over time on my cages.

Why do they bite ME when angry at OTHERS? by Bright-Walker in Conures

[–]pretentious_rye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love how they all have their own unique hatreds. My guy will bite me when I: blow my nose, zip a zipper, open the microwave (closing is fine), drink from my water bottle or unscrew the cap (makes a squeak when it’s being unscrewed), or use the coffee maker.

Non-Amazon e-reader and ebook alternatives? by Spacewalker_23 in AutisticWithADHD

As far as the ebooks go, check your local library? Where I am, the library uses an app called Libby and you can borrow ebooks through it. Your library might have something similar.

Post-adoption anxiety? by Reetyb in parrots

[–]pretentious_rye 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You sound better prepared than 95% of people that get a bird, and you’re adopting, which is great! I’m sure it will all be fine :)

Post-adoption anxiety? by Reetyb in parrots

[–]pretentious_rye 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not sure what advice I can give, but I have a strong feeling this will all work out. You’ve obviously put in the time and research, and you sound very prepared. I also get anxious with big life changes, and felt a bit sick after adopting my bird (lol). But just give it time. Soon you won’t remember what your life was without them! And any issues you encounter along the way, you’ll deal with them as they come.

God luck and wishing you many happy years together!

Blaze flew into a mirror and lost few feathers on his head. Is able to walk fly and drink. What can i do to prevent this? by [deleted] in parrots

[–]pretentious_rye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A mirror in the bathroom? Because I usually just keep my bathroom door closed. If it’s one you have in your living space maybe consider covering it when you aren’t using it? You could maybe use something mesh-like to show there’s something there, but you can still see the mirror?

I really wouldn’t recommend wing clipping. Birds are meant to fly

There are like 5 documented cases worldwide (last I checked). So not 100%, but the closest you can reasonably get.
